Chicago RV Rental: Route 66, Door County and the Great Lakes in 2027

Most people searching for Chicago RV rental have one of two trips in mind: the Mother Road, Route 66, which begins here, or a lake-and-peninsula summer through Wisconsin and Michigan. Both are easier than the big western national-park loops, shorter, and a very good first RV trip in the United States.

We are Joona & Alla, and we write this as researchers rather than as people who have driven these roads ourselves. We read the CampervanPlanet Chicago page, the USA price index and the local rules, so you can plan 2027 with real numbers. Summer is peak, and the best Midwest RVs are gone early, so planning in November is not too soon.

Short Answer

The CampervanPlanet Chicago page lists O’Hare (ORD) pick-up and shows campervans from about $85 a day. Across the USA the price index shows a typical $104 a day in winter and $168 in summer. Route 66 to St. Louis, Door County and Indiana Dunes are all short, easy trips from Chicago. Book summer 2027 early.

Picking up an RV in Chicago

The Chicago landing page names O’Hare (ORD) as the pick-up depot for this page, and describes Chicago as a Midwest hub, the start of Route 66 and the gateway to the Great Lakes. CampervanPlanet’s search covers around 35 US depots, from Los Angeles and Las Vegas to Minneapolis, Nashville and Boston, so one-way trips out of Chicago are possible to price. Our look at one-way RV rental in the USA explains the extra fee and the routes that tend to work.

Fly into O’Hare, collect the RV and be on the road quickly. The page notes that downtown is a drive away depending on traffic, so avoid collecting at rush hour if you can help it.

What an RV costs from Chicago

The Chicago page quotes campervans from $85 a day, and says compact campervans start at around $85 to $115 a day in the shoulder season, while Class C motorhomes run roughly $130 to $210 a day. It also warns that peak summer, late June to August, commands a premium. The USA-wide index, updated in late October 2026, shows a typical RV price of $104 a day in winter and $168 in summer, from $36 at the very cheapest, across 36 vehicles and 7 companies.

In practice a ten-day summer trip in a Class C motorhome can easily cost $1,500 to $2,500 before fuel, campsites, insurance extras and mileage. Our guide to USA RV rental costs per day and week breaks the extras down in more detail.

Route 66 from Chicago to St. Louis

The page suggests following the original Route 66 alignment southwest from Chicago to Springfield and St. Louis: about 480 km over four days, best in April or October, in a Class C motorhome. Expect classic small-town America with vintage diners, neon signs and roadside attractions, including Joliet, Pontiac with its Route 66 museum, Springfield with its Lincoln sites and Litchfield, finishing at the Gateway Arch.

It is an easy drive, which makes it a fine first RV trip. If you want the full western stretch afterwards, you can look at a one-way hire towards California, and our guide to Los Angeles RV rental shows what happens at the other end.

Door County, the Cape Cod of the Midwest

The page calls Door County the Cape Cod of the Midwest: five days and about 470 km, easy, best in June and October. Drive north through Milwaukee and Sheboygan to Sturgeon Bay, Fish Creek and Washington Island, with cherry orchards, lighthouses, fish boils and some 480 km of Lake Michigan and Green Bay shoreline. The suggested camping is Peninsula State Park, and the vehicle a two or three-berth campervan.

Campground reservations in popular state parks can fill months ahead in summer, so book the RV and the pitch together. A smaller campervan makes parking in small towns much easier than a big Class C.

Indiana Dunes, Michigan wine country and beyond

The second short route runs east to Indiana Dunes National Park, where sand dunes meet Lake Michigan, then along the lakeshore through St. Joseph and Saugatuck for wineries, galleries and beaches. It is four days and about 380 km, easy, best in May and September. The page also lists a longer run to Sleeping Bear Dunes, five days and about 520 km.

These are the sort of trips where a campervan feels like a luxury rather than an expedition: short days, plenty of towns, and good campgrounds. If you want mountains and canyons instead, the Rockies and Utah are better; see our guides to Denver RV rental and Salt Lake City RV rental.

Booking tips for summer 2027

Peak US RV season runs from late June to August, and the Midwest is no exception. Book the vehicle first, then the campgrounds, then the flights if the dates are flexible. Compare several brands for the same dates on CampervanPlanet, because the same class of vehicle can differ noticeably in price, mileage allowance and generator fees. Our code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY20 takes €20 off at checkout.

Read the mileage allowance carefully: a Route 66 trip is short, but a Chicago to California one-way is not. And check the minimum rental length and driver age rules, which differ by company. Our campervan rental guide has a checklist for the first-time renter.

Our verdict on Chicago RV rental

Chicago is an underrated starting point. The routes are short and gentle, the prices compare well with the western hubs outside the peak weeks, and you get genuine Americana without the long distances. For first-timers, a compact campervan in May, September or October is the sweet spot; for families, a Class C in July is fine if you book early.

Pick your route, compare the vehicles, and use the coupon.
