Nelson Campervan Hire: Abel Tasman, Marlborough Sounds and the West Coast

New Zealand road in the South Island

Everyone planning a New Zealand road trip looks at Queenstown and Christchurch first. Nelson campervan hire is the quieter, sunnier alternative at the top of the South Island, and it is a smart choice if you arrive by the Cook Strait ferry or want Abel Tasman and the wine country without the Queenstown crowds.

We are Joona & Alla, and we write this as a researched guide rather than a diary: we have not driven New Zealand ourselves, but we have studied the CampervanPlanet Nelson page and the New Zealand price index closely. It is Christmas season in the southern summer, so the key question is how early to book and how to use the cheaper shoulder months.

Short Answer

The CampervanPlanet Nelson page shows campervans from about €59 a day in peak summer (December to February), €45 in autumn, €49 in spring and €20 in winter. Pick up at Nelson Airport, in the city or in Motueka. The page recommends booking Nelson Airport pick-ups three to six months ahead for peak season.

Why start in Nelson?

The page describes Nelson as the sunniest city in New Zealand, with up to 2,500 hours of sunshine a year, and as the perfect launchpad for Abel Tasman, Marlborough wine country and the West Coast glaciers. It is a compact airport, 15 minutes from the city centre, with depots in town within walking distance of Trafalgar Street, and further pick-up points in Motueka, Picton, Blenheim and Takaka.

It is also the natural place to start if you come across on the Interislander ferry to Picton, which is around 1.5 hours east. Compare it with the busier hubs in our guides to Queenstown campervan hire and Christchurch campervan hire.

What Nelson campervan hire costs

The Nelson page lists the season, temperature and a “from” price per day, as seen in late October 2026.

  • December to February (summer, peak): 20 to 30 °C, crowds and premium rates, from about €59 a day.
  • March to May (autumn): crisp clear days and golden light, the sweet spot for Abel Tasman, from about €45 a day.
  • June to August (winter): milder than most of New Zealand, main roads open, the lowest rates of the year, from about €20 a day.
  • September to November (spring): lambing season, wildflowers and quiet campsites, from about €49 a day.

Those are the cheapest “from” figures for each season, not what a typical van costs. The New Zealand-wide index in late October showed a typical NZ$161 a day in winter and NZ$400 in summer, from NZ$40, across 107 vehicles and 22 companies. Our look at New Zealand campervan hire costs this summer goes into the Christmas peak in more detail.

Route 1: The Abel Tasman coastal loop

Nelson’s signature trip is three to five days and about 250 km, easy and fine in a standard 2WD campervan. Drive west through apple orchards to Motueka, then the golden sands of Kaiteriteri and Marahau, the southern gateway to Abel Tasman National Park. Kayak the coast, hike a section of the Coastal Track, then loop over Takaka Hill into Golden Bay before returning to Nelson. The page suggests November and April as the best months, with DOC sites and holiday parks for camping.

It is a perfect first trip in a campervan: short drives, good campsites and the option to leave the vehicle for a day on the water. In December and January, book the campsite and any kayak or water-taxi well ahead.

Route 2: Marlborough Sounds and wine country

The second route is four to six days and about 300 km. Drive from Nelson to Picton along the Queen Charlotte Drive, continue south to Blenheim, the heart of the Sauvignon Blanc country, then return through the Rai Valley. Cycle the vineyards, take a mail boat in the Marlborough Sounds and enjoy a very different landscape from the golden-sand coast. The page says October and April are best, with harvest in February and April, and camping at parks in Blenheim and Havelock.

If you plan to combine this with a ferry crossing, our guide to Wellington campervan hire and the Cook Strait ferry explains how it works for a campervan.

💡 Our campervan tip: prices for the same van vary a lot between rental brands. We compare Nelson and the top of the South Island campervans across 160+ rental companies on CampervanPlanet — and code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY20 takes €20 off your booking.

Route 3 and 4: Nelson Lakes, Golden Bay and the glaciers

If you have a week, the inland-meets-coast route runs five to seven days and about 450 km: south to Nelson Lakes National Park and the mirror-still Lake Rotoiti, then over Takaka Hill into Golden Bay for Te Waikoropupū Springs, Wharariki Beach and Farewell Spit. For ten days, the West Coast route covers about 900 km via Murchison and Lewis Pass to Punakaiki’s Pancake Rocks, Greymouth and Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers, returning via Haast Pass and Wanaka or Arthur’s Pass.

The page flags a practical note for the longer trip: fuel up in Murchison. Distances on the West Coast are long and petrol stations are sparse, so treat the tank as a planning tool, not an afterthought. See also our South Island campervan itinerary.

When to book and how to save

The page is blunt about peak: crowds and premium rates in December to February, and Nelson Airport pick-ups should be booked three to six months ahead. If you are reading this in early November and want to travel this summer, check availability immediately; if not, consider the cheaper autumn weeks from March, or next spring.

The best way to save is to compare brands for the same dates. We search many rental companies on CampervanPlanet, and our code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY20 takes €20 off at checkout. Also look at one-way options if you plan to end in Christchurch or Queenstown, and read our guide to our campervan rental guide for insurance and deposit tips.

Freedom camping and the practical bits

New Zealand has strict rules for where self-contained vehicles can stay, and local councils differ. Check the current rules for each region, use DOC sites and holiday parks, and make sure your vehicle has the certification the area requires. Fines for illegal camping are real, and we would not rely on a blog post for the details. Carry a paper map or offline map, because mobile coverage drops in the national parks.

Drive on the left, give yourself extra time on winding roads, and remember that a campervan is slower than a car on hills.

Our verdict on Nelson campervan hire

Nelson is relaxed, sunny and easy to drive, and it works whether you want three days or three weeks. Take the Abel Tasman loop in autumn for the best value, Marlborough for wine and harvest, and the West Coast loop if you have the time. Book early for the Christmas peak, compare brands, and use the coupon to take €20 off.
