Engagement Photoshoot in Lapland: After the Yes, or as the Cover Story for the Proposal
Engagement photos in Rovaniemi can be a keepsake after the yes, or the quiet cover for the proposal itself. Here is how our two-hour surprise photoshoot works, what is included, how the light changes through the year, what to wear and how long it takes.

An engagement photoshoot in Lapland can follow the yes or be the cover for the proposal. Our Surprise Proposal Photoshoot starts from €1,050: two hours in nature, such as Ounasvaara or Vaattunkiköngäs, with the setting styled in advance, a bouquet of 30 roses, sneak-peek images within 24 hours and at least 80 edited images three weeks later. It runs year-round. Compare all of our Proposals in Lapland, or Right Where You Are from €650 if you want something simpler.

The Short Version: Engagement Photos Can Be the Proposal
There are two ways couples end up with engagement photos in Lapland. Some say yes first and then want pictures that match the moment. Others want the pictures to be the moment: one partner quietly arranges a “photoshoot”, and the proposal happens in the middle of it. That second route is what we call the cover story, and it is exactly what our Surprise Proposal Photoshoot is built for. It starts from €1,050, lasts two hours, and is year-round.
Rovaniemi Weddings is our own company — Joona and Alla, based in Rovaniemi — so we are describing our own product here, and we will be straight about where something else would suit you better. Our page for all of our Proposals in Lapland sits behind every price you will read below.
What "Engagement Photos in Lapland" Can Mean
It helps to separate the options before choosing, because they are quite different jobs.
- The cover story. You tell your partner you have booked a couple shoot in a beautiful place. We prepare the proposal setting beforehand, and the walk turns into the question. They never see it coming, because shoots like this are normal on a trip.
- After the yes. You propose yourselves, or with one of our other settings, then take couple photos straight afterwards. Several of our proposals include a photographer for exactly this reason.
- A shoot later in the trip. If you have already got engaged at home, a shoot in Lapland is a way to celebrate and have pictures from the place you visited together.
All three work; the cover story is the one where preparation matters most, because it has to look ordinary until the very end.
Our honest view: if the photographs matter to you as much as the question, the photoshoot is the better fit than a setting alone, because the photographer is part of the plan from the start rather than an add-on. If the setting matters more, one of our other proposals may suit better, and you can add a photographer to any of them.
It also suits travellers who are only in Rovaniemi for a few days. Nothing needs to be arranged on the ground apart from turning up at the agreed time, and because the location is chosen together with us, you do not have to scout anything in an unfamiliar town.
What Is in the Surprise Proposal Photoshoot
The shoot begins as a walk in one of Rovaniemi’s most beautiful places — Ounasvaara hill, or Vaattunkiköngäs with its bridge and river — where the proposal setting is already waiting. It lasts two hours, and the date and time are agreed so the light is at its best. Optionally, we drive on to a second location, such as the Möötikkärakka viewpoint or a private reindeer farm (the farm charges separately).

Everything below is included in the from-price:
- Organisation, planning and coordination of the proposal
- Two hours of photography with our photographer
- Styling of the proposal location, with delivery, set-up and removal
- Candles, lanterns, decorative elements and floral styling
- A fresh bouquet of 30 roses and a complimentary sparkling drink
- All travel fees within Rovaniemi
- 10–20 edited sneak-peek images within 24 hours
- 2–3 short videos for social media
- All edited images (at least 80) in a personal web gallery three weeks after the shoot
Add-ons are a national park such as Riisitunturi for an additional fee, more elaborate décor or a bigger bouquet, and a videographer.
Light by Season: When Do the Photos Look Best?
Because the shoot is year-round, the question is less “when can we” than “what do we want the photos to feel like”. These are general observations from living here, not guarantees.

| Season | What the light does | What it looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Summer | Very long days; low sun for hours in the evening | Warm, golden, green forest and river |
| Autumn (ruska) | Softer sun, the colours of September | Gold and red forest, calm water |
| Winter | Short days; low sun and twilight | Snow, blue hour, candles and lanterns shine |
| Spring | Light returns quickly | Bright snow, long afternoons |
In winter we plan for the short window of daylight, so the timing of your shoot matters more than the date. In summer there is far more flexibility. If you hope to see the northern lights, they are possible from late August to April, but they cannot be promised on a given night, and our Yes Under the Aurora proposal (from €1,500) is the one designed around them. Our post on planning the wedding year after a Lapland proposal shows what to think about next.

