Fishing Bocas del Toro: Hand-Line Catch and Sea-to-Table Stays

If fresh fish and a bit of time on the water matter to you, Bocas del Toro is a good place to be, and an eco lodge on Isla Bastimentos is a good way to do it. Here is what fishing and sea-to-table food look like at Casa Cayuco, and what they are not.

We are family travellers from Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland, where fishing is a way of life, so this topic matters to us. We have not stayed at Casa Cayuco yet, and everything about the lodge below comes from its own published information. We cover what is listed and say clearly what is not.

Short answer

For fishing in Bocas del Toro from an eco lodge, the simplest answer is Casa Cayuco4% off · HungryTravelPanama on Isla Bastimentos: local fishermen bring in fresh hand-line fish by cayuco to the dock every evening, and fishing with the lodge’s guides is among the excursions you can arrange on arrival. It is a lodge with guides, not a sport-fishing charter operation. Book with our link and the code HungryTravelPanama gives you 4% off.

Fishing in Bocas del Toro: what to expect

Bocas del Toro is an archipelago on Panama’s Caribbean coast, and fishing there is mostly local and small-scale. Casa Cayuco sits on the secluded beach of Punta Vieja at the southeast tip of Isla Bastimentos, about 30–35 minutes by speedboat from Bocas Town through the protected mangroves of the Bastimentos National Marine Park.

There are really two ways to enjoy fish at an eco lodge like this. The first is at the table: the daily catch, brought in by local fishermen. The second is on the water: a fishing outing with the lodge’s guides. We would not frame either as a fishing holiday in the competitive, record-fish sense. The lodge’s own description of its adventures lists hand-line fishing alongside birding, kayaking, paddle boarding, yoga and massage, which tells you the tone.

If you are the sort of traveller who plans around a single activity, this is worth knowing before you book: a stay here is built around the setting first. The reef, the mangroves, the Zapatillas Islands 10 minutes away by boat and a jungle trail from the door all compete for your time, and many guests will fit one fishing outing among several other things.

The evening catch: fish delivered by cayuco

Here is the part we love. According to Casa Cayuco, the cuisine is predominantly plant-based, plus fresh fish caught by local fishermen with hand lines and brought to the dock by cayuco every evening. A cayuco is the traditional dugout canoe carved from a single tree trunk, and we have a short guide to what a cayuco is and why the lodge carries the name.

What this means for a guest:

  • The fish comes from local fishermen and reaches the dock in the evening, so the menu follows what the sea gives that day.
  • Fish is not the only thing: coconuts come from the property, coconut oil from Salt Creek, cacao from the village, and the chocolate from Green Acres Chocolate Farm.
  • If you are vegetarian, vegan or allergic, the kitchen accommodates diets. It uses nuts and gluten, but recipes can be adapted, so tell the lodge in advance.

It is also worth knowing that the kitchen makes much of what you eat in-house, including coconut milk, nut butters and juices, and that a hot sauce called ají chombo is on the table at every meal. Afternoon snack might be chips and fresh salsa, and the bakery turns out banana bread and sorbet. None of that is fish, but together it is a big part of the picture of how the lodge feeds you.

We would not promise a particular fish on a particular night; that depends on what the fishermen bring.

Dinner on the dock

Meals are taken at communal tables for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the afternoon snack is brought to wherever you are. There is a large table on the dock for dinners under the stars, and the lodge says sting rays glide past while you eat. For a special occasion, a private meal on your porch or at the end of the dock can be arranged on request.

Dinner is a three-course meal, and all meals are included in the stay. Drinks are extra: there is a full bar with wines from Argentina and Chile and Panamanian beers, and no outside alcohol is allowed.

Fishing trips with the lodge's guides

Fishing (hand-line) is listed among the lodge’s adventures. Like every guided excursion, it is planned at check-in with the in-house guides, and there is no need to book in advance. The lodge shows a photo of a good catch on a fishing trip with its guides, and that is as far as we will go: we have no verified details on the boat, the equipment, the duration, the target species or the price, so we will not guess.

This is what a fishing trip at Casa Cayuco is and is not, as we read the lodge’s information:

  • It is: a guided outing with the lodge’s guides, arranged on arrival, that fits the rest of a nature-led stay.
  • It is not: a sport-fishing charter operation with its own gear specifications, tournaments or trophy-fish guarantees.

Ask the guides at check-in what is possible on your dates, what is included in the price and what you need to bring. Excursion prices that are listed, as on casacayuco.com in November 2026, may change and a 7% tax applies to excursions; the price for fishing is not listed, so ask.

Useful questions for the guides, in rough order: Who goes out and how many people fit? What time do you leave and how long are you out? Is anything provided, or should we bring our own? What happens to the fish we catch, and can the kitchen cook it? Is the price per person? Weather and sea conditions will decide whether it is a good day, and the lodge notes that the biggest surf swell runs from November to April while the calmest sea is generally August to October.

Lionfish spearing: a different kind of fishing

The more unusual option is lionfish spearing, a 2-hour excursion with a professional local guide. Lionfish are invasive in the Caribbean, so removing them is generally seen as helpful for reefs. The lodge does not list a price for it, so ask on arrival.

Spearing is a skilled activity and a guide-led one, and you should follow the guide’s instructions. Ask about age limits on this one, since the lodge accepts guests from 5 upwards and we have no information on the minimum age for spearing, and ask whether swimming ability is required. If you are comfortable in the water and curious about conservation, it is a memorable half-morning. For more detail, read our guide to lionfish spearing and fishing in Bocas del Toro.

Is hand-line fishing sustainable?

We want to be careful. Hand-line fishing is generally considered a low-impact method, because each fish is caught individually and unwanted catch can often be released, compared with some larger-scale methods. But sustainability depends on the species, the numbers, the season and local rules, and we cannot verify the details of the catch brought to Casa Cayuco. If this matters to you, ask the lodge which species it serves and how it chooses them.

What the lodge does say about its approach: it buys from local fishermen, uses solar power and rainwater harvesting, composts and recycles, and employs 28 people from Salt Creek. Buying fish from local fishermen also keeps money in the community, which is one reason we like the model.

As a guest you can help in simple ways: eat what is served rather than demanding a particular fish, ask the guides before you keep or release anything, and bring reef-safe sunscreen. The lodge suggests reef-safe sunscreen and natural insect repellent on its packing list.

Beyond fishing: what else the days hold

If your group includes people who do not fish, there is plenty else. Sea kayaks, paddle boards and snorkel gear are included. The included Salt Creek village tour runs 2 hours. Paid excursions include Zapatillas Islands ($80), Mangrove Snorkeling ($85) and Sloth Creek ($40), as listed in November 2026 and subject to change.

The Zapatillas Islands are about 10 minutes away by boat. A jungle trail starts right at the lodge. Guests must be 5 or older, and the minimum stay is 3 nights. Most guests fly from Panama City to Bocas del Toro in about 50 minutes and take the lodge’s included daily boat from Bocas Town, so build the fishing day into your plans only once you know your arrival and departure times, and be flexible if the sea is rough or the guides suggest another day.
