What a friends trip needs from a stay

Groups tend to want the same few things: enough beds without forcing couples to share, somewhere to hang out together, food that suits different diets, and things to do that are not all the same. Casa Cayuco covers many of these by design. It sits on the secluded Punta Vieja beach at the southeast tip of Isla Bastimentos, about 30–35 minutes by speedboat from Bocas Town, so you are not choosing between restaurants every night.

The flip side is that it is remote and quiet. If your idea of a friends trip is bars until late, Bocas Town is a boat ride away, not a stroll.

Estrella De Mar: one villa for up to eight

Estrella De Mar Tropical Beachfront Villa4% off · HungryTravelPanama is a two-storey seafront villa with three bedrooms, each with an en-suite bathroom and a sea-view balcony. It sleeps up to 8, with three king beds and up to two twin beds. The bedrooms are air-conditioned, the only air-conditioned accommodation at Casa Cayuco, and downstairs you get a living room, a well-equipped kitchen, a dining room and outdoor lounge space, with the services of the full-service lodge.

It suits two or three couples, or a group of friends who want to share one space and still have a private bathroom each. We would pick it for any group that includes someone who sleeps badly in the heat.

Mixing bungalows for groups of four to six

If you do not need a villa, mix beachfront units. Cangrejo Beachfront Cabaña4% off · HungryTravelPanama is a new two-bedroom cabaña for four, with two king beds, one of which converts into two XL twin beds, ready for stays from 15 December 2026. Rates are not published on the lodge’s site, so check live prices through our link and divide by the number of guests. Hotel tax (10%), tips of 12–15% of the stay, drinks and excursions are extra, so agree in advance how you split the bar tab. Our guide to what is included and what costs extra helps.

Eating together and group activities

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served at communal tables, so you will mix with other guests, and there is a large table on the dock for dinners under the stars. Dinner is three courses, mostly plant-based with fresh local fish, and the kitchen can adapt to allergies and diets. A private meal on the porch or end of the dock can be arranged on request.

Kayaks, SUP boards, snorkel gear and yoga mats are free. Groups also get surf boards, boogie boards and floating chairs, according to the lodge. Excursions are extra: Isla Zapatillas ($80), mangrove snorkelling ($85) and the chocolate farm ($70), all per person, planned at check-in.

Bigger groups and celebrations

If your friends trip grows past eight, the lodge hosts yoga retreats, milestone celebrations, writers’ escapes, wedding parties and more. Groups of 20 or more get discounted per-person rates by custom quote, and a group of 30 or more can reserve the whole lodge, which holds a maximum of 53 guests. Contact the lodge directly for these quotes; we cannot give prices.

For birthdays, a dock dinner is a lovely idea. New Year’s Eve has a dock dinner with a champagne toast and fireworks at an extra per-person charge.

A sample four-night plan for a group

Day one is travel: everyone lands on the same flight, meets the captain at the 2:00 pm pickup and settles in at 3:00 pm. Dinner is the first chance to sit together at the communal tables. Day two is the included Salt Creek village tour in the morning, then free kayaks, SUP boards and snorkel gear in the afternoon.

Day three is the big excursion. Isla Zapatillas is a half-day with beaches and guided snorkelling, and the Botanical Chocolate Farm tour is another half-day. Confident surfers can ask about the surf trip, which has a 2-person minimum and is not a surf school. Day four can be yoga, massage and a long dock dinner, with departure around 12:30 pm the next morning.

Because everything is planned at check-in, you can split into smaller groups: some of you on the water, others on the trail, all meeting again for dinner.

Group etiquette that keeps friendships intact

A few habits help. Agree the budget before you book, because rooms, tax, tips and drinks add up. Decide who pays the deposit, since 50% is due to confirm and the cancellation terms are strict. Assign bedrooms honestly, giving the best bed to whoever travelled furthest or sleeps worst.

  • Pick one person to handle booking and share the confirmation with everyone.
  • Buy travel insurance individually; the lodge strongly recommends it.
  • Keep the pace flexible: not every excursion needs the full group.
  • Respect quiet hours, since the rooms are open-air and sound travels.

The lodge is smoke-free and does not allow outside alcohol, so plan to use the bar. Wine comes from Argentina and Chile, and Panamanian beers are on the menu, according to the lodge.

Finally, think about who snores, who rises at dawn and who wants early nights. The villa gives each bedroom a door and air conditioning, while bungalows are open-air and share sound with their surroundings. Matching sleep habits to rooms matters more than matching friends to friends, and it is worth a frank chat before anyone pays a deposit.

If your group includes a vegetarian, a vegan or someone with an allergy, tell the lodge when booking. The cuisine is predominantly plant-based, so many diets are easy, but the kitchen uses nuts and gluten and adapts recipes on request.

Getting everyone there on the same day

The simplest plan is for the whole group to fly Panama City (Albrook) to Bocas on the same Air Panama flight, so you meet the 2:00 pm boat pickup together. Other pickup times are private transfers for a fee, and early pickups are not available. If someone arrives a day early, our getting-there guide explains the alternatives, including the overnight bus.

Plan at least 3 nights; most groups will enjoy four or five. Check-in is 3:00 pm and check-out 12:30 pm.

FAQ

What is the best place to stay for a friends trip in Panama?

For a group of up to eight in Bocas del Toro, we would choose the Estrella De Mar villa at Casa Cayuco. It has three en-suite air-conditioned bedrooms, a kitchen and living areas. For four to six, bungalow mixes also work well.

How many people does the villa sleep?

Estrella De Mar sleeps up to 8, with three king beds and up to two twin beds. Each of the three bedrooms has its own bathroom and a sea-view balcony, so couples and friends can share comfortably. Each bedroom has its own bathroom, which is a big plus for groups of friends who do not usually share.

Is there air conditioning for the group?

Only the villa’s bedrooms are air-conditioned. Cangrejo, Delfín, Tortuga and Mono are open-air with high-powered fans and mosquito nets, so decide whether everyone is comfortable with that before booking. The villa also has a living room, kitchen and dining room, so the group is not squeezed into bedrooms.

Can we reserve the whole lodge?

A group of 30 or more can reserve the whole lodge, which has a maximum of 53 guests. Groups of 20 or more get discounted per-person rates. Both are custom quotes, so contact the lodge. Contact the lodge for a quote and availability, especially for dates around holidays.

Do we cook for ourselves in the villa?

The villa has a kitchen, but all meals are included in your stay and served by the lodge’s kitchen, with communal tables and a dock table for dinners. You do not need to cook. Meals are still communal-table dining unless you ask for a private dinner for a special occasion.

Can everyone split bills separately?

The lodge takes payment on site by cash, bank transfer or card, and the 50% deposit is paid at booking. Ask the lodge how it handles split payments, and agree on drinks and tips within your group. Whoever pays should agree the split before booking so nobody is surprised by the taxes and drinks later.
