Tromsø for the 8 December Long Weekend: A Four-Day Northern Lights Plan for Italy and Spain
In 2026, 8 December falls on a Tuesday, which gives travellers in Italy and Spain a classic bridge weekend. Four days is just enough for the Arctic if you plan it well. This is our itinerary for 5–8 December: which tours to book, in which order, what it costs and what to pack for the first real week of polar night.

This guide is built from our own winters in the Arctic and from the live Legendary Adventure tour pages in Tromsø — prices, pickup times and what is included come straight from the operator, never invented.
For a four-day 5–8 December weekend in Tromsø we would book the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 2,300 per person, 18:30 pickup, 5–8 hours) for the second evening, the Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 2,100, 10:00 pickup, 5–6 hours, lunch included) for a full daytime, and either the Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 1,500) or the evening Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 1,500) for a lighter third activity. For two people that comes to NOK 11,800 before the 5% reader discount; enter HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 when booking online. Always check public holidays and your employer’s rules for the bridge day yourself.

Why the 8 December Weekend Works for the Arctic
In Italy, 8 December is the public holiday of the Immaculate Conception, and in Spain the Inmaculada is a holiday too, with the Constitution Day holiday just before it. In 2026, 8 December is a Tuesday, so many people take the Monday off and turn a weekend into a four-day trip. Holiday rules vary by region and employer, so treat this as general context and check your own calendar.
For a Tromsø trip that matters, because the Arctic rewards a minimum of three nights. With a Saturday arrival and a Tuesday evening return you have three nights on the ground, which is the number we recommend for a first visit: one to settle in, one for the chase, and a spare. It is the same logic we apply to short breaks from Rovaniemi, where we live: do not try to see everything, and make sure one evening has slack in case cloud ruins plan A.
The other reason is timing. Early December is a good moment for the dark: the days are very short and the sky is dark by mid-afternoon, so you can enjoy a proper evening tour without staying up until midnight. Our advice is to book soon, since this is a peak period for holiday travellers across Europe.
A practical note for travellers coming from the south: Tromsø in early December is a big change in temperature and in daylight. Coastal Arctic weather is milder than inland Lapland but wetter and windier, and conditions can swing from calm to blowing snow within a day. Pack for variation, keep a flexible plan, and treat each tour as weather-dependent. The guides adapt routes, and the operator runs tours when conditions are safe.
The Four-Day Itinerary
| Day | Plan | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sat 5 Dec | Arrive, check in, walk the centre, early night | Absorb the dark and the cold; no fixed pickups |
| Sun 6 Dec | Daytime: Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour (10:00). Evening: free | Gentle first full day, lunch included |
| Mon 7 Dec | Rest or snowshoe hike (10:00). Evening: Northern Lights Tour (18:30) | Best chance of a rested group for the chase |
| Tue 8 Dec | Late breakfast, souvenir walk, departure | No tours that end late before travel |
If your flights leave on the Tuesday morning, move the chase to Sunday and skip the snowshoe, because the tour can run 5–8 hours and a dawn flight after a late return is miserable.

The point of this plan is slack. Ideally you keep Sunday evening free as a reserve for the northern lights tour, should Monday’s forecast look poor.
The Northern Lights Night
The Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is the centrepiece of the weekend. It leaves from outside Clarion Hotel The Edge at 18:30, takes two to eight guests in a premium Mercedes-Benz vehicle, includes a winter suit, a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks, and is recommended for ages 7 and up. The route is planned from the latest weather forecasts and the guides’ knowledge, heading inland or along the coast to find clear sky, and the guides share stories about Sámi folklore along the way.
Nothing is guaranteed, and it is only fair to say so; the lights depend on weather and activity. What you can control is the number of chances. With three nights in Tromsø you can choose Monday as the target and keep Sunday or Tuesday evening as a backup if you find you want a second try.
Families with younger children can look at the Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 15,000 per group, all ages, pickup location chosen at checkout).
One more tip for the chase night: eat something light before the pickup, even though the tour includes a warm meal, and wear the warmest socks you own. Standing on snow for an hour feels very different from walking in it, and cold feet are the number one reason people ask to go back to the vehicle early.
The Daytime Tour: Sommarøy and Kvaløya
For the daytime we would choose the Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5. A 5–6 hour coastal journey from the 10:00 pickup, it takes in fjords, snow-covered mountains and white-sand beaches, with scenic stops, a chance of reindeer, moose and sea eagles, and a local Arctic lunch at Sommarøy Arctic Hotel (vegan and vegetarian options are available).
In early December the sun does not rise high; the light is a long blue and pink twilight that photographs beautifully. Bring a hat and gloves for the stops, and ask your guide about the best places to photograph.
At NOK 2,100 per person it includes the guide, the transport and lunch, so it is good value for a full day. It is a proper sit-down meal, not a snack.

If you want to add something active, the Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is a 4-hour daytime walk (NOK 1,500, ages 10 and up, 10:00 pickup outside Clarion Hotel The Edge) with snowshoes and poles included. You do not need experience, only warm boots and some stamina. It works well on the morning of the chase day if you keep the afternoon quiet.

For a gentler evening, the Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 1,500, 4 hours, 18:30 pickup) offers a night walk with snacks and a hot drink and a chance of the lights. It is a good plan B for the Sunday reserve evening.
Do not stack more than one early-start tour on top of a chase night. Four days feels long on a map and short in an Arctic winter.
Budget for a Couple
| Tour | Per person | Two people |
|---|---|---|
| Northern Lights Tour | NOK 2,300 | NOK 4,600 |
| Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour | NOK 2,100 | NOK 4,200 |
| Arctic Snowshoe Hike | NOK 1,500 | NOK 3,000 |
| Total | NOK 5,900 | NOK 11,800 |
| With HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (-5%) | NOK 5,605 | NOK 11,210 |
That saves NOK 590 for two on the three tours. Flights, accommodation and meals are separate and not part of the calculation; we have no prices for them.
What to Pack for Early December
The northern lights tour includes a winter suit, but you need your own base layers, socks, hat, gloves and warm waterproof boots for the daytime tours. Bring a thermal layer, a fleece, a windproof jacket, two pairs of wool socks, and hand warmers. The snowshoe tours need boots you can walk in, not fashion boots.
For photos, a phone is enough. Keep the battery warm in an inside pocket, and bring a power bank. If you wear glasses, a thin anti-fog cloth helps when you step from the vehicle into the cold. Travelling with children? Pack snacks, spare mittens and something quiet for the drive.
For more on dressing in Tromsø, see our guide to what to wear on winter tours.
Do not forget travel documents and a small bag for the vehicle: passport or ID if your airline requires it, phone charger, a bottle of water and any medication you take. Norway is expensive, so a card that works abroad is more useful than cash.

Small-group tours hold a maximum of eight guests, so popular dates fill. Which tour should I book first?
The Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5, because it depends most on clear sky and on having a spare night.
Is it too dark in early December?

The fjord tour and the snowshoe hike leave at 10:00, and the northern lights tour at 18:30 from outside Clarion Hotel The Edge.
What is the cancellation rule?
A full refund more than 48 hours before the tour; 100% charged inside 48 hours.

Our Honest Final Word
The 8 December bridge is a good fit for Tromsø if you plan around slack: three nights on the ground, one chase with a spare evening behind it and a daytime tour on the side. Do not try to add more than that. You will see more of the Arctic by doing fewer things well.