What to Wear
Clothing decides whether the photos look relaxed or cold, so it is worth a short plan. In winter the answer is warm layers you can keep under a stylish coat: thermal base layers, insulated boots, a hat and gloves. Pick one outer layer that photographs well, a plain coat in a colour you like, and avoid very thin shoes. A scarf or fur-trimmed hood is useful for a pop of texture. Wear what you are comfortable in, because you will be outside for a while.
In summer a light jacket, comfortable walking shoes and a little insect repellent are the sensible additions. In spring and autumn dress in layers and bring something waterproof. For a winter-specific packing list, our hour-by-hour guide to what to bring in Rovaniemi is a good companion.
A small tip for the surprise version: tell your partner it is a “photoshoot” so they dress up a little. That is the best insurance for photos in which they feel good, and it makes the cover story honest, because the photos are real.
How Long Does It Take, and Where Does It Fit in the Trip?
The shoot is two hours, plus travel to the first spot. If you add the optional second location, allow a bit longer. We suggest placing it on day two or three of a three- or four-day stay: you have arrived, recovered from the journey, and know the weather. Keep the evening after it free for a celebration dinner. Rovaniemi’s airport is about ten minutes from town, so there is little waste of travel time.

If you are weighing it up against other proposals, here is how we see it:
| Option | From | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Right Where You Are | €650 | A styled setting at your own cabin or hotel |
| Surprise Proposal Photoshoot | €1,050 | A natural cover story and a full gallery |
| The Fireside Proposal | €1,400 | A fire, a laavu and a quiet moment |
| Yes Under the Aurora | €1,500 | The northern lights season |
Prices are from-prices and always include our planning, coordination, set-up and removal.
Keeping the Secret on the Trip
The part people worry about most is the secret. We communicate only with you, on the channel you choose, and we never contact your partner, friends or the venue unless you ask. Everything is prepared before you arrive and packed down after you leave. On the day we set up while you are on your way, step out of sight, and wait for the moment.

If your partner is the suspicious type, our post on planning a Lapland proposal when your partner suspects has useful ideas, and the one about travelling to Rovaniemi with an engagement ring covers the practical side of getting the ring there. A photoshoot is a good cover precisely because it needs no explanation.
How to Plan It With Us
Our process for proposals is four steps, and we do the hard part quietly.
- Weeks before — tell us the story. How you met, what matters to them, how you want it to feel; we suggest the fitting option or shape a custom one.
- Within a few days — option and quote. A clear quote with nothing hidden, your date held, and the exact location and timing fine-tuned together.
- The days before — quiet preparation. Flowers, candles, photographer, transport, sparkling wine and the weather plan all confirmed.
- The hour — the moment. We set up while you are on your way; you walk them in, the yes happens, we capture it, then quietly pack down.
We reply within one business day, and the earlier you get in touch the better. Send us the story through Contact Rovaniemi Weddings, or browse the Wedding & Proposal Venues in Lapland if you want a particular setting.
FAQ
How much is the Surprise Proposal Photoshoot?
It starts from €1,050 and includes two hours of photography, the styled proposal setting, a bouquet of 30 roses, a sparkling drink, travel within Rovaniemi, and a gallery of at least 80 edited images. Add-ons such as a videographer or bigger décor cost extra.
How long does the shoot take?
Two hours. An optional second location, such as the Möötikkärakka viewpoint or a private reindeer farm, can be added; the farm charges separately.
Can we do it in winter and in summer?
Yes, it is available year-round. In winter we plan around the shorter daylight; in summer the light is much more flexible. We agree the date and time so the light is at its best.
Will we receive photos quickly?
You get 10–20 edited sneak-peek images within 24 hours, 2–3 short videos for social media, and all edited images, at least 80, in a personal web gallery three weeks after the shoot.
How do you keep it secret from my partner?
We communicate only with you, never with your partner, friends or the venue unless you ask. The setting is prepared in advance, and the shoot works as a natural cover story.
Can we add a national park or a different location?
Yes. Riisitunturi or another national park can be added for an additional fee, and other places can be chosen together with us. Tell us what you have in mind and we will quote it.
Our Honest Final Word
The Surprise Proposal Photoshoot is our favourite answer for people who want a natural-looking cover story and a proper set of photos afterwards. It is not the cheapest way to propose, and it is not the most dramatic. If you are already booked into a cabin and want something simpler, Right Where You Are is better value, and for the northern lights season Yes Under the Aurora is the one we would choose. If your plan is only photos, you may not need a planned proposal at all.
Whichever you pick, tell us the story and your date through our proposals page and we will send one clear quote within a business day. Then your only job is to keep a straight face on the walk.
