Where Ersfjord is and why people go

Ersfjord and its neighbour Grøtfjord lie on Kvaløya, the large island west of Tromsø that you reach over a bridge from the city. They are two of the nearest places where you can see a proper fjord with mountains falling into the sea, which is why people who have only half a day choose them. You do not need a rental car, a map or confidence on snowy roads: the tour collects you in town and returns you there.

The scenery is the kind that the region is known for: steep peaks, still water, small settlements and open views toward the sea. We keep our Tromsø activities guide as our central list for everything else on offer in the area.

Ersfjord in winter

In winter the fjord is a study in blue, white and grey. From late November to mid January the sun does not rise above the horizon in Tromsø, so the 10:00 pickup puts you out in soft twilight with colours that shift over a few hours. The mountains are covered in snow, the water is dark and still, and the air is cold and clear. It is a different world from a summer fjord and, to many of us, a more dramatic one.

Dress warmly. The wind can pick up at the water’s edge, and photo stops mean standing still. Wear boots with a good sole, thermal layers and a hat, and bring gloves that let you use a phone. After February the light returns quickly, and the same tour becomes a bright winter-day outing.

Ersfjord in summer

The operator lists the tour as a year-round experience, so you can also see Ersfjord in summer, when the same coast is green and the light lasts through the night during the midnight sun season. Water, mountains and sky look completely different, and the days are long enough that a morning tour leaves you plenty of time for the rest of the day.

For visitors who come in summer, the fjord tour pairs well with the Tromsø Highlights & History Tour with E-bike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5, a 3-hour city tour at NOK 1,250 per person for ages 10 and up, so one day can cover both the city and the coast. Pickup times for the e-bike tour are 10:00, 14:30 and 19:00. We would pick a fjord morning and an e-bike evening.

Shared or private?

The shared tour is the cheaper option for one to three people. The private tour is priced per group, so for four guests it works out at NOK 3,000 each, and for eight guests NOK 1,500 each, the same as the shared price. That is the point where private becomes obvious. For smaller groups, the private tour is a luxury, not a necessity, but it is also the only option for children under seven, because the shared tour recommends ages 7 and up.

The private tour also lets you choose the pickup location at checkout, which helps if you are staying outside the centre or in a rental apartment. With a small child, the freedom to stop when you need to is worth a lot.

Ersfjord or Sommarøy?

The usual question is whether to take the half-day Ersfjord tour or the full-day Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5. Our rule is simple. If you have a free day, take Sommarøy: it is 5–6 hours at NOK 2,100 per person, includes a local lunch and adds beaches and the far coast. If you have only a morning, or if you have an evening chase that you do not want to be tired for, take Ersfjord. The shorter tour is also the better choice for people who do not enjoy a long day in a vehicle.

Both pick up at 10:00, so you can decide the night before. The cancellation policy is the same: a full refund more than 48 hours before, a 100% charge inside 48 hours.

A half-day plan around the tour

A 3–4 hour tour starting at 10:00 finishes around early afternoon, which leaves the rest of the day open. A simple plan is breakfast in town, the tour, a late lunch back in the centre, and a rest before the evening. If you have a northern lights chase booked, the half-day tour is the sensible pairing for the same day because it leaves you rested. If you do not, an afternoon in the centre is easy: cafes, shops and a short walk along the waterfront.

On a short trip to Tromsø, we would book the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 for one evening and the Ersfjord tour for the morning after, so you can sleep a little later after a long night. That is a pattern that works for almost every group we know. It also keeps your costs in check: NOK 1,500 plus NOK 2,300 is NOK 3,800 per person for a full day-and-night pairing.

What to wear and bring

Wear layers: a thermal base layer, a fleece or wool mid layer and a windproof outer layer. Boots with grip and warm socks matter more than a fancy coat. Hat, gloves and a neck warmer are essential in winter. Bring a small bag with water, a snack and your camera or phone. In summer, a light jacket, sunglasses and sunscreen are useful, and mosquito repellent is worth packing in the warmest months.

The private tour includes a warm drink and a cinnamon bun, so you do not need to bring a lot of food. On the shared tour, bring a snack in case you get hungry, and ask the guide about any stops where you can buy a drink. Remember that the cold shortens phone batteries, so keep your phone in an inside pocket between photos.
