The Path to Yes: A Surprise Proposal Walk in a Lapland National Park, With a Guide Who Is Really a Photographer

Your partner thinks it is a guided day in Riisitunturi National Park or the Korouma canyon. The guide is a professional photographer, the trail leads to a spot we have prepared, and at the end there are 30 roses and a campfire snack. This is how our Path to Yes proposal works, who it suits and how to fit it into a trip to Rovaniemi.

Short answer

The Path to Yes is a surprise proposal walk in a Lapland national park: your partner believes it is a guided day out, but the guide is a professional photographer who leads you along a trail in Riisitunturi National Park or the Korouma canyon to a spot we have chosen with you. It starts from €1,500 and includes all transport, the photographer, a bouquet of 30 roses, sparkling wine and a snack by the campfire. It works in every season, from winter crown snow to midnight sun and September colours. It is run by our own company, Rovaniemi Weddings; compare it with the other nine Proposals in Lapland if you are choosing.

What The Path to Yes Is

Most proposals are planned around a place. This one is planned around a walk. Your partner is told you have booked a guided day in one of Lapland’s most beautiful national parks. A guide meets you, leads you along a trail, tells you a few stories, and takes photographs of the two of you along the way, which seems entirely natural on a trip like this.

The guide is a professional photographer, and the trail ends at a spot we have chosen with you, where the moment is waiting. After the yes there are couple photographs and a snack by the campfire, so the day carries on as a celebration.

We run Rovaniemi Weddings, which is our own company; Alla founded it after planning her own wedding in 2024. We designed this proposal for couples who do not want to be seen, who prefer a landscape to a venue, and who would feel awkward about an audience. It is the proposal with the fewest props and the most nature, and it is one we would pick ourselves.

How the Day Unfolds

A typical Path to Yes day goes like this, adjusted to your season, your pace and the light:

Our Fireside Proposal: a different option with the same campfire warmth that waits at the end of the Path to Yes.

  1. The setup. Weeks before, you tell us the story and choose the park, the date and the spot. In the days before, we prepare the location and agree timing with you.
  2. The pick-up. All transport on the day is included, so there is nothing for you to arrange. Your partner thinks it is a guided outing.
  3. The walk. The “guide” leads the way, taking photographs of the two of you as part of the day. The pace is gentle, and the trail is chosen to match your fitness.
  4. The spot. The trail ends at the place we have prepared, with the bouquet and, if you add it, décor. You ask the question. The photographer captures the moment from a distance and then comes closer for couple photographs.
  5. The campfire. A snack by the fire, sparkling wine, and time to take in what has just happened before the drive back.

The day is a drive away from Rovaniemi, so plan for a good part of a day rather than an hour; we confirm the timing for your date when we hold it.

Riisitunturi or Korouma: Choosing the Landscape

We usually propose two places and let the story, the season and your partner’s fitness decide.

Riisitunturi National Park. A fell landscape famous in winter for trees heavy with snow, so thick that they look like sculptures. In summer it is quiet forest and open fell, and in September the autumn colours make it one of the loveliest places we know.

The Korouma canyon. A deep, wild canyon that feels like a secret. It suits couples who like the idea of a place most visitors never see, and it is beautiful in every season.

Another beautiful place in Lapland can be chosen together if you have one in mind. The decision is simple: choose Riisitunturi for the classic Lapland winter picture and Korouma for drama and quiet.

Season by Season

SeasonWhat the walk is likeWhat to know
Winter (Dec–Mar)Snow-crowned trees, soft blue light, a crackling campfireDress for −10 to −25 °C; the day is shorter, so we plan around the light
Spring (Apr–May)Long, bright days, melting snowTrails can be wet; waterproof boots
Summer (Jun–Aug)Green forest, midnight sun, soft light late in the eveningMosquito repellent; the light lasts for hours
Autumn (Sep–Oct)Autumn colours, quiet trails, the first aurorasLayers; the weather can change quickly

The proposal works in all four, and that flexibility is one of its strengths. If you are visiting in winter, ask us about adding an evening aurora tour, or compare it with our Yes Under the Aurora proposal, which is the night-time version of the same idea: a guide who is really a photographer.

Who It Suits, and Who Should Choose Something Else

The Path to Yes suits couples who enjoy being outdoors, who like the idea of a day with a story, and who want photographs that look like a trip rather than a set. It is a good choice for couples who would not want an audience, and for those who want to be somewhere that feels remote.

