Why Gstaad is the gentle igloo village

Gstaad is in the Bernese Oberland, and Iglu-Dorf Gstaad sits just below the Saanerslochgrat mountain station, lower than Davos Klosters or Zermatt. It has 10 overnight igloos for up to 40 guests, a season that runs 25 December 2026 to 4 April 2027, and the shortest walk from the lift for day guests: five to seven minutes.

It is also the village Iglu-Dorf’s FAQ points to for guests with small children or during pregnancy, simply because it is lower. We would still not take a child under six, but Gstaad is the village to start from if you are unsure.

The igloo or the TinyLodge?

The TinyLodge is a heated wooden cabin at the village with a large panoramic window, a heater, a kettle with free tea and coffee, and a bed measuring 1.55 × 2.00 m with blankets and pillows. You use the village toilets, and breakfast is in the warm Kota the next morning. It is for two, from CHF 438 per night as published in November 2026, which is a hundred francs below the Romantic Igloo. Iglu-Dorf’s page compares the two: igloo at about 0 °C with an expedition mattress and sheepskins versus a heated cabin with a comfortable mattress.

One caution: the TinyLodge page has wording about next winter, while the booking finder shows it for this season. If the calendar shows it for your date, it is bookable; if not, ask Iglu-Dorf.

Getting to Gstaad’s igloos by train and cable car

Gstaad is different: Iglu-Dorf opens at 4:00 pm, and check-in is at 4:30 pm at the bar in the village with an aperitif. You take the train to Saanenmöser, walk about four minutes to the valley station of the Saanenmöser–Saanerslochgrat cable car, and ride to Saanerslochgrat. The cable car only runs during regular ski hours, so be there on time. Tickets are bought at the valley station and a MagicPass is valid. If you drive, overnight parking is at the back of the station car park.

In the morning there is tea in the sleeping bag at 7:30 or 8:30 and breakfast at 8:00 or 9:00, depending on your booking. Skis can come along, and there is a warm room for boots.

The Gstaad evening: fondue, hot tub, snowshoes

The programme is the shared Iglu-Dorf one: welcome drink, igloo tour, an all-you-can-eat cheese fondue (pasta with tomato sauce is the alternative at Gstaad), snowshoeing or a night walk, and the sauna and outdoor whirlpool in a private slot. Gstaad also offers a Mystery-Igloo puzzle game for CHF 35 per person, paid on the spot, and the Romantic Igloo extras: a surprise cake (CHF 15), a rose in ice (CHF 29), rose petals (CHF 25), champagne in the room (CHF 52) or Candle Light, a fondue with a bottle of wine at a table for two (CHF 99). Dogs are allowed on request for CHF 25.

Cold and toilets in Gstaad

The igloos stay between about −2 and +2 °C. Toilets are shared dry toilets; Iglu-Dorf’s FAQ lists running water and showers for Gstaad. The TinyLodge is the one place where you are warm all night.

Gstaad nights: Sunday, Monday and Thursday

Gstaad has an advantage with the code. Iglu-Dorf’s FAQ lists the Gstaad hotel as closed on Tuesday and Wednesday after 3 January, so HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (Sunday to Thursday nights, 4 January to 4 April 2027) should work on Sunday, Monday and Thursday nights; Davos and Zermatt only get Sunday and Thursday. That is our reading of the FAQ — the live calendar on iglu-dorf.com shows exactly which nights are open, and we never promise a night it does not show.

Gstaad in winter beyond the igloo

Gstaad is known as a smart Swiss resort, but you do not need to spend like it: arrive, do the igloo, and use the day for skiing, a train ride or a walk. The MagicPass area is the lift pass Iglu-Dorf mentions. We would spend one night here and a second night in a warm hotel in the valley.

All three villages carry the same published igloo prices, so choose by who is going and how comfortable you want the logistics to be. Couples who want a warm bed can take the TinyLodge; groups of up to six can take the Family & Friends Igloo; both are covered by HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 for stays between 4 January and 4 April 2027, on Sunday to Thursday nights only.

How to book your igloo night with HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5

There are no special links or tracking cookies in this partnership. The code typed at checkout is the only thing that gives you the 5% and registers the booking as ours, so it is the one step not to skip. We are Iglu-Dorf’s affiliate partner and earn a small commission when you book with our code; it costs you nothing extra.

  1. Pick your village and igloo. Open TinyLodge — Gstaad5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 or the quick-booking page on iglu-dorf.com and choose the village and the igloo type.
  2. Add your guests first (adults 16+, teenagers 10–15, children up to 9). The date calendar only appears after that. Choose a Sunday-to-Thursday night between 4 January and 4 April 2027 — in practice Sunday and Thursday nights (Gstaad also Monday) — the live calendar on iglu-dorf.com shows exactly which nights are open.
  3. Fill in guest details and extras: single sleeping bags instead of a double (free), a dog (CHF 25), a vegetarian or pasta dinner alternative, a surprise cake or a rose in ice.
  4. Find the “Promo-Code” box (“Do you want to redeem a promo code?”), type HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 and press Add. Check that the total drops by 5% before you confirm. The “Voucher” box above it is for gift vouchers, not for our code.
  5. Confirm and pay. You can cancel free of charge up to 60 days before the night; after that Iglu-Dorf charges 10% (59–30 days), 50% (29–7 days) and 100% (under 7 days or no-show), with refunds preferably as vouchers. Discounts are not cumulative.

Who should skip Gstaad

An igloo night is not for everyone, and we would rather say so now. It is not a good fit for children under about 6 (Iglu-Dorf recommends the stay from age 6 and offers no changing tables, highchairs or childcare), for anyone who needs a private bathroom in the night (the toilets are shared and dry; the “Plus” igloo with a private toilet is not part of our code), for people who cannot walk in snow with a backpack, or for light sleepers who dislike sleeping at about 0 °C. Wheelchairs and limited mobility are not supported either. And if you can only travel on a Friday or Saturday, the code does not apply to those nights.
