What off-grid really means on a Panama island
The Bocas del Toro archipelago is a chain of islands separated by mangrove channels. Many of the beaches and villages beyond Bocas Town have no road and no mains connection, so lodges either bring in generators and fuel by boat or build their own systems. That is where the phrase ‘off-grid’ comes from: power, water and waste are handled on site.
For guests the practical question is simple. Does the light stay on? Can I charge my phone? Is the water safe? Is the toilet going to be a compromise? A well-designed off-grid lodge answers yes to all four. A badly designed one answers in the negative. The difference is design and maintenance, not the absence of a grid.
How Casa Cayuco runs: solar, rainwater, compost
According to Casa Cayuco’s own sustainability page, the lodge is powered by solar energy with no outages, supported by clean-burning propane for cooking. Rainwater is harvested and purified for the whole property. The team composts, recycles and buys in bulk to cut packaging, uses low-flow showerheads and stocks organic bath products. Soap and hair care are Punta Coco, handmade in Bocas.

For guests that translates into 24/7 electricity from standard US-style Type A 110 V outlets. Hair dryers are discouraged because of the load on the system; everything else, including phones and camera batteries, is fine.
What you give up (and what you don't)
| Worry | Reality at Casa Cayuco |
|---|---|
| Power cuts | The lodge reports solar power with no outages |
| Internet | High-speed wifi in the accommodations |
| Heat | High-powered ceiling fans; air conditioning only in the Estrella De Mar villa |
| Hot food | Three meals and an afternoon snack included, plant-based plus fresh fish |
| Shopping | None on site — Bocas Town is 30–35 min by boat |
| Hair dryers | Please leave them at home |
What you give up is spontaneity. You cannot walk out to a restaurant at 9 pm or a pharmacy at noon, so pack anything essential in advance. What you gain is quiet, dark skies over the dock and a stay that leaves a small footprint.
A stay that supports the neighbouring village
Off-grid does not mean out of the community. Casa Cayuco employs 28 people from Salt Creek, a Ngäbe-Buglé village of about 900 people a short boat ride away. They walk to work, and the lodge says their wages support more than 200 villagers. A portion of every stay funds village projects, including the Salt Creek Medical Outpost run by the nonprofit Floating Doctors, which holds monthly clinics. A guided Salt Creek tour is included in every stay.

Getting to a lodge without roads
Most guests fly from Panama City’s Albrook airport to Bocas del Toro with Air Panama, about 50 minutes. The lodge’s recommended Flight 980 lands around 2:00 pm, and the captain meets you with a sign for the included scheduled boat, which leaves Bocas Town around 3:00 pm for a ride of roughly 30–35 minutes. The return boat leaves the lodge around 12:30 pm. Other times are possible as private transfers for a fee. Our full routes are in how to get to Bocas del Toro and Casa Cayuco.
A day at an off-grid lodge: what to expect
Days run on daylight. Coffee and tea, made from locally grown small-batch beans, are waiting in the morning, followed by a chef’s-choice breakfast at the communal tables. After that, the lodge hands over its water toys: sea kayaks, stand-up paddle boards and snorkel gear are included, as are yoga mats for the jungle deck. Guided excursions are extra and planned on arrival with the in-house guides, so there is nothing to pre-book from home.

The food follows the same off-grid logic. The lodge describes a mostly plant-based menu with fresh fish that local fishermen catch by hand line and bring to the dock by cayuco every evening, coconut milk and nut butters made in-house, and ingredients such as cacao from the village and chocolate from Green Acres Chocolate Farm in Dolphin Bay. The afternoon snack is brought to wherever you are, and dinner is three courses. Allergies and diets are accommodated, though the kitchen uses nuts and gluten, so tell the lodge in advance.
After dark there is little light pollution. Expect the dock, the stars and the sounds of the jungle rather than a nightlife scene, and that is the point of the place.
What to pack when there is no shop nearby
The nearest shops are in Bocas Town, 30–35 minutes away by boat, so pack with intention. The lodge’s own list is short and sensible: reef-safe sunscreen, natural insect repellent, a flashlight or headlamp, trail or water shoes and a light rain jacket. We would add a refillable water bottle, any prescription medicines, a small dry bag for boat rides and enough cash in small US bills for crafts in Salt Creek and chocolate at the chocolate farm. Panama uses the US dollar, and the lodge accepts cash, bank transfer or credit card for payment on site.
If you want to give something back, the lodge participates in Pack for a Purpose, which asks travellers to bring school or medical supplies for the village of Salt Creek.

Who should skip it
If you need air conditioning in every room, constant shopping options or a lively night scene, a town hotel will suit you better. Children must be 5 or older. If you like the idea of living lightly for three nights or more, with the rainforest at one door and the sea at the other, we think an off-grid lodge done well is the best way to see the archipelago.

Our Honest Final Word
Off-grid is a design choice, and in Panama it can be done with fans, wifi and warm meals. What we like about Casa Cayuco is that the sustainability is not marketing gloss — solar, rainwater, composting and a village-based staff are on the lodge’s own pages. We would choose it for the calm and the footprint, not because it’s the cheapest way to see Bocas.
