Private Tours in Tromsø for Families and Groups: When Paying for Your Own Guide Actually Saves Money

A private tour sounds like a luxury until you divide the price by the number of people in your family. We ran the numbers on Legendary Adventure’s private tours in Tromsø — the northern lights chase, the fjord drive, the snowshoe hike, the reindeer farm and the huskies — to show exactly when private beats shared, who it is for, who should skip it, and how to book with 5% off.

Short answer

Legendary Adventure prices its private tours per vehicle, not per person, so a group of six to eight pays about the same as — or less than — the shared tour and gets its own guide, route, pickup point and no age limit. The Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 15,000 for up to 8 people (NOK 1,875 each with eight, versus NOK 2,300 on the shared chase); the Private Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 15,000 and the Private Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 NOK 12,000. The big-ticket days are the Private Reindeer Farm Visit with Reindeer Feeding & Sámi Culture5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 35,000) and Private Dog Sledding – Husky Experience5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 95,000). Private makes sense for young families, groups of six or more and anyone who needs flexibility; it does not for couples. Enter HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at checkout for 5% off any of them.

The Maths: Private Tour Price Divided by Your Group

The whole argument for private tours in Tromsø comes down to one calculation. Legendary Adventure’s shared tours are priced per person; its private tours are priced per group, for up to 8 guests. Divide the private price by the number of people you are actually travelling with and compare it with the shared price:

TourShared, per personPrivate, per groupPrivate with 4Private with 6Private with 8
Northern lights chaseNOK 2,300NOK 15,000NOK 3,750NOK 2,500NOK 1,875
Sommarøy & Kvaløya fjord tourNOK 2,100NOK 15,000NOK 3,750NOK 2,500NOK 1,875
Snowshoe hikeNOK 1,500NOK 12,000NOK 3,000NOK 2,000NOK 1,500
Aurora snowshoe hikeNOK 1,500NOK 12,000NOK 3,000NOK 2,000NOK 1,500
Ersfjord & Grøtfjord fjord tourNOK 1,500NOK 12,000NOK 3,000NOK 2,000NOK 1,500

Read honestly, the table says three things. With four people, private costs 60–100% more per head — you are paying for flexibility, not saving. With six, the premium shrinks to NOK 200–500 per person, which for a family is often worth it on its own. With seven or eight, private is the same price or cheaper: the Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 beats the shared chase from seven people (NOK 2,143 each), the Private Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 from eight.

So the title of this post is true, but only for groups. Two grandparents, two parents and three or four children — the classic multi-generational Arctic trip — is exactly the group private tours are cheaper for. Two friends should book shared and spend the difference on dinner.

All Ages vs 7+ and 10+: The Rule That Decides It for Young Families

Price is the second reason families go private. The first is the age rule. Legendary Adventure’s shared tours carry recommended minimum ages — 7+ for the northern lights chase and the fjord tours, 10+ for the snowshoe hikes — because a small group of strangers cannot absorb a tired five-year-old at 23:00. The private versions of the chase and the fjord drives drop that limit entirely.

In practice, a family with a baby, a toddler or a child under seven has one realistic way to do a northern lights chase in Tromsø, and it is the private van. We think that is the right call: a chase can run until 02:00, and a child who needs to go home at 23:00 should be able to without seven other guests losing their night.

Flexibility: Pickup, Pace and Children Who Fall Asleep

Beyond price and the age rule, three practical things change when the vehicle is yours.

You choose the pickup location at checkout. Shared tours leave from outside Clarion Hotel The Edge on the harbour front — fine in the centre, a nuisance if you have an apartment across the bridge or a cabin on Kvaløya. On the private tours, the booking form asks where you want to be collected. For a family with car seats and a bedtime, door-to-door is worth real money.

You set the pace. On the private fjord tour the guide stops where your group is happy and skips what bores the children. On the private chase the guide still goes where the sky is clear — that is the point — but the length of each stop, the timing of the meal and the decision to call it a night are yours.

Children can sleep. A chase is 5–8 hours, most of it after a small child’s bedtime. In a private van the back row becomes a bed and the guide wakes you when the sky goes green. On a shared tour the same child is awake, loud and miserable, and so are you.

The private tours use the same Mercedes minibuses and the same guides. You are not paying for a bigger car; you are paying for an empty one.

The Big-Ticket Days: Reindeer Farm and Huskies, Honestly Priced

Two private tours sit in a different price bracket and deserve a frank word, because at NOK 35,000 and NOK 95,000 the per-group maths stops looking clever and starts looking like a decision.

The Private Reindeer Farm Visit with Reindeer Feeding & Sámi Culture5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is a 6–7 hour day for all ages: pickup at 08:30, your own guide/driver, reindeer feeding, Sámi culture and a Sámi lunch. With eight people it is NOK 4,375 each; for a family of four, NOK 8,750 each. We live in Finnish Lapland, where reindeer farm visits are a shared-tour staple at a fraction of that, so we will be direct: this is a premium, private, whole-day cultural experience for a group that wants it to themselves. For a three-generation family on a once-in-a-lifetime trip, that is exactly the brief.

