Monkey Island Bocas del Toro: Capuchin Rescue and Where to Stay
A two-hour visit to the Monkey Island Foundation is one of the most memorable excursions you can plan from Casa Cayuco. Here is what it is, how to see capuchins responsibly and why we would base the trip at a treetop cabaña.

This guide is built from our own family travels and from Casa Cayuco’s own pages and booking terms — what is included, how to get there and what each room is like come straight from the lodge, never invented.

What Monkey Island actually is
Monkey Island is not a zoo. According to Casa Cayuco’s excursion list, it is a two-hour visit to the Monkey Island Foundation, a capuchin rehabilitation project, and the visit is led by the foundation’s founder, Francine. The excursion costs $70 per person, as listed on the lodge’s site in November 2026; prices can change, so confirm with the lodge.

We keep this section deliberately short, because we have not made the trip ourselves yet and will not describe what we have not seen. What we can tell you is what the lodge publishes and why we would book it: a guided visit run by the person behind the project is a very different thing from a quick photo stop.
Why we like the idea of a rehabilitation visit
Children usually love monkeys, and a foundation focused on rehabilitation gives that excitement some context. A guided visit with the founder is the sort of experience where kids can ask questions and adults learn why wild animals do not belong in homes. That is the angle we would take with our own family from Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland, where our wildlife is reindeer and not monkeys, so everything here feels new to us.
Check the lodge’s guides for the current format and what to expect on the day, because we do not want to promise specifics such as feeding, touching or close encounters that the lodge does not describe.
How to see wildlife responsibly
These are general good-practice rules for wildlife anywhere in Panama, not Casa Cayuco policies, and the foundation and your guide will give the final word on the day:
- Follow the guide’s instructions and keep to the paths and routes they use.
- Do not feed wild animals or offer snacks. Human food harms them and changes their behaviour.
- Keep your distance, stay calm and speak quietly, especially around young animals.
- Do not chase or touch animals for a photo, and switch off flash.
- Ask your guide before picking anything up or leaving the group.
- Take your rubbish with you.
Good wildlife viewing is mostly patience. The best moments we hope for are quiet ones, not staged ones.
Pair it with other wildlife excursions
Casa Cayuco’s guides plan excursions at check-in, so you can build a wildlife-focused day around the weather. The nearby options on the lodge’s list include Sloth Creek, a 1-hour boat ride through mangrove channels looking for sloths ($40), the Casa Cayuco Sendero jungle loop (2 hours, $25), which the lodge says may show poison dart frogs, sloths, monkeys and birds, and the Caiman Trail from Salt Creek (2 hours, $35). We have a separate guide to where to see sloths in Bocas del Toro if sloths are your main goal.

Wildlife you can see without leaving the lodge
You do not need an excursion to share space with animals. The lodge lists geckos, golden silk orb-weaver spiders, bats (the lodge’s resident bug catchers), poison dart frogs and small caimans among its critters, and a jungle trail starts right at the property. A local guide can take you birding too. Bring a headlamp and trail shoes, and natural insect repellent for dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes and chitras are around. The lodge says its bug nets are tightly woven, and every bed has a mosquito net, so nights are comfortable even in an open-air room.

For families, this is a gentle way to introduce children to wildlife: short, guided and close to the room. Children must be at least 5 to stay, and we would talk through the rules above before the first walk so everyone knows what to expect.

Why base yourself in the Mono Panoramic Treetop Cabaña
Mono Panoramic Treetop Cabaña4% off · HungryTravelPanama is Casa Cayuco’s most private accommodation, set in the jungle 40 feet up in the canopy. It sleeps 6, with a king bed on the screened-in second level and up to four twin beds on the open-air first floor, plus a large covered porch above the rainforest. It is the room we would book for older kids who want to feel like they live in the trees.

Who it is for: families with older children, friends travelling together and anyone who dreams of a treehouse stay. Who it is not for: anyone who wants air-conditioning (only the Estrella De Mar villa has it) or who is uneasy with stairs and open-air living. The staircase photo below gives you a sense of the climb.

