Short answer

Overwater bungalows in Panama are not what you’d find in the Maldives; the Caribbean coast is better known for beachfront and stilted lodges. Casa Cayuco does not have overwater bungalows, but it does have an over-water rancho on the dock, hammocks over the sea and beachfront bungalows a few steps from calm water. Overwater bungalows in Panama: the honest picture

Many travellers imagine thatched huts on stilts above a turquoise lagoon when they search for overwater bungalows. In Panama, that style exists mainly in a handful of lodges on the Bocas del Toro coast, where stilted architecture over shallow water is traditional. It is not a mass-market product, and availability and quality vary a lot.

We are family travellers from Rovaniemi, Finland, not insiders at every Bocas lodge, so we won’t list properties we haven’t researched. What we can describe in detail is the one we partner with, and what it offers if what you really want is sleeping beside the sea.

What you actually want from an overwater stay

When we ask people why they want an overwater bungalow, the answers are usually the same: fall asleep to water sounds, step into the sea without a beach walk, get that photograph from the deck. Those are three different things, and a beachfront room can deliver all three in many cases.

  • Water sounds: a beachfront bungalow with a porch near the waves or a sheltered bay delivers this daily.
  • Easy swimming: a calm beach beats a ladder off a platform for children and nervous swimmers.
  • The photograph: a dock with hammocks over the water gives you the view with none of the maintenance of a stilt room.

What Casa Cayuco has over the water

Casa Cayuco does not have overwater bungalows. What it does have is an over-water rancho at the end of its dock with hammocks, a large communal table for dinners on the dock with rays gliding past, and a private option for special occasions: a meal for two at the end of the dock, on request. The photographs on the lodge’s pages show hammocks suspended over the sea and a starry night above the rancho.

The dock is also the lodge’s front door to the water: boats leave from it for the Zapatillas Islands, ten minutes away, and the calm bay beside it is where kayaks and paddle boards go out.

The beachfront bungalows that do the job

For the sleep-beside-the-sea feeling, the beachfront bungalows are the closest match:

Who should stay here, and who shouldn't

If you want a literal stilt room, look elsewhere. If you want a quiet beach, a dock for dinners under the stars and a bungalow you can walk out of straight into the sea, this is a good fit. Remember the practical rules: a three-night minimum, guests 5 and older, and no air conditioning outside the villa.

Planning a dinner over the water

The dock is where Casa Cayuco does its most memorable evenings. A large table on the dock hosts communal dinners under the stars, and rays glide past below. For something more private, the lodge can set a meal for two on your porch or at the end of the dock for special occasions. This is on request, so mention it when you book or at check-in, along with any dietary needs. Dinner is a three-course meal and the menu leans plant-based, with fresh fish from the local fishermen’s evening catch.

New Year’s Eve is the lodge’s big night: a dinner on the dock, a champagne toast and fireworks. There is an extra per-person charge for 31 December, which is included in that night’s rate, and it’s wise to look at dates early.

When to go for the best sea conditions

The lodge lists February to April and August to October as the generally drier months, with February, March, September and October the driest. The calmest sea for swimming and snorkelling is August to October, although protected snorkel spots work all year. From November to April the surf swell is biggest, which is good news for surfers and less so for anyone who wants flat water off the beach. Rain usually falls at night and clears by late morning, and Panama sits outside the hurricane belt.

If you want to combine a dock dinner, quiet water and sunshine, September and October are very tempting; if you want to avoid the busiest holiday weeks, aim for a shoulder month. Whatever you choose, check live availability, because the lodge sleeps a maximum of 53 guests and popular weeks fill up.
