Why February Suits Snowshoeing

Ask a local what the best month for winter activities is and many will say February, with March close behind. By February the snowpack has had months to build, the worst of the polar darkness is behind you, and the days are getting longer at a speed that visitors find startling. A morning that was twilight in early January is bright daylight by the end of February.

For snowshoeing, deep snow is the main ingredient. Snowshoes spread your weight so you walk on top of snow that would otherwise swallow your legs, and a thick cover also makes the mountains look cleaner and the fjords more dramatic. You can plan a trip for February now if you are roughly three months out or less; the dates for school holidays fill early, so book flights and tours together.

What the Hike Is

The Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is a guided 4-hour outing from Tromsø, and the 4 hours include the transfer to the trailhead and back. Pickup is at 10:00 outside Clarion Hotel The Edge; look for a black Mercedes. Groups are 2–8 guests and larger groups are possible on request. The price is NOK 1,500 per person and covers a local expert guide, transport in a Mercedes minivan, and snowshoes and poles.

The operator describes an adventure through pristine snow with views of snow-capped mountains and fjords, and says you may encounter reindeer, foxes and seabirds. We treat the wildlife as a bonus and the landscape as the main event. The age recommendation is 10 and up, and the route is chosen by the guide based on that day’s conditions.

The Light in February

This is the biggest change from the midwinter. In early February the sun rises above the horizon again in Tromsø and daylight lasts longer each week. At the 10:00 start you are walking in genuine daylight, and by the time the hike ends the afternoon light is soft and golden. For photographers this is a sweet spot: strong contrast on the snow, long shadows and a sky that goes from pale blue to pink.

The practical effect is that you can see the whole landscape. The shape of the fjord, the line of the ridge and the distance to the next valley all make sense in a way that blue twilight cannot show. That is why many people who did a polar night hike in December come back in February and feel they are on a different tour.

How Hard Is It in Deep Snow?

It is a walk, not a climb, and the guide sets the pace for the slowest person. Deep snow makes walking feel a little harder than on a packed trail because the snowshoes sink a few centimetres and you lift your feet slightly higher. If you can walk comfortably for a couple of hours at home, including some hills, you will manage. Poles help a great deal on slopes and with balance, and the guide will show you how to use them in a couple of minutes at the trailhead.

Tell the guide before you start if you have a bad knee or any other issue. Weather can change the character of the day: a calm, sunny February morning is wonderful, while wind and blowing snow call for extra layers. The operator runs the tour when it is safe.

What to Wear in February

No winter suit is listed on this tour, so dress for hiking in cold weather:

  • Thermal base layer, fleece or wool mid-layer, windproof and waterproof outer layer
  • Insulated, waterproof winter boots with grip (snowshoes attach to normal winter boots)
  • Warm socks plus a spare pair, hat, gloves and a neck gaiter
  • Sunglasses, because bright snow in February can be dazzling
  • A small daypack with water, a thermos and a snack, since the daytime listing does not mention food

You will warm up quickly while walking, so layers that you can remove are better than one heavy coat.

February Family Plans: Half-Term and Winter Breaks

February is a major holiday month for families from the UK, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands and others, so availability on popular dates is tighter. The hike is recommended for ages 10+, which fits many older children and teenagers. For families of four or more, price the Private Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 12,000 per group, 4 hours, ages 10+) against four shared tickets: with eight guests it matches the shared per-person price, and you get your own guide and pace. Read more about family options on our Tromsø activities hub.

The Morning, Step by Step

Arrive outside Clarion Hotel The Edge a few minutes before 10:00 with your boots on and your layers ready. The black Mercedes minivan collects the group, and the guide uses the drive to explain the plan and check everyone’s clothing. At the trailhead, the snowshoes and poles are fitted; if you have never worn them, the guide demonstrates the wider stance and the pole technique, and you will be moving within minutes. The walk follows a route chosen that morning for snow and weather, with pauses for photographs, a drink and stories about the landscape and local life. The return drive brings you back to central Tromsø in time for a late lunch. The only fixed points in the day are the 10:00 pickup and the 4-hour total.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The most common mistake is the wrong boots: thin or non-waterproof footwear gets cold and wet quickly, and snowshoes will not help. The second is overdressing at the start, so that you are sweating a few minutes into the hike; start slightly cool and add layers at stops. The third is forgetting food and water, since the daytime hike does not list snacks. The fourth is booking too late for school-holiday weeks. The fifth is expecting a guarantee of wildlife; enjoy the view and treat reindeer or foxes as a gift.

Is the Hike Worth NOK 1,500?

We think so, for first-time visitors. You pay for a guide who knows safe routes in changing conditions, transport to a trailhead you would struggle to reach without a car, and equipment you would not buy for one trip. For a couple the cost is NOK 3,000 before the reader discount, or NOK 2,850 with it. If you are an experienced hiker with your own snowshoes and a rental car, the value case is weaker, and the Advanced option or your own route may suit you better. For everyone else, a guided morning on snow is one of the easiest ways to feel properly inside the Arctic landscape.

Building the Perfect February Day

A classic day looks like this: breakfast, the 10:00 pickup and the hike, a relaxed lunch back in town, a nap, then the evening Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 2,300 per person, 18:30 pickup from 25 October, 5–8 hours). You get a daytime and a night-time Arctic experience in 24 hours. If that sounds like too much, put them on different days. The chase is a long evening and a good night’s sleep matters.

Another pairing is the hike and the Sommarøy & Kvaløya fjord tour on separate days, which gives you mountains one day and coast the next.
