Private vs Shared Sommarøy & Kvaløya Fjord Tour: Where the Maths Breaks Even for Groups of 2 to 8
A private day out to Sommarøy and Kvaløya costs NOK 15,000 per group. The shared tour costs NOK 2,100 per person. We worked out the cost for every group size from 2 to 8, and what else changes besides the price, so you can choose without a calculator.

This guide is built from our own winters in the Arctic and from the live Legendary Adventure tour pages in Tromsø — prices, pickup times and what is included come straight from the operator, never invented.
The Private Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 costs NOK 15,000 per group (private). The shared Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 costs NOK 2,100 per person. Do the division and the private version is cheaper per person only at eight guests (NOK 1,875 each, against NOK 2,100). At seven guests the shared tour is still NOK 300 cheaper in total (NOK 14,700). Below seven, the private tour is a price you pay for something else: your own group, a pickup location you choose, and no minimum age. Both leave at 10:00, run 5–6 hours and include a guide, a premium Mercedes-Benz vehicle and a local lunch.
Either way, book online and type HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 in the promo-code field for 5% off.

Two versions of the same day
This is one of those choices where the headline numbers look far apart, NOK 2,100 against NOK 15,000, and the real answer sits in a single group size. So before the table, a short reminder of what you are comparing. Both tours take the same basic day out to the islands of Kvaløya and Sommarøy, west of Tromsø: coastal roads, fjords, mountains, white-sand Arctic beaches and a local lunch. Both are listed as year-round, 5–6 hours, with a 10:00 pickup, and both take 2–8 guests (larger groups on request).

The differences are in who is in the vehicle and where it starts:
- Shared: Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5, NOK 2,100 per person, ages 7+ recommended, pickup outside Clarion Hotel The Edge (look for a black Mercedes).
- Private: the Private Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour, NOK 15,000 per group, all ages, pickup location selected during checkout.
Inclusions match: local expert guide, transport in a premium Mercedes-Benz vehicle, and a local lunch. According to the operator, the lunch for the shared tour is at the Sommarøy Arctic Hotel, with vegan and vegetarian options.
The table: what each group size really pays
Here is the arithmetic for every group size the tour allows. Shared total is NOK 2,100 times the number of guests. Private per person is NOK 15,000 divided by the number of guests, rounded to the nearest krone.
| Guests | Shared total | Private total | Private per person | Cheaper option |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | NOK 4,200 | NOK 15,000 | NOK 7,500 | Shared, by NOK 10,800 |
| 3 | NOK 6,300 | NOK 15,000 | NOK 5,000 | Shared, by NOK 8,700 |
| 4 | NOK 8,400 | NOK 15,000 | NOK 3,750 | Shared, by NOK 6,600 |
| 5 | NOK 10,500 | NOK 15,000 | NOK 3,000 | Shared, by NOK 4,500 |
| 6 | NOK 12,600 | NOK 15,000 | NOK 2,500 | Shared, by NOK 2,400 |
| 7 | NOK 14,700 | NOK 15,000 | NOK 2,143 | Shared, by NOK 300 |
| 8 | NOK 16,800 | NOK 15,000 | NOK 1,875 | Private, by NOK 1,800 |
The exact break-even is 15,000 divided by 2,100, which is 7.14 guests. You cannot book 7.14 people, so in practice the private tour overtakes the shared one only when you reach eight. At seven it is almost level: you pay NOK 300 more in total, about NOK 43 each, for a vehicle that is only yours.
What changes when the 5% reader discount is applied
The discount applies to bookings made online on Legendary Adventure’s own booking page, and the same 5% comes off either tour. Because it is a percentage, it does not change the order in the table, but it is worth seeing the numbers. After 5% off, the private tour is NOK 14,250 per group and the shared tour is NOK 1,995 per person.
- Seven guests: shared NOK 13,965, private NOK 14,250. Private costs NOK 285 more, roughly NOK 41 per person.
- Eight guests: shared NOK 15,960, private NOK 14,250. Private is NOK 1,710 cheaper, which is NOK 1,781.25 each against NOK 1,995.
- Four guests: shared NOK 7,980, private NOK 14,250, which is NOK 3,562.50 each.
These figures assume the discount is taken off the listed price at checkout. Always confirm the final total on the booking page before you pay, since that is the figure that counts. The steps are in the how-to-book section below.
What else differs besides the price
If price were the only factor, the table would settle it. But a private vehicle changes the shape of the day in ways a number cannot capture, and some of those matter more than a few hundred kroner.
- Pickup location. The private tour lets you select your preferred pickup during checkout. The shared tour starts outside Clarion Hotel The Edge. If you are staying across the island, or in a cabin or apartment with luggage and small children, a door-to-door start is a real convenience.
- Age. The shared tour recommends ages 7+. The private tour is listed for all ages. For a family with a toddler or a baby, that is the deciding line, whatever the maths says.
- Who you travel with. The shared tour is a small group of up to 8, which can include people you have not met. Private means your party and the guide.
- Pace. With only your own group on board, you have a direct line to the guide about what you want from the day. We cannot tell you exactly what can be adjusted, as the operator does not list it, so ask when you book.
- Lunch timing. The shared tour has a fixed midday stop. If anyone has dietary needs or an early-riser child, mention it when you book either tour.

