Winelands Bike Tour in December and January: Peak-Season Guide to Booking, Heat and Closures
Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks of the Cape Town summer, and the Bikes ‘n Wines tours in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are part of that rush. Here is how we would plan a Winelands bike day in December or January: which tour, which dates to avoid, how to handle the sun and the wind, and how to book with 5% off.

This guide is built from the live tour pages of Cape Adventure Brands (Bikes ‘n Wines, Cape Town Kayaks and Hiking Tours Cape Town) — prices, start times, ages and inclusions come straight from the operator, never invented.
A Winelands bike tour in December or January is a great idea, as long as you book early and choose your date with the closures in mind. Bikes ‘n Wines is closed on 25 and 26 December and on 1 and 2 January, and the operator itself flags November to March as peak season. For families, the Stellenbosch Family Tour5% off via our link (R1,150 per person) and Franschhoek Family Tour5% off via our link (R1,450) take all ages. For adults, the half-day Stellenbosch Half Day Winelands Cycle Tour5% off via our link (R1,150) is the budget option and the Stellenbosch Luxury Winelands EBike Tour5% off via our link (R2,295) is the full-day treat. Why December and January Are Brilliant (and Busy) for a Winelands Ride
If you are coming from Finland, the pitch is easy to make: you leave the dark of a Rovaniemi December and land in a Cape Town summer with no jet lag, because South Africa is on SAST (UTC+2) and the time difference to Finland is zero or one hour. The days are long, the vineyards are green and heavy with fruit, and the Winelands are set up for people who want to spend a day outside.
The flip side is that everybody else has the same idea. Bikes ‘n Wines states on its tour pages that November to March is peak season, and the Christmas to New Year stretch is the peak of the peak. Departures need a minimum of two guests, groups are small, and the operator’s own advice is to book in advance. We cannot see how many places are left on any given day, so we will not claim a number, but we would not leave a December or January date to the last week.
The other thing to know is that peak-season riding is a different experience from a winter ride. It is hot, dry and bright, and the Cape’s famous south-easter (locals call it the Cape Doctor) can blow hard in summer. That is not a reason to avoid it. It is a reason to pick a morning start, bring the right kit and choose a tour whose pace suits the group.
The Dates to Plan Around: Closures and the Christmas Squeeze
According to the operator, Bikes ‘n Wines is open almost every day of the year, with these exceptions: 25 and 26 December, 1 and 2 January, and the Easter weekend. That gives you a clear planning rule. If your trip runs over Christmas, the 24th and the 27th are your realistic Winelands days either side of the closure, and for New Year the 31st and the 3rd.

Our suggestion for a Christmas week is to put the bike day early, ideally before the 24th, so that a postponement caused by wind or weather still leaves you a spare day. If you arrive after Christmas, look at the 27th to the 30th and treat the 31st as a bonus day. If a day is closed or full, the other valley is usually the answer: Stellenbosch and Franschhoek run the same style of tour from different start points, so a sold-out Stellenbosch date does not mean the end of the plan.
Remember also that restaurants, estate cellars and the roads between Cape Town and the Winelands are busy at this time of year. We would allow extra time to reach a 10:00 start, which brings us to the practical bit below.
Which Tour in Peak Season? A Comparison
Here is how the main Bikes ‘n Wines Winelands options compare, taken from the live tour pages in October 2026. Prices are per person and the rand figures are the ones shown by the operator.
| Tour | Price | Time | Distance / difficulty | Ages | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stellenbosch Family Tour | R1,150 | 10:00–13:30 | 15 km · 3/5 | All ages | Families with kids of any age |
| Franschhoek Family Tour | R1,450 | 10:00–13:30 | 15 km · 2/5 | All ages | A gentler, village-flavoured family morning |
| Stellenbosch Half Day Cycle Tour | R1,150 | 10:00 or 13:30 start | 15 km · 3/5 | 16+ | Adults on a budget |
| Stellenbosch Half Day E-Bike Tour | R1,395 | 10:00 or 13:30 start | 15 km · 2/5 | 16+, riders 155 cm+ | Hot days, easier legs |
| Stellenbosch Luxury E-Bike Tour | R2,295 | 10:00–16:00 | 15–20 km · 3/5 | 16+, riders 155 cm+ | Full day, 4 estates and platter lunch |
| Franschhoek Luxury E-Bike Tour | R2,795 | 10:00–16:00 | 20 km · 2/5 | 16+, riders 155 cm+ | Cellar tour, pairings, 4 estates |
The dark-horse choice for summer is the half-day tour that starts at 13:30, which the Stellenbosch half-day cycle and e-bike tours offer as an alternative to the 10:00 start. We would not pick the afternoon slot for a hot day, though; the cooler morning ride is the better bet unless you have a late flight in or a good reason to sleep in.
Families: Why December Is the Month for the Family Tours
December and January are also school-holiday months, both for local families and for visitors from the northern hemisphere’s mid-winter break, so a Winelands day with children is a very common plan. The two family tours are the only Bikes ‘n Wines tours with no minimum age. The operator supplies baby seats and buggies for children under six and children’s mountain bikes for those over six, with equipment available from 12 months, and every other tour in the range is 16+.

