Wifi, Remote Work and Digital Detox: A Remote Panama Eco Lodge
Do you really have to disconnect on a jungle island? Casa Cayuco lists high-speed wifi in every room — and also gives you every reason not to use it. Here is how to choose between a working trip and a proper switch-off.

Two kinds of traveller ask us about wifi at remote lodges. The first needs to stay reachable for work, school or an elderly parent. The second wants to be completely offline and is quietly worried that the lodge will not let them. Casa Cayuco’s answer suits both: its accommodation list includes high-speed wifi in every unit, so connectivity exists if you want it, and the setting is so full of things to do that most guests may not. We have not stayed yet, so we cannot test the speed; below is what the lodge publishes, plus our advice on how to set your own rules.
Casa Cayuco in Bocas del Toro, Panama, lists high-speed wifi in every accommodation, so a light remote-work week is possible — but it is a lodge, not a coworking space. Power is solar and available 24/7. If you want a digital detox, the dock, kayaks and jungle trail make switching off easy. What the lodge says about connectivity and power
Casa Cayuco lists high-speed wifi among the features of every cabin and suite, alongside the ceiling fan, mosquito net and memory foam mattress. Electricity is on 24/7, supplied by solar panels with propane backup, and outlets are US-style Type A at 110 V. The lodge says the solar system is robust with no outages. It asks guests not to use hair dryers, which is a clue to how carefully the power is managed.

What the lodge does not publish is a speed in megabits, so we will not invent one. If you must run video calls, ask the lodge before booking and test your most important call on arrival. A realistic plan for a remote worker is a few focused hours of emails and messages, not eight hours of meetings.
A workable day for a remote worker
The lodge’s rhythm helps. Coffee and tea arrive in the morning; breakfast is chef’s choice; lunch and a three-course dinner follow, with an afternoon snack brought to wherever you are. That means you can work in the quiet before breakfast, take a long midday break for kayaking or snorkelling, and finish an hour of emails on the porch. The main lodge has seating areas and a guest library, and the lodge’s photos show lounge sofas on the deck and a living room on the water.

The boat leaves the lodge for Bocas Town at around 12:30 pm and returns at 3 pm, so plan deadlines around the boat times on arrival and departure days.
Which room is best for working
None of the rooms has a desk listed, so you will use porches and lounges. We would pick Loro Lodge Suite4% off · HungryTravelPanama for a solo remote worker or a couple: it is elevated on the third floor of the main lodge with canopy and sea views, close to the common areas. For a longer stay with a small team, the Estrella De Mar Tropical Beachfront Villa4% off · HungryTravelPanama has a living room, dining room and kitchen, so one person can work indoors in air-conditioned bedrooms while others go out. A screened-in room such as Rana Lodge Suite4% off · HungryTravelPanama is useful if insects distract you at dusk. See our solo travel guide.

If you want a proper digital detox
You can leave the phone in the room and still be busy. Kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, snorkel gear and yoga mats are included, and a jungle trail starts at the lodge. Guided excursions — Isla Zapatillas ($80), Sloth Creek ($40), mangrove snorkelling ($85) and more, priced per person as listed in November 2026 — are planned at check-in. Evenings are communal dinners and, on clear nights, stars over the dock. Hammocks hang on the porches and at the end of the dock. The lodge has a guest library and an in-house massage therapist you can book at check-in.

Our trick for family trips: agree a single ‘phone hour’ a day on the dock, and leave the rest offline. With children aged five and above, it is surprising how quickly the screens are forgotten.

Connectivity beyond the lodge
For travel days, you will need data in Panama City and Bocas Town; local SIM and roaming options change often, so check before you go. In the mangrove channels and on the excursions you should expect patchy coverage. Download maps, boarding passes and the lodge’s pre-arrival form before you leave Bocas Town. Our getting-there guide explains the flights and the boat.
Work-and-play comparison: lodge vs Bocas Town
| Question | Bocas Town | Casa Cayuco |
|---|---|---|
| Wifi | Cafés and hotels vary | High-speed wifi listed in every unit |
| Power | Grid | Solar, 24/7 |
| Distractions | Bars, shops | Dock, kayaks, trails |
| Meals | Pay each time | All included |
| Minimum stay | Flexible | 3 nights |
We would not choose the lodge for a week of back-to-back meetings; we would choose it for a working-holiday week with a few focused hours a day.
Who should not choose it for remote work
If your job needs guaranteed bandwidth or video calls every day, a city hotel is safer. If you cannot be away from a hair dryer, desk and air conditioning, the villa helps with one of those, but the lodge is still open-air. And if you cannot be offline during daylight, the daily boat timetable may frustrate you.