We have not driven these tours ourselves yet, so we will stay close to what the operator lists. The route runs from Tromsø along winding coastal roads, with several scenic stops for photographs. The description mentions fjords, snow-covered mountains, beaches and clear Arctic water, and it names reindeer, moose and white-tailed sea eagles as things to watch for. Seasonal whale sightings, including orcas and humpbacks, are mentioned for migration periods only. It is an honest framing: wildlife depends on the day, the season and luck.

The guide shares stories about fishing traditions, island life in remote communities and coastal culture, and the day passes through small villages. Lunch is the midday anchor. We would not promise weather or visibility; in winter the daylight is short, so check the booking page for how that affects the date you want.
Because the 5–6 hour duration is the same on both, you should expect to be back in the middle of the afternoon.
Who should pick which
Here is how we would split it, based only on the facts above.

Pick the shared tour if you are two to six people with children aged 7 and over, and you are happy to join a small group. The price advantage is large at every size up to six, and at seven it is NOK 300 in total.
Pick the private tour if you have eight guests (the only size where it also wins on price), or you have children under 7, or you want a pickup from your own accommodation, or you value having the guide for your own group. In those cases the extra cost is a choice about comfort and control, not a bad deal.
Seven guests is the interesting case. The difference is NOK 300 before discount and NOK 285 after. We would take the private tour for that money, purely for the pickup and the privacy.
For groups of nine or more, larger groups are available on request; ask Legendary Adventure directly rather than assuming the table above scales.
If five to six hours is more than you want
Some families, especially with a toddler, find a full day too long even in a private vehicle. In that case there is a shorter private option: the Private Ersfjord & Grøtfjord Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5. It is NOK 12,000 per group (private), 3–4 hours, all ages, pickup at 10:00 from a location you select at checkout, and it includes a minivan (Mercedes), a local guide and a coffee or tea with a cinnamon bun. It is not the same day, as there is no sit-down lunch, but for a group that wants an easy morning on the fjords it is a calmer shape.
Per person it works out as follows: NOK 6,000 for two, NOK 4,000 for three, NOK 3,000 for four, NOK 2,400 for five, NOK 2,000 for six, NOK 1,714 for seven (rounded) and NOK 1,500 for eight. Compare it with the Sommarøy numbers in the table above, remembering that the route and the inclusions differ.
What we would book
As friends who send people to Tromsø, we would keep it simple. Small family with kids over 7: shared. A group of eight: private. Anyone with a baby or a toddler: private, and consider the shorter Ersfjord version. A group of seven: private, if you value the door-to-door start.
If you are still deciding which other days fit around this one, our overview of all Tromsø activities lays them out. A transparency note: we are Legendary Adventure’s partner and may earn a commission on bookings; it never changes your price.

Our Honest Final Word
The surprise in this comparison is how close the two tours get at seven guests, and how clearly the private tour wins at eight. For everyone below that, the private tour is not a bargain, but it is not meant to be: it buys a pickup at your door, no age limit, and a vehicle that belongs to your group.
