Britain is a good country for a motorhome in theory and a stressful one in practice: green lanes, castle car parks and Highland coast roads on one side, narrow lanes and few places to stop on the other. Before you worry about the lanes, though, there is a simpler question. How much does it cost?

This is a pricing guide, not a trip report. All numbers come from the CampervanPlanet UK motorhome hire cost page, which analyses real prices from three rental companies as of October 2026. We have kept to what the page shows and avoided guessing.

For hiring basics beyond the UK, see our our campervan rental guide.

Short Answer

UK motorhome hire typically costs about €115 a day from November to March, €133 in April and May, €149 in September and October and €185 from June to August for a 7-night hire. A week costs from about €802 in winter and €1,295 in summer. The cheapest offer in the search was €78 a day. Compare current prices here, and code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY20 takes €20 off at checkout.

The price by season

The page presents the typical (median) price for a 7-night rental for two people, picked up and returned at the same place. From November to March it is about €115 a day, or roughly €802 for the week. In April and May it rises to about €133 a day, and in September and October to about €149. From June to August it reaches about €185 a day, or around €1,295 for the week.

Month by month, January was the cheapest at a typical €97 a day, and July the most expensive at €193 a day. If your dates are flexible, the difference between a January week and a July week is nearly €700 on these figures. That is a big enough gap to plan around.

Three companies, three price levels

The page compares three rental companies. McRent, collecting from London Heathrow, had the lowest typical price at about €112 a day, with about €90 in winter and €163 in summer. Indie Campers, collecting from Manchester, showed about €146 a day, with roughly €137 in winter and €186 in summer. Touring Cars, collecting from Chester, showed about €287 a day, or €261 in winter and €339 in summer.

The page cautions that these are not directly comparable: Touring Cars rents larger motorhomes, so a higher price reflects a bigger vehicle. Pick-up location also affects your trip. Heathrow suits international arrivals, while Manchester and Chester are better for northern England, Wales and Scotland.

The cheapest company is not always the best deal. Compare the vehicle size, the insurance cover and the pick-up location, not just the daily rate.

What affects the total price

Dates are the biggest factor, as the numbers above show. Vehicle size is the second: a compact camper costs less than a large coach-built motorhome. Rental length matters too, because many companies discount longer hires. Pick-up location can affect price and your driving plan.

Extras add up. Think about insurance excess reduction, bedding and kitchen kits, camping chairs, a second driver, and a one-way fee. Fuel is a separate cost, and UK fuel prices are among the higher ones in Europe, so check the current price per litre. Ferries to islands such as Skye or the Isle of Wight, and car parks, can add up on a longer trip.

Ways to save money

First, travel outside July and August. Autumn and early spring give mild weather in many parts of Britain and lower prices. Second, choose a smaller vehicle if you are travelling as a couple, since compact campers are easier to park on narrow roads and cheaper to run. Third, compare several companies for the same dates rather than sticking to one brand.

Fourth, decide whether you need a one-way hire. Dropping off in a different place can add a fee, so a round trip is usually cheaper. Fifth, think about the length of hire: a week is the typical unit in the data, and multi-week hires may have better daily rates.

Finally, use a discount code. Our code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY20 takes €20 off your booking at checkout on CampervanPlanet, which is a small but real saving.

Where to stay in the UK

In the UK, wild camping rules differ by country. In Scotland, outdoor access rights are generous for tents but are less clear for motorhomes, and in England and Wales, wild camping generally needs the landowner’s permission. In practice, most motorhome travellers use campsites, caravan clubs and pub stopovers that welcome motorhomes. Many British campsites require booking in summer.

The CampervanPlanet’s UK motorhome page lists pick-up options in more detail. If you like mountains and coast roads, the Highlands are an obvious choice, and we explain why in our post on longer trips.

Driving a motorhome in Britain

Britain drives on the left, and many roads are narrow with passing places, especially in the Highlands and the islands. Take it slowly, pull in to let others pass and be ready for stone walls and hedges on both sides. Low bridges are common, so know your van’s height.

Parking in towns can be difficult, and many car parks have height barriers. Use park-and-ride schemes where possible. Low emission zones in some cities can apply to older diesel vehicles, so check the rules for places such as London.

Booking checklist

Check the deposit, insurance excess, kilometre allowance and cancellation terms. Confirm that the pick-up and drop-off times suit your flights. Ask about equipment: bedding, gas, a toilet cassette and electric hook-up cable. And check whether you need any special licence for the vehicle you choose.
