This review comes with a disclosure beyond the usual one: Joensuu is not a random dot on the map for us. Joona lived here during his army service and a couple of university years — so walking back into the city centre, past the river and the familiar corners, was less “checking out a destination” and more “visiting an old friend”.

Which makes what we are about to say mean more, not less: Lietsu Boutique Aparthotel is the warmest, most character-filled place we have ever stayed in Joensuu, and one of the most likeable hotels we have found anywhere in Finland. It is Karelian to its bones — in the food, the rooms, the sauna, the welcome — and it made a former local see his old city with new eyes.

Coming back to Joensuu — and why the city deserves your stop

Joensuu is the capital of North Karelia, on the eastern edge of Finland — a compact, walkable university city where the Pielisjoki river runs right through the centre. Most foreign visitors barrel past it on the way to somewhere else, which is their loss: this is one of the friendliest, most authentically Finnish city-break candidates in the country, and it wears its Karelian identity proudly.

Lietsu sits in the perfect spot to test that claim: right in the city centre, close to the river view, with the city’s cafés, shops and evening strolls all within a few minutes on foot. There is guest parking too — genuinely convenient if you arrive by car, as most Finland road-trippers do. Peaceful, central, easy: the location does exactly what a city-break location should.

Rooms with stories: our night in ‘Ferezi’

Here is what separates Lietsu from every chain hotel in the country: each room has its own theme and its own story, drawn from Karelian culture. Ours was the Ferezi room — named after the traditional Karelian dress — and the theme is not a plaque on the door; it runs through the design of the room itself. Checking in felt less like getting a key card and more like being handed a chapter of local history to sleep in.

Beyond the personality, the practical bones are excellent: the room was well equipped, clean and cosy, and the beds did their job after a long travel day. Waiting for us was a welcome we did not expect: a complimentary local drink — mustaherukanlehtijuoma, a traditional Finnish drink made from blackcurrant leaves — plus a goody bag with shampoo and other essentials. There is also a fridge of drinks and snacks available for an extra fee if you arrive late and hungry.

Check-in itself was effortless — the kind of smooth that you only notice because you have experienced the opposite elsewhere.

Kitchens, washing machines and the aparthotel logic

The “aparthotel” part of the name is not decoration. Rooms come with small, fully equipped kitchens — properly equipped, with everything you need to actually cook, not just a sad kettle and two cups. For us, this transformed the stay: breakfast supplies from the local supermarket, a real dinner option after a day out, and the general self-sufficiency that makes travel cheaper and calmer.

Staying longer? Some rooms include a washing machine — and if you have ever hit day ten of a trip with a bag of laundry and no options, you know that this single feature can decide a booking. It is the classic aparthotel equation: hotel service and comfort, apartment independence. Lietsu nails both sides.

We measure Finnish hotel breakfasts sternly, and Lietsu’s genuinely impressed us: really good quality for the price, built on high-quality ingredients with a clear local, Karelian touch. This is the region that gave Finland the Karelian pie, after all — the local food culture is a feature here, not a footnote, and the breakfast table shows it.

That local thread runs through everything: the food, the room themes, the sauna, the drink at arrival. Plenty of hotels bolt on a “local experience”; Lietsu simply is local, and the difference is easy to feel. The staff complete the picture — friendly, helpful, caring, switching between Finnish and English effortlessly, and creating that feels-like-home atmosphere that boutique hotels chase and rarely catch.

A sauna with a river view — and the rest of the practical picture

Being Finnish (and honorary-Finnish), we headed straight for the hotel sauna — and found one with a river view. A proper löyly with the Pielisjoki scenery outside is exactly the kind of detail that turns a good hotel into a memorable one, and it fits Joensuu perfectly: this is a river city, and Lietsu makes sure you feel it.

The rest of the practical checklist, quickly: the location is central and peaceful at once, the river view is close by, guest parking is available and convenient, and everything in the hotel was clean and cosy throughout our stay. Convenience and great food were our biggest overall impressions — and we left saying, out loud, that we would love to come back. We rarely say that on the record. We are saying it now.

Homecomings are risky: the city you remember never quite matches the city you find. Lietsu solved that problem by giving us a version of Joensuu that is better than memory — more Karelian, more personal, more cared-for.
