Texas is not the first state most Europeans think of for an RV trip, and that is part of the appeal. The roads are wide, the campgrounds are friendly and you can drive from wildflower fields to wine country, honky-tonk music towns and one of the least-visited big national parks in the country, Big Bend. Dallas–Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) is a major hub, which makes it an easy place to start.
We write this as a researched guide, not a report from our own Texas RV. Our road-trip experience is in the Nordics, and we say so because we think it matters. Prices and facts below come from the CampervanPlanet Dallas page as we saw it in early November 2026.
Our our campervan rental guide explains hiring basics worldwide, which is useful if you are new to renting an RV.
The Dallas page showed the cheapest 7-night RV from $102 a day for 10 November 2026, $97 for 9 March 2027 and $136 for 8 June 2027, with pick-up near DFW. Spring (March to May) is the best season, summer is hot, and Big Bend is a long, remote drive. Code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY20 takes €20 off your booking at checkout.
Picking up near DFW
The page offers pick-up near Dallas–Fort Worth International Airport. That suits international arrivals, since you can collect your RV soon after landing. The Dallas area is a sprawl of highways, so allow time on the first day, avoid rush hour and take a calm route to your first campground.
America drives on the right, and Texas has an excellent road network. RVs are big, though, and wind on open plains can push a tall vehicle around. Take it easy on the first day while you get used to the size.
Four Texas routes
The page describes the Dallas starting point as a gateway to the Texas Hill Country wineries, Big Bend National Park, San Antonio and Austin. A simple route is Dallas to Austin, about 300 km, then on to the Hill Country around Fredericksburg and Johnson City, with wineries, peach stands and German-heritage towns.
From there, San Antonio is a short drive, with the Alamo and the River Walk. If you have more time, drive west toward Big Bend, a remote national park on the Rio Grande, but be aware that it is a long way: from Dallas, expect more than a full day of driving each way. Many people fly or drive to San Antonio first and treat Big Bend as a separate leg.
A shorter version loops Dallas, Austin, Fredericksburg and back. A week is enough, and ten days gives time for San Antonio.

What does it cost?
The “from” prices on the Dallas page were $102 a day for a 7-night start on 10 November 2026, $97 for 9 March 2027 and $136 for 8 June 2027, all for the cheapest campervan from the Dallas depot. Larger motorhomes cost more, and the final price depends on dates, vehicle and extras.
For context, the page cites USA-wide figures of about $104 a day in winter and $168 in summer, from $36, across 36 vehicles from seven companies. Those are national averages, and Texas depots may differ.
Typical extras in the USA include mileage beyond an included allowance, a generator, kitchen kits and bedding, a one-way fee and campground fees. Fuel is a major cost in a big RV. We explain how to build a budget in our real cost of a Nordic road trip, and the structure works for any country.

When to go
The page names spring, March to May, as the best season for an RV trip from Dallas, with mild temperatures, bluebonnet wildflowers and comfortable camping weather. Fall, from October, is also pleasant. Summer is hot, often above 35°C, with thunderstorms. Winter is mild but can bring cold snaps and the odd ice storm.
For Big Bend, the cooler months are best, because summer heat in the desert is intense. Check the weather and park alerts before you go.
Campgrounds and camping
Texas has many state parks with campgrounds, which you can reserve online, and private RV parks with full hook-ups. Popular parks in the Hill Country fill on weekends and in wildflower season, so book ahead. National park campgrounds at Big Bend are also popular in winter and spring.
Free camping on public land is limited in much of Texas, which has a lot of private land. Always check rules. Many Walmart and casino car parks have their own policies, so ask before you stay. For a full day on the road, a campground with power and water is a comfortable choice.
Driving an RV in Texas
Texas highways are fast and well maintained, with speed limits that can reach 75 mph (about 120 km/h) in some places, but RVs should drive more slowly. Watch fuel gauges in the west, where services can be 100 km or more apart. Storms can produce heavy rain and hail in spring, so check forecasts.
Wildlife such as deer can be a hazard at dawn and dusk. If you are not used to a big vehicle, practise reversing in an empty car park. We use the same cautious approach when we drive in remote regions in Iceland.