The Stellenbosch Family Tour5% off via our link starts at Skilpadvlei Wine Farm, covers about 15 km and is rated 3 out of 5. The Franschhoek Family Tour5% off via our link starts at Basse Provence Country Estate, covers about 15 km and is rated 2 out of 5; the operator describes Franschhoek as the gentler, more relaxed option with a village and food focus. Both include the bikes, helmets, child seats or buggies, bottled water, a light snack, wine tastings for adults at two estates and non-alcoholic tastings and pairings for children. Lunch, tips and extra wine are on your own account.
If your children are small, our advice is to choose Franschhoek in the hottest week and to go to bed early the night before. Both tours are self-drive only, so work out who is driving and where you will stay.

Summer riding in the Winelands is easy if you respect two things: sun and the south-easter. We are not going to quote temperatures, because they swing from day to day, but here is how we would prepare for a December or January ride:
- Sunscreen and a hat that fits under the helmet strap. Helmets are compulsory and provided, so bring a cap or buff for under it if you wish.
- Closed shoes. Sandals and flip-flops are a bad idea on a mountain bike.
- Water on top of the water provided. The operator includes bottled water and a light snack, but in peak heat we would carry a little more.
- A light long-sleeve layer for wind and sun; fabric that breathes works better than anything heavy.
- Sunglasses for the glare on gravel roads.
If the wind turns nasty the operator decides whether the tour runs. According to the cancellation policy on the Bikes ‘n Wines site, an operator weather cancellation brings a full refund, and the tours run in light rain. Check the current Terms & Conditions on the operator’s site before you book, because those are the binding wording.
A Peak-Season Day Plan: Morning Ride, Afternoon Off
The simplest peak-season day looks like this. Leave Cape Town early so that you reach the start point by 09:45 for a 10:00 departure. Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are both about an hour or less from the city centre depending on traffic, and December traffic can be heavier than you expect, so budget generously.

On a half-day tour you finish at 13:30 and lunch is for your own account. Book a table in advance in peak season; estate restaurants and village cafés fill up. After lunch, slow down: a swim in the guesthouse pool, a stroll through the town, or simply the drive home with the windows down.
For adults who want the whole day, the Stellenbosch Luxury Winelands EBike Tour5% off via our link runs from 10:00 to 16:00, covers 15 to 20 km on electric pedal-assist mountain bikes, visits four estates and includes a cheese and charcuterie platter lunch, exclusive vineyard access and gourmet pairings. The Franschhoek Luxury Winelands EBike Tour5% off via our link is R2,795 and adds a cellar tour and a platter-style lunch. Transfers for the luxury tours are bookable online, subject to availability, which is useful if you would rather not drive after tasting.
Rough Costs for a Family or a Couple
Here is the arithmetic for a few typical groups, using the operator’s per-person prices. The euro figures are rough and based on an exchange rate that moves, so treat them as a guide at the time of writing.
- Couple, Stellenbosch half-day cycle: 2 × R1,150 = R2,300, roughly €115.
- Couple, Stellenbosch luxury e-bike day: 2 × R2,295 = R4,590, roughly €230.
- Family of four on the Stellenbosch Family Tour: 4 × R1,150 = R4,600, roughly €230, with children’s equipment and non-alcoholic tastings included in the per-person price.
Add lunch, a driver or ride-hailing and tips. Compared with a guided half-day activity in Lapland in December, we think the rand prices are very fair, though that is our own judgement and not an operator claim. The 5% discount comes off in the booking flow when you use our tracked link, so the price on the tour page is the starting point, not the final amount.

FAQ
Is Bikes 'n Wines open at Christmas and New Year?
Not on every day. According to the operator, it is closed on 25 and 26 December and on 1 and 2 January (and over the Easter weekend), and open almost every other day of the year.
How far ahead should I book a Winelands bike tour for December or January?
The operator describes November to March as peak season and advises booking in advance. We would book as soon as your dates are fixed, especially for the week between Christmas and New Year.
Which tour is best for a family with young children?
The Stellenbosch Family Tour (R1,150 per person) or the Franschhoek Family Tour (R1,450). Both take all ages, with baby seats and buggies for under-sixes and children’s mountain bikes for over-sixes. Book through our link and 5% comes off automatically.
Is it too hot to cycle in the Winelands in summer?
The tours are designed for the Cape summer, with morning starts, water and a light snack included and short stops. Sun protection matters, and the operator decides if wind or weather affects a departure. The e-bike tours (16+, riders 155 cm or taller) take some of the effort out of a hot day.
What if the weather cancels my tour?
According to the operator’s policy, a weather cancellation made by the operator is refunded in full. For other cancellations, more than 72 hours before the tour is 90% refunded, inside 72 hours 50%, and inside 48 hours no refund. Always check the current Terms & Conditions.
Can two people book a tour, or do we need a bigger group?
A departure needs a minimum of two guests, so a couple is fine. Solo travellers can join an existing booking or book two seats, and private tours are available for a supplement.
Our Honest Final Word
We have not ridden these tours ourselves — we research them and send readers — but the peak-season advice is simple. Book early, respect the closures, choose a morning start and take the sun seriously. For families, the all-ages family tours are the most flexible products in the Bikes ‘n Wines range. For adults, the half-day cycle is the budget option and the luxury e-bike tour is the full day that makes a special occasion of it.
