Best Room for Couples in Bocas del Toro: Pelicano, Loro or Starfish?
Three rooms at Casa Cayuco suit two people, and they could hardly feel more different: a thatched beachfront bungalow, a suite high in the canopy and a brand-new bungalow opening in December. Here is how we would choose between them.

We plan couples’ trips as carefully as family ones, because the right room changes everything. This comparison is built from Casa Cayuco’s own room pages and booking terms; we have not stayed there yet.

Why couples choose a lodge over a Bocas Town hotel
Bocas Town is lively, which is exactly why many couples skip it. Casa Cayuco sits on the secluded beach of Punta Vieja at the southeast tip of Isla Bastimentos, about 30–35 minutes by speedboat from town, with a calm swimmable beach in front and rainforest behind. The lodge hosts a maximum of 53 guests, dinner is a 3-course affair at communal tables or on the dock, and you can ask for a private meal on your porch or at the end of the dock for a special occasion.

Everything is open-air by design: en-suite open-air bathroom, a high-powered ceiling fan, a mosquito net, a memory foam mattress and high-speed wifi. That is romantic if you like falling asleep to the jungle, and worth knowing if you need air conditioning (only the villa has it, and it is built for groups).
Pelicano Beachfront Bungalow: the classic honeymoon pick
Pelicano Beachfront Bungalow4% off · HungryTravelPanama is a one-queen-bed beachfront bungalow under a thatched roof, sleeping two. It is the room most often photographed at the lodge and the one we would book for an anniversary or honeymoon where the sea is the point: you are steps from the beach, and the open-air sink looks into the jungle.

Who it suits: couples who want a proper bungalow feel, being near the water and the dock. Who it does not: anyone who wants the biggest bed or a second room, or who needs air-conditioning.
Loro Lodge Suite: high in the canopy
Loro Lodge Suite4% off · HungryTravelPanama is a lodge suite on the main lodge’s third floor, with a queen bed, an open-air shower area and a view over the jungle canopy. It is a different kind of romance: you wake up level with the treetops and the lodge’s shared spaces are just downstairs.

Who it suits: couples who like views, birds and a bit of height. Who it does not: if stairs are a concern, remember it is on the third floor of the lodge, so check with the lodge about access before booking.
Starfish Beachfront Bungalow: new for 2026–27
Starfish Beachfront Bungalow4% off · HungryTravelPanama is one of two brand-new beachfront units, ready for stays from 15 December 2026 with a one-bedroom layout, a king bed and a spot on the beach. The photos on this page and on the lodge’s site are design renderings, so treat them as a guide to the layout rather than a final look. A new guest lounge is being completed at the same time.

Who it suits: couples who want to be among the first guests in a new bungalow, or who prefer a king bed. Who it does not: anyone who needs finished-photo certainty before booking — look at the renderings, then ask the lodge anything you want confirmed.
Pelicano vs Loro vs Starfish at a glance
| Room | Bed | Feel | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pelicano | 1 queen | Thatched beachfront bungalow | Honeymoons, beach lovers |
| Loro | 1 queen | Canopy suite, third floor of the lodge | Views, birdwatchers |
| Starfish | 1 king | New beachfront bungalow (from 15 Dec 2026) | Newest build, king bed |
All three are open-air with fans, nets and en-suite open-air bathrooms. Nightly rates are not published on the lodge’s site, so check live rates through our link rather than trusting any figure you see elsewhere.
Romantic extras at Casa Cayuco
All meals are included, with a mostly plant-based menu and fresh fish brought to the dock by cayuco each evening. A private dinner on your porch or the end of the dock is available on request. Kayaks, SUP boards, snorkel gear and yoga mats are free to use, a massage therapist works in-house (book at check-in), and the Salt Creek village tour is included. The Zapatillas islands are ten minutes by boat, and the half-day trip costs $80 per person on top of your stay.

When to go as a couple
The sea is calmest for swimming and snorkelling from August to October, the driest months are February to April plus August to October, and the biggest surf swell runs November to April. Rain mostly falls at night and clears by late morning. For New Year, the lodge serves a dock dinner with a champagne toast and fireworks at an extra per-person charge.

What is included and what costs extra
Couples often ask what the room price covers. Every stay at Casa Cayuco includes the scheduled speedboat transfer from Bocas Town, all meals (chef’s choice breakfast, lunch, a three-course dinner and an afternoon snack), locally grown coffee and tea each morning, daily housekeeping, 24/7 staff, the Salt Creek village tour and the use of kayaks, SUP boards, snorkel gear and yoga mats.
Extra: guided excursions, drinks, staff gratuities (the lodge suggests 12–15% of the stay), a 10% hotel tax on room charges and a 7% tax on excursions and drinks. Room rates are not published on the lodge’s site, so we never quote a nightly figure; open our link for live prices. You can read more in our guide to what is included and what is extra.
Getting there and timing your stay
Most guests fly from Panama City’s Albrook airport to Bocas del Toro in about 50 minutes with Air Panama. The lodge recommends flight 980 (arriving around 2:00 pm) and flight 981 back (leaving around 2:30 pm), because they match its daily boat: a 2:00 pm pickup at Bocas airport and a return from the lodge around 12:30 pm. Other times are possible as a paid private transfer, and early pick-ups are not available. Our full getting-there guide covers the overland options too.
Because the minimum stay is three nights and check-out is at 12:30 pm, most couples and families plan four or five nights. See our guide on how many nights to book.
What to pack and what to expect
Pack reef-safe sunscreen, natural insect repellent (mosquitoes and chitras come out at dusk and dawn), a headlamp or flashlight, trail or water shoes and a light rain jacket. Power is on 24/7 from solar panels with US-style 110 V outlets, though guests are asked not to use hair dryers. Panama uses US dollars, and payment on site can be cash, bank transfer or card; bring a little cash for crafts in Salt Creek. Geckos, bats and the odd spider are part of an open-air stay, and the nets are tightly woven. Our packing list has the full rundown.
