We looked at each other, then at a spectacular frozen river scene that wasn’t going anywhere, and felt that particular type of traveller’s regret reserved for moments you can’t undo.

That was our introduction to cold weather photography. Since then we’ve shot across Finnish Lapland in deep winter, chased the northern lights in the Faroe Islands in horizontal sleet, and spent a week in Iceland’s highlands in April where the wind chill made every camera swap feel consequential. This guide is what we wish we’d had on day one.

In practice, a battery showing 60% in a warm café can hit 0% within ten minutes outdoors in January Lapland.

  • Always start with a full charge. Cold drains batteries faster even when idle — don’t rely on 80% thinking it will be fine for a short session.
  • Keep spare batteries in an inner chest pocket, against your body. Skin temperature is around 34–36 °C — the perfect battery warmer. We carry a small soft pouch inside our down jackets and rotate batteries every 30–45 minutes.

  • Bag the gear before you go inside. Put your camera into a sealed bag or close your camera bag completely while still outdoors. The bag warms slowly; the gear inside warms even more slowly, preventing the thermal shock that causes fogging.
  • Wait 20–30 minutes before opening the bag indoors. In a warm café or hotel room after a Lapland shoot, leave the bag on the floor and wait. Open too soon and you’ll see condensation forming immediately on every surface.
  • Silica gel packets help. Keep a few inside your camera bag — they absorb moisture during the transition period and are easily recharged in an oven.
  • Never wipe a fogged lens. Wait for it to clear naturally. Wiping while fogged can scratch coatings or smear condensation deeper into gaps around filter rings.

The same logic applies in reverse: if you shoot in a warm environment and step into extreme cold, the warm-damp air trapped around the lens can freeze on the glass. Not as damaging, but annoying — it wipes off easily once you’re back inside.

Beyond the physical challenges, the light in cold Nordic environments is genuinely different — and stunning, once you learn to set your camera to meet it. Here is our quick-reference setup for winter shooting in Lapland and Iceland.

Northern lights shutter speed: 2–6 seconds at f/2.8, ISO 800–3200. Find the minimum exposure that reveals aurora structure without sky-motion blur.

Shooting the midnight sun and winter blue hour in Nordic light

Two of the most dramatic shooting conditions in Nordic travel are also the most misunderstood by first-timers visiting from lower latitudes.

Winter blue hour in Lapland is extraordinary — and it lasts for hours. In December, Rovaniemi gets around three hours of twilight-level light per day. That entire window is essentially continuous blue hour: low, angled, diffused light that turns snow-covered forests into something from a painting. You don’t need the sun above the horizon to shoot great images here.

  • Face south during the brief midday glow for the warmest colour tones.
  • Face east or west during the transition for the longest colour gradients across the sky.
  • Underexpose slightly (−0.3 to −0.7 EV) to preserve blue saturation and avoid blowing out the faint pink horizon.

Midnight sun in summer creates the opposite problem: too much light, often from an uncomfortable angle. The sun circles the horizon rather than rising and setting, which means the golden-hour window you’re used to doesn’t happen in the traditional sense. The workarounds:

  • Shoot around 11 pm – 2 am when the sun is lowest and warmest in colour temperature.

Your photography kit is irrelevant if you’re too cold to operate it. Shooting at −25 °C while trying to change settings on a cold metal camera body is a specific physical challenge — gloves warm enough to survive aren’t dexterous enough to spin a control dial.

  • Photography-specific gloves with removable fingertips (Vallerret, Marmot, or similar). The insulated outer flap folds back to expose your fingertips for settings adjustment, then covers back up immediately. This is non-negotiable for serious cold-weather shooting.
  • Hand warmers in the outer glove pocket — not touching the battery directly, but keeping your fingers functional between shots.
