Bocas del Toro is an archipelago, and some of its best parts lie inside the Bastimentos National Marine Park — the protected waters and islands around Isla Bastimentos. Staying close to the park changes the trip: your boat rides are short, your snorkel spots are quiet and your mornings start at the edge of the reef rather than in a taxi queue. We are family travellers from Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland, where national parks are part of daily life, so this is the kind of base we look for. The lodge facts below come from Casa Cayuco’s own pages; the general geography is at a high level and hedged, and we have not stayed there yet.

Short answer

The best place to stay for the Bastimentos National Marine Park is a lodge on Isla Bastimentos itself, and Casa Cayuco sits on the southeast tip of the island. The lodge’s boat from Bocas Town runs through the park’s protected mangrove islands, the Zapatillas Islands are about ten minutes away, and mangrove snorkelling is 25 minutes from the dock. What the Bastimentos National Marine Park is

The Bastimentos National Marine Park is the protected area that wraps around much of Isla Bastimentos, the large, largely rainforest-covered island east of Isla Colón. We keep our description of it general, because we are a travel family, not a park authority: expect mangrove-fringed islands, coral reef, turquoise shallow water and rainforest running down to the shore. For the official rules, fees and boundaries, check with the park or the lodge before you go.

What we can say from the lodge’s own descriptions is how it feels to be inside it. Casa Cayuco says its scheduled boat from Bocas Town takes about 30–35 minutes through the protected mangrove islands of the marine park. The Zapatillas Islands — two uninhabited islands with white beaches and guided snorkelling — are in the park too, and so is the area for mangrove snorkelling.

Why your base matters: Bocas Town vs a lodge on Bastimentos

Staying in Bocas Town on Isla Colón is cheap and convenient — the shops, the airport and the restaurants are all there — but every park excursion starts with a boat trip across open water. Staying on Bastimentos puts you at the edge of the park. Compare how it works:

Casa Cayuco: the lodge at the edge of the park

Casa Cayuco Eco-Adventure Lodge sits on the secluded beach of Punta Vieja, on the southeast tip of Isla Bastimentos, between jungle and sea. A jungle trail starts at the lodge. Salt Creek, a Ngäbe-Buglé village, is five minutes away by boat. In Tripadvisor’s 2026 Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best Awards, the lodge was named the #1 Family-Friendly Hotel in the World.

It runs on solar power, with rainwater harvesting and purification for the whole property, composting and recycling, low-flow showerheads and organic bath products — useful credentials if you want your stay to be gentle on the park around you. All meals, the boat transfer from Bocas Town and the use of kayaks, SUP boards and snorkel gear are included.

What you can do inside the park from the lodge

  • Isla Zapatillas, half day ($80 per person): two uninhabited islands, beaches and guided snorkelling.
  • Mangrove Snorkeling, half day ($85): soft corals, sponges, octopus and starfish, 25 minutes from the dock; look out for dolphins.
  • Sloth Creek, 1 hour ($40): a boat ride through mangrove channels looking for sloths.
  • Surfing, half day ($75): less-known breaks in the marine park; not a surf school, for strong swimmers and confident surfers only, two-person minimum.
  • Nidori Beach, full day ($135): an hour by boat to Ensenada village on Punta Valiente, with a short hike and a beach, with a three-person minimum.
  • Free with your stay: kayaks, SUP boards, snorkel gear and a two-hour Salt Creek village tour.

Prices are as listed by the lodge in November 2026 and may change. There is no need to book in advance; everything is planned on arrival with the in-house guides.

Practical tips for visiting a marine park

  • Use reef-safe sunscreen; chemical sunscreens harm coral.
  • Do not touch or stand on coral, and do not feed wildlife.
  • Bring natural insect repellent, a headlamp and water shoes.
  • Respect the villages: Salt Creek is a Ngäbe-Buglé community of about 900 people, and the lodge employs 28 people from it.
  • Bring school or medical supplies for Salt Creek through Pack for a Purpose if you can.
  • Take only photos from the dock and trails; the guides will tell you what is safe to approach.
