Portugal is one of the great motorhome countries of Europe: a mild climate, a long coast, good roads and a culture that is relaxed about travellers. Most guides send you south to the Algarve, and we have written about that too. This time we look north, where Porto, the Douro Valley and the Minho make a compact and rewarding loop.
We are writing as researchers rather than as people who have driven these roads in a rental van, since our own road-trip experience is in Finland and the Nordics. The facts come from the CampervanPlanet Portugal page, updated in November 2026, and from stable local knowledge about the region. If you are new to renting a campervan, start with our campervan rental guide.
Summer 2027 is still some way off, but the northern loop is also lovely in spring and autumn, so there is plenty to plan.
Pick up at Porto Airport, which the CampervanPlanet page calls the best base for the Douro Valley and the Minho. Portugal campervans start from about €68 a day, with a peak-summer price of around €170 a day. Late May and September are the sweet spots. Our reader code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY20 takes €20 off at checkout.
Why start in Porto
The CampervanPlanet Portugal page lists four pick-up points: Lisbon Airport, Porto Airport, Faro Airport and the Algarve. Lisbon is the busiest hub, Faro serves the south, and Porto Airport is described as the base for the north, with the Douro Valley and the Minho on its doorstep.
Starting in Porto means you can drive away from the airport and be in vineyards or on the coast within an hour. It also suits a one-way trip: you could start in Porto and finish in Lisbon, passing through the centre of the country, although you should check the one-way fee when you search. For the southern half, see our Lisbon campervan guide and the Algarve winter sun article.
When to go: the seasonal picture
The page gives a clear season guide for Portugal:
- June to August (peak): 28–35°C inland, hot and dry, and busy on the Algarve. The cooler Atlantic west coast, such as Costa Vicentina and Ericeira, is the sweet spot in high summer. The peak price on the page is about €170 a day.
- May and September (shoulder): 20–27°C, with a warm sea, golden light and far fewer crowds. September is the Douro grape harvest, which makes it special for the vineyard region.
- Rest of the year: milder but wetter in the north, and a few campsites reduce their opening times.
For the Douro, we would choose September if you want the harvest atmosphere, or May for green hills and cooler driving. In mid-summer the valley is very hot, and the heat in a motorhome without air conditioning can be tiring.
What it costs: the live numbers
Portugal campervans start from about €68 a day on the page, and it also quotes a budget figure of around €88 a day for the cheaper end of the market. The peak-summer price is about €170 a day. The price index shows 2 rental companies for Portugal in the November data, which is a small selection, so availability matters even more than in bigger markets.
That means that a week in peak summer can cost roughly €1,200, against well under €700 for a budget van in a quieter month, before extras. Check the details on the CampervanPlanet Portugal page for your own dates, and remember to compare the insurance excess and the mileage rules.
💡 Our campervan tip: prices for the same van vary a lot between rental brands. We compare Portugal campervans across 160+ rental companies on CampervanPlanet — and code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY20 takes €20 off your booking.
A northern loop: ten days from Porto
Here is a loop we would plan for ten days. The distances are short, so you can spend more time in each place:
- Porto. Spend a day on foot: the riverfront, the old town and the port lodges across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia. Use a campsite on the edge of town and public transport rather than driving into the centre.
- The Douro Valley. Follow the river east through terraced vineyards towards Peso da Régua and Pinhão. The roads are winding, so give yourself time and avoid tight village streets.
- Guimarães and Braga. Two historic cities in the Minho region, close together and easy to combine.
- Peneda-Gerês National Park. Mountains, waterfalls and wild horses, in the north of the country on the Spanish border.
- Viana do Castelo and the Minho coast. Beaches, estuaries and a relaxed finish.
- Aveiro on the way back. Canals and colourful boats, an easy stop before Porto.
The roads in the north are generally good, but small roads are narrow and steep, so check the length and height of your motorhome before you set off.

Parking, camping and service areas
Portugal has a good network of campsites and “áreas de serviço” for motorhomes, with water and waste disposal. Wild camping is restricted in many places, especially in natural parks and along the coast, and fines can apply. Look for signs, use official sites and avoid parking in places that are marked for day use only.
In towns, many car parks have height barriers, and some old towns ban large vehicles. Park on the edge and walk or take a taxi. In summer, popular beach areas fill up early, so arrive in the morning or book a campsite.
Motorways in Portugal have tolls, some of them electronic. Ask your rental company how the toll transponder works, as the arrangement differs between companies, and check the cost for a motorhome class.
What to look for in a van
For two people, a compact campervan is enough and much easier on narrow roads. Families will want a four-berth motorhome, but remember its size in the Douro villages. Check that the heater works, because evenings in the hills can be cool outside summer, and ask about air conditioning for the hot months.
Also compare mileage packages, because a ten-day loop from Porto can be only 800 to 1,000 km, and an unlimited package is not always necessary. Look at the bond and what reducing it costs per day, and read the conditions on unpaved roads and ferries.
