The list from Iglu-Dorf
The villages’ pages ask guests to bring: warm winter clothing, warm winter shoes, good gloves, dry socks, long underwear and pyjamas, two hats, a bath towel, swimwear and flip-flops, a flashlight or headlamp, a toothbrush, sunglasses and sunscreen, and ski goggles. Backpacks are ideal; suitcases are not. Do not bring a sleeping bag, because the expedition bag and liner are included. You do not need cash in the Swiss villages: cards are accepted.

Clothing: how to dress for 0 °C
Inside the igloo it is about −2 to +2 °C, so you dress as for a cold but still day: a base layer, a warm mid layer, a hat and dry socks for the sleeping bag. Outside, in the evening on a mountain at 1,900–2,700 m, it can be much colder, so the outer layer and gloves matter more. We suggest keeping one set of clothes dry for the morning.

Two hats are on the list for a reason: one for walking, one for sleeping.
For the hot tub and sauna
Swimwear, a bath towel and flip-flops. The whirlpool and sauna are for overnight guests in the evening, with a private time slot per igloo agreed on arrival. Mixed sauna at all locations; the hot tub at Davos Klosters, Gstaad and Zermatt. Bring a warm robe or big towel for the short walk back.

Light, wash kit and small things
- a headlamp, because the village is dimly lit at night
- toothbrush and wet wipes; shared dry toilets have hand sanitiser
- sunglasses and sunscreen for the mountain in the day
- a power bank; the igloos have USB power connectors, but bring your own cable
- medication and a personal first aid item
Luggage by village
In Davos, a backpack is ideal and there are no lockers at the village; in Zermatt, chargeable lockers exist at Zermatt station but not at Rotenboden; in Gstaad skis may come along and there is a warm room for boots. Keep your luggage light because you carry it on a snow path.

What not to bring
Your own sleeping bag and a suitcase. Extra drinks are sold at the village and billed at the end of the evening. Dogs are allowed on request for CHF 25 per dog, with their own food, bowl, blanket and muzzle.
A one-night packing checklist
- Backpack
- Base layers and pyjamas
- Two hats, gloves, dry socks
- Winter shoes
- Swimwear, towel, flip-flops
- Headlamp, sunglasses, sunscreen
- Toothbrush, wet wipes, medication
- Phone, power bank, booking confirmation

Layering that works at about 0 °C
Think in three layers. A base layer next to the skin that dries quickly, a mid layer such as fleece or wool, and an outer layer that blocks the wind for the walk and the evening. For the sleeping bag, change into dry base layers and clean socks; sweat from the day is the most common reason people feel cold. Keep your hat on if you like. In our Lapland habit, we also carry a spare pair of dry socks in a bag.
Dinner versus bed versus hot tub
You effectively dress for three scenes: the evening on the mountain (outer layer, hat, gloves), the dinner in the igloo restaurant or kota (a mid layer; kotas are heated), and bed (dry base layers). The hot tub adds a fourth: swimwear, bath towel and flip-flops, plus something warm to throw on afterwards. Keep each in its own bag so you can find it in the dark.
Phones, cameras and cold
Phones and cameras tend to lose battery quickly in the cold, so keep them in an inner pocket and carry a power bank. The igloos have USB power connectors according to Iglu-Dorf’s feature list. Bring a short cable of your own. Snow and sunshine at altitude are bright, so sunglasses are on the official list for a reason.
Common packing mistakes
- a wheeled suitcase on a snow path
- cotton socks, which stay wet
- forgetting flip-flops and a towel for the hot tub
- no headlamp for the walk to the toilet
- bringing a sleeping bag, which Iglu-Dorf already supplies
If you are travelling with children or teenagers, pack their kit in separate bags so that each person can find their pyjamas and swimwear quickly, and read our guide for families before you go.
Packing for couples, families and friends
Couples can share a few items: one power bank, one first aid pouch, one big towel for the walk from hot tub to igloo. Keep the two sets of swimwear and flip-flops in a bag you can reach without unpacking the rest. Families should pack each child’s night clothes, swimwear and spare socks in a separate labelled bag, because rummaging for pyjamas by headlamp in a snow igloo is no fun. Iglu-Dorf recommends the stay for children from age 6. Groups of friends in the Family & Friends Igloo sleep side by side, so agree who carries what and keep personal bags small: there is little floor space and nothing to hang clothes on.
Everyone should carry their own headlamp, even if a friend has a spare. The walk to the shared dry toilets in the village centre is the one moment in the night when each person is alone in the dark.
The morning after
Tea is brought to your sleeping bag, and breakfast follows at a mountain restaurant or in the warm Kota, depending on the village. In Davos it is 8:30 am at Weissfluhjoch, in Zermatt a buffet at Hotel Riffelhaus until 9:30 after a walk of about 15 minutes downhill, in Gstaad at 8:00 or 9:00 depending on your booking. Pack so that you can get dressed in the cold: lay out tomorrow’s base layer and socks on top of your bag, and keep a small bag for damp swimwear so that it does not wet everything else.
If you ski the next day, tell yourself the night before where your goggles and sunscreen are. Sun at altitude is strong on snow, which is why Iglu-Dorf lists both on its packing list.
How to book your igloo night with HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5
There are no special links or tracking cookies in this partnership. The code typed at checkout is the only thing that gives you the 5% and registers the booking as ours, so it is the one step not to skip. We are Iglu-Dorf’s affiliate partner and earn a small commission when you book with our code; it costs you nothing extra.
- Pick your village and igloo. Open Iglu-Dorf5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 or the quick-booking page on iglu-dorf.com and choose the village and the igloo type.
- Add your guests first (adults 16+, teenagers 10–15, children up to 9). The date calendar only appears after that. Choose a Sunday-to-Thursday night between 4 January and 4 April 2027 — in practice Sunday and Thursday nights (Gstaad also Monday) — the live calendar on iglu-dorf.com shows exactly which nights are open.
- Fill in guest details and extras: single sleeping bags instead of a double (free), a dog (CHF 25), a vegetarian or pasta dinner alternative, a surprise cake or a rose in ice.
- Find the “Promo-Code” box (“Do you want to redeem a promo code?”), type HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 and press Add. Check that the total drops by 5% before you confirm. The “Voucher” box above it is for gift vouchers, not for our code.
- Confirm and pay. You can cancel free of charge up to 60 days before the night; after that Iglu-Dorf charges 10% (59–30 days), 50% (29–7 days) and 100% (under 7 days or no-show), with refunds preferably as vouchers. Discounts are not cumulative.
For the Family & Friends Igloo in Zermatt, which Iglu-Dorf currently takes by enquiry only, write to info@iglu-dorf.com or call +41 41 612 27 28 and put the code in your message.
Who should skip it
An igloo night is not for everyone, and we would rather say so now. It is not a good fit for children under about 6 (Iglu-Dorf recommends the stay from age 6 and offers no changing tables, highchairs or childcare), for anyone who needs a private bathroom in the night (the toilets are shared and dry; the “Plus” igloo with a private toilet is not part of our code), for people who cannot walk in snow with a backpack, or for light sleepers who dislike sleeping at about 0 °C. Wheelchairs and limited mobility are not supported either. And if you can only travel on a Friday or Saturday, the code does not apply to those nights.

Our Honest Final Word
Packing for an igloo night is mostly packing for a cold evening in the mountains and one night at about 0 °C. A backpack, dry layers and a headlamp matter more than anything fancy. We have not slept there yet; the list follows Iglu-Dorf’s own pages.