The Private Dog Sledding – Husky Experience5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at NOK 95,000 for up to 8 (ages 7+, 5–6 hours, pickup 08:45) is the same category: NOK 11,875 per person at full occupancy for a husky day with nobody else on the trail. If it is within budget, it will be the day the children talk about for years. If not, the private chase and the private fjord tour deliver most of the magic for a sixth of the price.

A Sample 3-Day Private Family Plan in Tromsø

Here is how we would build three winter days in Tromsø for a family of six — two grandparents, two parents, two children aged 5 and 11 — using private tours so the five-year-old is never excluded by an age rule.

The private snowshoe hike suits families with children of ten and up.

Day 1 — arrive, then chase. Check in, eat early. 19:00: the Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 collects you at your accommodation. The five-year-old sleeps in the back row from 22:00 and is woken for the lights; home when the family says so. NOK 15,000, or NOK 2,500 each.

Day 2 — reindeer, or a slow fjord day. After a late night, a 08:30 pickup for the Private Reindeer Farm Visit with Reindeer Feeding & Sámi Culture5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is a stretch, so decide the night before. If the budget allows, go: 6–7 hours, Sámi lunch, all ages, NOK 35,000. If not, the Private Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 — no 08:30 pickup listed — gives five to six hours of fjords, beaches and lunch, with the van turning around whenever the youngest has had enough. NOK 15,000.

Day 3 — split the generations. The 11-year-old, a parent and a grandparent take the Private Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (4 hours, ages 10+, NOK 12,000 — or the shared Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at NOK 1,500 each if three feels too few for a private van). The others take the five-year-old around the city, and if night one was cloudy, the chase is rebooked for tonight.

Total for the fjord-tour version: NOK 42,000 for six people over three days — NOK 7,000 each — with every pickup at your own door and no age rule hit once. The same three days on shared tours would exclude the youngest child from all of it.

Who Should NOT Book a Private Tour

We would be doing you a disservice if this read as a sales page, so here is the other side.

  • Couples and solo travellers. At two people the private chase is NOK 7,500 each against NOK 2,300 shared. The shared tours are capped at 8 guests, which is already small enough to feel personal. Book shared, every time.
  • Groups of three or four without young children. You pay a 60–100% premium for flexibility you may not use. If everyone is over ten, fit and happy to go with the flow, shared is better value.
  • People who want to meet other travellers. A campfire with six strangers from four countries is part of the Tromsø experience. A private van is quieter — a feature for families, a loss for sociable solo travellers.
  • Anyone going private to “guarantee” the lights. It does not. You get your own guide and route; the sky is still the sky, and the no-lights policy is the same as on the shared tour.

If you are six or more, travelling with a child under seven, staying outside the centre, or simply want the day run at your pace, private is the right call and the numbers back it up. Otherwise, the shared tours are excellent and cheaper.

How to Book a Private Tour With the Hungrytravelfamily Discount

Private tours are booked directly with Legendary Adventure (Legendary Group AS, Tromsø) through the same FareHarbor calendar as the shared ones; we never handle your payment and their terms cover the booking. Open the Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 — or whichever private tour you have chosen — pick a date, enter the number of guests (the price is per group, so it does not change until you pass 8), choose your pickup location, and on the checkout page type HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 into the promo-code field. On a NOK 15,000 private tour the 5% is NOK 750 off; on the reindeer day it is NOK 1,750.

Cancellation terms for each private tour are shown on its booking page; on the shared tours the rule is a full refund more than 48 hours before departure and a full charge inside 48 hours. A private tour is a whole vehicle, so book early for Christmas, New Year and February half-term.

Full transparency: we are Legendary Adventure’s partner and may earn a small commission on bookings made with our code. It never changes your price — the 5% is a genuine reader discount on top of the normal rate.

FAQ

How much is a private northern lights tour in Tromsø?

Legendary Adventure’s Private Northern Lights Tour is NOK 15,000 for the whole vehicle, up to 8 guests, 5–8 hours, with a 19:00 pickup from a location you choose. With eight people that is NOK 1,875 each, less than the NOK 2,300 shared chase. Code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 gives 5% off at checkout.

Are private tours in Tromsø cheaper than shared tours?

Only for larger groups. The private chase is cheaper per person from seven people, the private Sommarøy fjord tour from eight, and the private snowshoe hike matches the shared price at eight. With four people, private costs 60–100% more per head.

Can young children join a private tour?

Yes. The Private Northern Lights Tour, both private fjord tours and the Private Reindeer Farm Visit are all ages. The private husky experience is 7+, and the private snowshoe hikes are recommended for 10+.

Where does a private tour pick you up?

You select your preferred pickup location during checkout — hotel, apartment or another address — instead of meeting at Clarion Hotel The Edge as on the shared tours.

How many people fit on a private tour?

The private tours are priced for 2–8 guests per vehicle; larger groups are available on request from the operator.

What is the cancellation policy for private tours?

Each private tour’s terms are shown on its booking page. The shared tours refund in full more than 48 hours before departure and charge in full inside 48 hours.

Our Honest Final Word

Per-group pricing turns the private tour from a luxury into a spreadsheet question, and for families of six or more the spreadsheet says yes: the same guide, the same Mercedes, your own pickup, your own pace, no age limit, and a per-person price at or below the shared tour. For families with a child under seven it is not even a question — it is the only way to do the northern lights chase. For couples and small groups of adults, the shared tours are the better buy, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a van.
