Costa Rica to Bocas del Toro: Flight or Shuttle to Casa Cayuco
Combining Costa Rica with Panama’s Caribbean coast is one of the most natural trips in Central America. Here are the two ways Casa Cayuco lists for getting from Costa Rica to Bocas del Toro, how to connect with the lodge’s daily boat, and how long to stay.

Many travellers who plan Costa Rica look at a map and notice how close Bocas del Toro is. The archipelago sits near the Costa Rican border, and the lodge’s own getting-there page lists two ways to link them. We have summarised it here, with the caveat that schedules, prices and border rules change: confirm everything with the airline, the shuttle company and the lodge before you book. We have not made this trip ourselves. If you are building a longer Panama trip, our general getting-there guide covers the rest.
From Costa Rica to Bocas del Toro you can either fly Sansa from San José (currently Tuesdays and Thursdays, about 50 minutes) or go overland with the Caribe Shuttle, then take Casa Cayuco’s included boat from Bocas Town. The lodge’s scheduled boat leaves Bocas Town at 3 pm daily. Book through our link and keep HungryTravelPanama in the promo box for 4% off.

Option 1: fly Sansa from San José
According to Casa Cayuco, Sansa flies between San José and Bocas del Toro (BOC) on Tuesdays and Thursdays, taking about 50 minutes. Check the current schedule, because flight days change by season. Arriving in Bocas, you take a short taxi or walk to the lodge’s pickup point and board the scheduled speedboat. The boat leaves Bocas Town at 3:00 pm, and the captain meets guests at the airport at 2:00 pm for the recommended Air Panama arrival; if your flight lands at a different time, ask the lodge about the transfer, because other times mean a private transfer for a fee.

Option 2: overland with the Caribe Shuttle
The lodge also lists the Caribe Shuttle, an overland route from Costa Rica to Bocas del Toro. It is cheaper than a flight and takes longer, usually with a border crossing and a final water taxi to Bocas Town. Check the timetable and border formalities with the operator, and allow time for delays. Because the lodge’s boat is a single daily departure, overland guests should aim to reach Bocas Town by early afternoon; if you will be late, ask the lodge about a private transfer before you set off.
What to do in Bocas Town while you wait
The lodge suggests Bibi’s on the Beach (a $1-per-person water taxi) or La Buga on the water for a bite while you wait for the boat. Luggage can be stored at the bookkeeper’s office in Bocas Town (Oficina Virginia Vasquez), a 10-minute walk from the airport or a $2-per-person taxi. The boat’s departure point is the lodge’s dock in Bocas Town.
How long to stay at the lodge
The minimum is three nights and we would book four or five if you are travelling from Costa Rica, because the journey is long enough that a one-night stop feels wasted. Four nights lets you do the Zapatillas half day, a snorkelling morning, a chocolate farm visit and still leave room to sit still. For planning, see our how many nights guide.

Practical points for crossing borders
Panama uses US dollars, so you do not need to exchange currency if you carry dollars, and the lodge accepts cash, bank transfer or credit card on site. Check passport and entry requirements for your nationality on official government sites, as we cannot give legal advice. Pack light, because boat trips and small planes have luggage limits. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, natural insect repellent, a flashlight and trail shoes. Our budgeting guide explains taxes and tips.
