Zermatt in winter in one paragraph

Zermatt is a car-free mountain village below the Matterhorn, with a big ski area and a mountain railway to Gornergrat. Iglu-Dorf Zermatt opens on 19 December 2026 and runs until 4 April 2027, with ten overnight igloos for up to 24 guests, making it the smallest of the three Swiss villages. It sits at about 2,700 m just below the Rotenboden station.

Getting there

Drivers park at Täsch and take the train to Zermatt, leaving Täsch by 3:30 pm at the latest. The Gornergrat Bahn valley station is across the road from Zermatt station. The train for igloo guests leaves around 4:00 pm and takes about 30 minutes to Rotenboden, where you meet at 4:30 pm. Buy the Igloo Ticket (Zermatt–Rotenboden return) unless you have a valid ski pass; cableway and train tickets are not included in the igloo price. The day walk from the station to the village is about 20 minutes, and night guests are never allowed to walk up alone.

A two-night Zermatt plan

Night one in a hotel to arrive and rest. Day two: ski or walk in the morning, store your bags in a locker at Zermatt station (chargeable; there are none at Rotenboden), pack a backpack and catch the 4:00 pm train. Night two: Iglu-Dorf, with welcome drink, igloo tour, fondue, whirlpool and sauna. Morning: breakfast buffet at Hotel Riffelhaus until 9:30, about 15 minutes downhill on foot from 8:00. The igloos

The Family & Friends Igloo in Zermatt sleeps up to four from CHF 627 per night for three people; it is currently handled by phone or e-mail rather than online. The Matterhorn view: honest expectations

The setting is the draw, but clouds and storms can hide any mountain. Iglu-Dorf runs in almost any weather, with exceptions for extreme storms, lack of snow or a cableway stop; in those cases it offers another date or location, a voucher or a refund, usually decided by midday on the day. Do not book purely for a guaranteed view.

Cold, kit and comfort

Expect −2 to +2 °C in the igloo, shared dry toilets and running water and showers in the village per Iglu-Dorf’s FAQ. Bring warm shoes, two hats, gloves, dry socks, a headlamp, sunglasses and swimwear. Read our packing list.

Which nights the code works

Our code covers stays from 4 January to 4 April 2027, Sunday to Thursday nights only. After 3 January the Zermatt hotel is listed as closed Monday to Wednesday. In practice that means Sunday and Thursday nights (Gstaad also Monday) — the live calendar on iglu-dorf.com shows exactly which nights are open. Build your Zermatt week around a Sunday or Thursday.

4. Scroll to “Promo-Code — Do you want to redeem a promo code?”, type HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5, press Add and check that the total has dropped by 5% before you confirm. The field above it, “Voucher”, is for gift vouchers, not for our code.
5. Confirm. You can cancel free of charge up to 60 days before the night; after that Iglu-Dorf charges 10% (59–30 days), 50% (29–7 days) and 100% (under 7 days or no-show), with refunds preferably as vouchers. Discounts are not cumulative.