Getting from Bocas Town to the lodge
Most guests fly from Panama City (Albrook) to Bocas del Toro in about 50 minutes with Air Panama. The recommended Flight 980 arrives around 2:00 pm, and the lodge’s captain meets you at the airport with a sign for the 2:00 pm pickup, then the speedboat takes 30 to 35 minutes through the protected mangrove islands of the national marine park. The transfer is included in your stay, round trip. Our full guide is how to get to Bocas del Toro and Casa Cayuco.
A sample wildlife-focused stay
Because every excursion is planned at check-in, treat this as an idea rather than a schedule. With four nights, we would use the first morning for the free Salt Creek village tour and the lodge’s own jungle trail, day two for Monkey Island, day three for Sloth Creek and a slow afternoon on the beach, and day four for kayaking or snorkelling with the free gear. Ask your guides about the best time of day for each outing, as they know the area.
Leave at least one day empty. Some of our best travel memories as a family come from unplanned hours, and the lodge has hammocks, a guest library, SUP boards and a calm beach for exactly that.
Planning your Monkey Island day
At check-in, tell the in-house guides what you want to see and they will plan the days around conditions. Calm seas run August to October; the driest months are February to April and August to October. Rain often falls at night and clears by late morning, so do not cancel an outing over a daily forecast that always shows thunderstorms. The minimum stay is 3 nights, which leaves time for two or three excursions.
Bring a headlamp, trail or water shoes, a light rain jacket, natural insect repellent and reef-safe sunscreen. Pack for a Purpose is also welcome at the lodge: you can bring school or medical supplies for the Salt Creek community. Our full list is in what to pack for a Bocas del Toro eco lodge.

- Check the promo box. The code HungryTravelPanama is pre-filled; if you do not see it, type it in before you search dates. It gives 4% off your stay.

- Pay the 50% deposit to confirm. Cancelling more than 60 days before check-in refunds the deposit minus a $100 admin fee; closer to arrival the deposit is partly or fully forfeited, so the lodge recommends travel insurance.

FAQ
How much is the Monkey Island tour at Casa Cayuco?
The lodge lists Monkey Island at $70 per person for about 2 hours, as of November 2026. Prices may change, and a 7% tax applies to excursions, so confirm the current figure with the lodge at check-in, when the guides plan every excursion with you.
What is the Monkey Island Foundation?
According to the lodge, it is a capuchin rehabilitation project, and the visit is led by its founder, Francine. For more detail on the foundation’s work, ask the lodge’s guides when you plan the trip. We have not visited yet, so we prefer to send you to the source.
Do I need to book Monkey Island in advance?
No. Casa Cayuco says activities are planned on arrival with the in-house guides, so you decide at check-in based on the weather and your interests. Tell them early if it is a priority, because they plan around weather and sea conditions on the day.
Is Monkey Island suitable for kids?
Children from 5 years old can stay at the lodge, and many kids love monkeys. Ask the guides about the format and any age or safety considerations before you book the excursion, and let them know your children’s ages so they can advise.
Can I touch or feed the monkeys?
Follow the foundation’s and your guide’s instructions. As a general rule, wild animals should not be fed or handled, and we would not promise any close contact that the lodge has not described. Keeping a respectful distance is better for the animals and usually gives better photos.
Which room is best for wildlife lovers?
We would choose the Mono treetop cabaña for its canopy setting and porch above the rainforest. It sleeps up to 6, and rates are shown live through our booking link, where you can also compare the other family rooms and see which dates are open.
Our Honest Final Word
If wildlife is on your list, we would plan Monkey Island and Sloth Creek early in the stay, leave a day free for the lodge’s own trail and book the Mono treetop cabaña if you have older children or friends along. We have not been yet, so everything here comes from the lodge’s published details, and we chose to partner with it because its excursions are guided, local and planned around you.
