Why Two People Might Choose an Off-Grid Village in Winter

We live in Rovaniemi, where a January week means darkness by mid-afternoon and −20 °C. So when we look at Lanzarote for winter sun, we notice the same thing every time: the numbers are gentle. The operator’s weather table shows an average of 18 °C in January and February and 19 °C in March, with 16, 18 and 12 mm of rain. It is not beach-holiday heat, but it is the kind of air in which you can eat breakfast outside, and that is what a couple’s break needs.

Finca de Arrieta is the operator’s flagship: 21 self-catering homes at Arrieta on the north-east coast, run off-grid on solar panels with generator back-up, with a solar-heated 13 m × 2.5 m shared pool that is open all year. It is about 20 km from Arrecife airport and a 300 m track from the golden sand of Playa de la Garita. It is also a place where children 17 and under stay free, so you will meet families. That is the honest trade-off for couples, and we come back to it below.

We have not stayed here. What follows comes from Lanzarote Retreats’ property pages, its company information and its booking engine, and we say so wherever it matters.

The Four Couple-Friendly Homes at a Glance

Eco Tower: The Converted Windmill

The Eco Tower5% off · code inside is the original windmill of the Finca, restored as a first-floor apartment of 25 m². The operator describes a light, airy room in wood, glass and local stone, with marble floors, a king-size 180 cm bed and an en-suite shower room. There is tea and coffee-making, two hobs and a small fridge in the room, plus shared use of a fully equipped kitchen in the communal area by the pool. A table and chairs on the balcony face the sea and mountains, and the operator promises 360° views.

The honest limits are in the numbers. It is a single room, so there is nowhere to retreat if one of you wants to read while the other sleeps. Cooking means the little hobs or walking to the shared kitchen. The Tower can host one child with a child’s bed or travel cot, which is useful, but it will not feel like a romantic nest with a toddler in it. For two adults it is the least expensive home here that is not a yurt, and for the views alone it is our first suggestion.

Eco Casita: A Walled Garden for Two

The Eco Casita5% off · code inside is a semi-detached 40 m² home set beside the pool and chill-out area. The operator lists a walled and gated large garden with a BBQ, sun loungers and a table and chairs for dining outside, a contemporary interior, a private kitchen and free fast wifi. The living room has a double sofa bed, and the operator says a z-bed and travel cot can be added, so it works for a couple with one small child as well.

This is the one to pick if privacy matters more than height. You get your own outdoor space rather than a balcony, which suits long breakfasts and evenings when the air is cooler. The trade-off is that it sits close to the shared pool area, so expect the sounds of a family village during the day. It cost roughly €8 a night more than the Tower in our January sample (€942 against €887 for the week, a €55 difference), which is a small step for a private garden and a full kitchen.

Eco Ocean Yurt: The Skylight and the Budget Pick

The Eco Ocean Yurt5% off · code inside is a 6 m Mongolian yurt that the operator calls secluded and private, with twin beds pushed together, ocean views and a central skylight for stargazing. There is a private WC and shower hut, and the kitchen is shared, with a BBQ. It sleeps 2 adults and 2 children, so most couples will be the only people in it.

At €636 for our January week it is the cheapest way for two people to sleep at the Finca. It is also the most exposed to the weather, even though the operator says its yurts are double-lined and naturally insulated and that the village needs neither heating nor air conditioning, with temperatures of around 18–28 °C all year. If you are the kind of couple who packs a fleece and likes the sound of rain on canvas, it is hard to beat for the money. If you want a kitchen at your own door, look at the Casita instead.

Eco Yurt Royale: The Splurge With the Outdoor Bath

The Eco Yurt Royale5% off · code inside is the largest yurt on the Finca at 83 m², with a private walled terrace and garden, a raised gazebo, a bamboo dining hut, a kitchen and lounge, a private WC and shower hut and an outdoor bath. It is built for up to 6 adults and 3 children, but the operator itself says it is often booked by couples who want a lot of private space.

That space has a price: €1,330 for our January week, about €190 a night, roughly twice the Ocean Yurt. If you are celebrating something, or working remotely and need room to spread out, it is the most distinctive stay here. If you only want somewhere to sleep, it is more than you need.

What Your Days Look Like in Arrieta

Arrieta is a small fishing village of about 400 people in the Haría municipality, with no purpose-built resort. The operator lists seafront fish restaurants, a pizzeria with take-away and a supermarket. Playa de la Garita, reached by the 300 m track from the Finca, is 810 m of fine golden sand with a restaurant and beach bar, showers, WC and parking, and the water is generally calm.

At the Finca there is an honesty shop open 24/7, a welcome pack of cava, water, milk, wine, coffee and tea, and a Monday paella evening, subject to availability. The operator also lists massages in the Zen Yurt, yoga, wine tasting and guided hikes as extras. Winter evenings can be cool, and the operator’s own packing advice from October to March is a fleece, a light waterproof and a wetsuit if you want serious time in the Atlantic. We would add sun protection even in January.

What to Know Before You Book

• Off-grid living: you can use normal appliances, but the homes have no dishwasher, TV, electric kettle or iron to save energy, and hairdryers are available on request.
• Minimum stay: flexible arrival days and 3-night stays, or 2 nights if you arrive within a month.
• Check-in and out: from 16:00 and by 10:00, with early or late for 50% of a nightly rate, subject to availability.
• Payment: a 30% non-refundable deposit, with the balance 30 days before arrival. Cancelling inside 30 days retains 100%, so we would take out travel insurance.
• Getting there: private airport transfers can be quoted with a free 5-seater car for up to 7 days, with 48 hours’ notice. A bus stop is on the main road by the Finca.
• Non-smoking, no pets: with a card authorisation as a damage deposit.

Because this is a village with families in it, we would not promise silence. If quiet is non-negotiable, say so when you contact the reservations team and ask which corner of the Finca they would suggest.
