What the fondue is

Iglu-Dorf describes it as an all-you-can-eat Swiss mountain cheese fondue, lactose-free and with less than 0.1% alcohol. That makes it more accessible than a traditional fondue for people who avoid alcohol or lactose, although anyone with a serious allergy should ask the operator when booking rather than rely on our summary. You dip bread into a shared pot, which is a Swiss custom, in the middle of a snow village.

Fondue is part of the programme in all three villages in our deal, and it is included in the price of the TinyLodge, the Romantic Igloo and the Family & Friends Igloo.

Where you eat it

In Davos Klosters the photos show an igloo restaurant with carved arches, wooden tables and sheepskin seats, and a wooden kota with an open fire. In Zermatt there is a long snow-art igloo restaurant with a bar and sculpted figures, and an outdoor terrace with views to the Matterhorn in the photos Iglu-Dorf publishes. In Gstaad, guests of the TinyLodge eat in the Iglu-Restaurant, and breakfast is in the warm Kota. The kota is heated in the evening at Davos, Gstaad and Zermatt, so dinner is in warmth even when the night is cold.

Alternatives: vegetarian, pasta, stew

If cheese fondue does not suit you, Iglu-Dorf offers alternatives on request at booking: a vegetable stew in Davos Klosters, and pasta with tomato sauce in Gstaad and Zermatt. Tell the operator when booking, in the comments field of the checkout, rather than on the day. For allergies we did not find a published list, so ask by e-mail (info@iglu-dorf.com) or phone (+41 41 612 27 28).

Drinks and what you pay on the spot

Other drinks, including alcohol, are ordered on site and billed at the end of the evening. Payment is possible in cash CHF or EUR or with Visa, Mastercard or Maestro in Gstaad, Davos and Zermatt. You do not need to bring cash for the Swiss villages. The fondue, welcome drink and aperitif tray are in the price.

The Candle Light upgrade

At Gstaad the Romantic Igloo checkout lists a Candle Light option: a fondue with a bottle of wine at a table for two, CHF 99. Other extras there are a surprise cake CHF 15, a rose in an ice block CHF 29, rose petals CHF 25, champagne in the room (0.375 L) CHF 52, and the Mystery-Igloo puzzle game CHF 35 per person, paid on the spot. Extras vary by village, so check the checkout for yours.

How dinner fits into the evening

A typical order: arrival at 4:00 pm (Davos) or 4:30 pm (Gstaad, Zermatt), welcome drink and aperitif tray, igloo tour, then fondue, then a voluntary night walk or snowshoeing, then your private hot tub and sauna slot. The timing differs by village and by season, so use the arrival information Iglu-Dorf sends after booking.

Swiss fondue etiquette, briefly

Stir in a figure of eight, do not double-dip, and if your bread falls into the pot, folklore says you owe the table something. These are general Swiss customs, not Iglu-Dorf rules; the guides will tell you how it works on the night. The point is that fondue is a social meal, which is why the Family & Friends Igloo suits groups.

Fondue night by village

VillageWhere you eatAlternative dish
Davos KlostersIgloo restaurant or wooden kota with open fireVegetable stew
GstaadIglu-Restaurant; TinyLodge breakfast in the warm KotaPasta with tomato sauce
ZermattSnow-art igloo restaurant, outdoor tables in good weatherPasta with tomato sauce

The cheese fondue is the same idea everywhere; the setting changes. Zermatt’s outdoor bar and restaurant is open to day guests too, with the kitchen running at lunchtime, while the evening fondue is for overnight guests. Check the arrival information you receive after booking for the exact timing on your night.

Fondue with children and teenagers

Children aged 6 and over are recommended by Iglu-Dorf for the overnight stay. A bubbling pot is a warm, social way to start the evening, and most children enjoy dipping bread. For fussy eaters, request the pasta (Gstaad, Zermatt) or the vegetable stew (Davos) when booking. Fondue is rich, so a walk afterwards, which is part of the programme, is a good idea. Teenagers get a lot out of the combination of dinner, hot tub and a night walk with headlamps.

Fondue versus a restaurant meal in town

You could eat a fondue in any Swiss resort town, and that would be cheaper and warmer. What the igloo adds is the setting: snow walls, ice art, a heated kota, then a hot tub under the mountain sky and a night in snow. If dinner is what you want, stay in town. If the whole evening is what you want, the igloo fondue is the highlight of a package, not a stand-alone meal. Remember that Friday and Saturday nights are excluded from our code, and that in practice the code nights are in practice Sunday and Thursday nights (Gstaad also Monday).

How to book your igloo night with HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5

There are no special links or tracking cookies in this partnership. The code typed at checkout is the only thing that gives you the 5% and registers the booking as ours, so it is the one step not to skip. We are Iglu-Dorf’s affiliate partner and earn a small commission when you book with our code; it costs you nothing extra.

  1. Pick your village and igloo. Open Iglu-Dorf5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 or the quick-booking page on iglu-dorf.com and choose the village and the igloo type.
  2. Add your guests first (adults 16+, teenagers 10–15, children up to 9). The date calendar only appears after that. Choose a Sunday-to-Thursday night between 4 January and 4 April 2027 — in practice Sunday and Thursday nights (Gstaad also Monday) — the live calendar on iglu-dorf.com shows exactly which nights are open.
  3. Fill in guest details and extras: single sleeping bags instead of a double (free), a dog (CHF 25), a vegetarian or pasta dinner alternative, a surprise cake or a rose in ice.
  4. Find the “Promo-Code” box (“Do you want to redeem a promo code?”), type HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 and press Add. Check that the total drops by 5% before you confirm. The “Voucher” box above it is for gift vouchers, not for our code.
  5. Confirm and pay. You can cancel free of charge up to 60 days before the night; after that Iglu-Dorf charges 10% (59–30 days), 50% (29–7 days) and 100% (under 7 days or no-show), with refunds preferably as vouchers. Discounts are not cumulative.

For the Family & Friends Igloo in Zermatt, which Iglu-Dorf currently takes by enquiry only, write to info@iglu-dorf.com or call +41 41 612 27 28 and put the code in your message.

Who should skip it

An igloo night is not for everyone, and we would rather say so now. It is not a good fit for children under about 6 (Iglu-Dorf recommends the stay from age 6 and offers no changing tables, highchairs or childcare), for anyone who needs a private bathroom in the night (the toilets are shared and dry; the “Plus” igloo with a private toilet is not part of our code), for people who cannot walk in snow with a backpack, or for light sleepers who dislike sleeping at about 0 °C. Wheelchairs and limited mobility are not supported either. And if you can only travel on a Friday or Saturday, the code does not apply to those nights.