It is less suited to anyone who finds walking hard, who is very sensitive to cold in deep winter, or who has only an afternoon free. If any of those apply, tell us and we will shape the route, or suggest a shorter alternative such as On the Frozen Lake or a styled setting at your accommodation. We would rather change the plan than spoil the surprise by asking your partner to walk further than they enjoy.

Keeping the Surprise: What Your Partner Needs to Be Told

The cover story is already built into the proposal: a guided day out. A few practical things make it stronger:

  • Book the day as a tour. Tell your partner you have booked “a guided national park day”, which is believable and normal.
  • Let the guide do the photographs. The photographer is expected to take pictures, so camera shutters are not suspicious.
  • Dress your partner well. Winter boots, thermal layers, a warm hat and gloves. In summer, a light rain jacket and good shoes.
  • Keep the ring close. An inside pocket, in a pouch, not a suitcase.

We communicate only with you, on the channel you choose, and we never contact your partner. Our guide to keeping a Lapland proposal secret for the whole trip covers the rest.

What to Pack for the Walk

A national park day is a hiking day, so ask your partner to dress as if they were going on one, and add a few things yourself. In winter: thermal base layers, a warm jacket, insulated boots, a hat, gloves and a spare pair of socks. In summer: sturdy shoes, a light rain jacket, repellent and a water bottle. In autumn: layers you can add and remove. For you: the ring in a pouch in an inside pocket, a thin pair of gloves so you can handle it in the cold, and a small hand warmer for the moment you kneel. A phone with a full battery is useful for the drive back, and the photographer will handle everything else. If you are bringing a cap or scarf in a colour that stands out against snow or green forest, the photographs will thank you. And one thing worth saying aloud: no one has ever regretted a pair of warm socks.

If you would like the spot to feel decorated rather than simply wild, ask us about a small set-up of candles or flowers, which suits an open fell landscape well and is easy to remove afterwards. We leave no trace of it in the park.

Fitting It Into a Trip to Rovaniemi

Because the walk takes much of a day, we suggest placing it in the middle of the trip, not on arrival day or the last morning. Pair it with a quiet evening, or, in aurora season, with a late-night lights tour so the day ends with the sky. If you are only in Rovaniemi for three nights, a shorter alternative may fit better, and our guide to a complete proposal in Rovaniemi compares them.

You can add a bigger bouquet, décor at the spot, or a videographer. Décor set up at the proposal spot is the add-on we recommend most for this proposal, because the trail ends in an open landscape and a small, beautiful detail makes it feel intentional.

How to Plan It With Us

  1. Tell us the story. Weeks before is best. Use the Contact Rovaniemi Weddings page with your dates and ideas.
  2. Option and quote. Within a few days, a clear quote and a held date, with the park and the timing fine-tuned together.
  3. Quiet preparation. Transport, photographer, flowers and the weather plan are confirmed.
  4. The moment. We prepare the spot, the guide walks you there, the yes happens, and we capture it.

We reply within one business day.

FAQ

Is the photographer really your guide?

Yes. The photographer plays the role of your guide for the day, which explains the camera and keeps the surprise. Photographs of the moment and couple photos right after the yes are included.

How much does The Path to Yes cost?

From €1,500. That includes planning, all transport, the photographer-guide, a bouquet of 30 roses, sparkling wine and a snack by the campfire. Décor at the spot, a bigger bouquet and a videographer can be added.

Which parks do you use?

Riisitunturi National Park or the Korouma canyon, or another beautiful place in Lapland chosen together.

Does it work in summer?

Yes. It is beautiful in every season: crown snow and blue light in winter, midnight sun in summer and autumn colours in September.

How long does the day take?

Plan on a good part of a day, because the parks are a drive from Rovaniemi. We confirm the timing for your date when we plan it.

What if the weather is bad?

In winter there is no rain in Lapland, and falling snow makes the moment more romantic. We can bring clear umbrellas, and if needed we agree a sheltered alternative in advance.

Our Honest Final Word

The Path to Yes asks a little more of you than most of our proposals: a longer day, a walk and some trust in a guide your partner has never met. In return it gives you something none of the staged settings can, which is a real landscape and the sense of having arrived somewhere together. We are biased, because this is our own business, and it is also the one we would choose if we were being asked.
