Tromsø Old Town and Storgata Walk: A City-Centre Half Day That Ends With the Northern Lights

Tromsø city centre is small enough to walk in an afternoon, and that is exactly how we would use it: a slow half day around the old town and Storgata, a warm early dinner, then the evening tour. Here is the route and the timing that makes it work.

Why the City Centre Fits Half a Day

Tromsø sits on an island, and its centre is compact: the harbour, the old wooden houses, the main shopping street and several museums are within a ten-minute walk of one another. Many visitors try to fit too much in, or see nothing but the lights. A half day on foot gives you the character of the town without wearing you out before the evening.

We recommend it for the day of arrival or the day after a late northern-lights tour, when you want something gentle. It also works in cloudy weather, which in the Arctic winter is a real consideration.

The Route: Old Town to Storgata

Start at the harbour front near Prostneset and Clarion Hotel The Edge, where the tours pick up. From there, walk uphill into the old wooden houses of the town centre, then along Storgata, Tromsø’s main pedestrian street, which has shops, cafes and several restaurants. Wander into the side streets to see the old timber buildings that survived from earlier centuries.

If you want a bit of history, the e-bike tour description mentions Skansen, the fort area, as one of the sights on the island. We would walk to the cathedral and the harbour, then return along the waterfront. Opening hours change with the season, so check locally before you set out.

A Simple Timetable

  • 11:00 coffee near the harbour, a first walk around the waterfront.
  • 12:00 Storgata and the old town; browse shops, find a bakery.
  • 13:30 a longer lunch or museum stop out of the cold.
  • 15:00 back to the hotel to rest and charge your phone.
  • 16:30 an early dinner; the tour includes a warm meal, so keep it light.
  • 18:30 pickup for the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5.

It is deliberately relaxed. The tour runs 5 to 8 hours, so conserving energy matters more than seeing everything in the centre.

What to Wear for a City Walk in Winter

City walking in the Arctic winter is colder than it looks. Pavements can be icy, and a breeze off the harbour cuts through thin layers. Wear insulated waterproof boots with good grip, a wool base layer, a warm mid layer, a windproof coat, a hat and gloves. Add ice grips if the pavements are slippery. Because the evening tour provides a winter suit, you do not have to buy extra gear, but your own layers underneath make a big difference.

Coffee, Lunch and an Early Dinner

Storgata and the streets around the harbour have bakeries, cafes and restaurants at most budgets, and Norwegian prices are high, so lunch is where you can save. A bakery or a cafe lunch is cheaper than a restaurant dinner and keeps you light for the evening. If you want a proper meal, eat early: book a table for 16:30 or 17:00 so that you finish well before the 18:30 pickup. The tour provides a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks, so skip the heavy three-course dinner.

If you have food allergies or dietary needs, tell the operator when you book. For the walk itself, carry a thermos or buy a hot drink as you go; cold hands and a warm cup of coffee are a good combination in the Arctic.

If It Snows, Rains or Blows

Arctic weather changes quickly, and a snowy or windy afternoon is not a reason to cancel. Break the walk into short loops with indoor stops: a museum, a cafe, a shop, a library. Dress for the worst and let the storm be part of the atmosphere. If the forecast is truly miserable, the weather also affects the evening, so check conditions in the afternoon. The guide may be able to chase gaps in the cloud, but nothing is guaranteed.

On very icy days, wear ice grips over your boots and walk slowly on pavements; the harbour front can be slippery. Keep your phone in an inside pocket and take photographs in short bursts so the battery does not die.

Adding a Second Day

If you have two or three days, make the city centre the light day. Spend another day on a daytime activity such as the Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 1,500, 10:00 pickup, ages 10+) or the Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 2,100, 5 to 6 hours with lunch). Then keep the northern lights for at least two evenings if the budget allows, because the sky decides and a second attempt raises your chances.

A sample three-day plan: day one a city walk and a first evening tour, day two a fjord day and a quiet evening, day three a snowshoe hike and a second try for the lights. This pattern protects you against a single cloudy night, and it shows you a wide range of the area without exhausting you.

We think the best Tromsø trips are the ones with space in them. You will remember the quiet cafe stop as much as the big tour.
