Northern Lights in Tromsø or Rovaniemi? An Honest Comparison From People Who Live in Lapland
We live in Rovaniemi and we send friends to Tromsø for the lights. Here is how the two compare on weather, season, daytime activities and cost, and when each one wins.

This guide is built from our own winters in the Arctic and from the live Legendary Adventure tour pages in Tromsø — prices, pickup times and what is included come straight from the operator, never invented.
Both places can deliver, and the honest answer depends on what else you want from the trip. Pick Tromsø if the aurora is the main event: the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is a small-group chase (NOK 2,300 per person, 5–8 hours, winter suit, warm meal, snacks and hot drinks included) that drives to wherever the sky is clearest. Pick Rovaniemi if Santa, cabins and a family Christmas come first and the lights are a bonus. If Tromsø wins for you, book on Legendary Adventure’s own booking page and type HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 in the promo-code field for 5% off.

Why You Can Trust This Comparison
We live in Rovaniemi, on the Arctic Circle in Finnish Lapland, so this is not a post written by someone selling a place they have never compared. We have stood in snowy car parks in Lapland at midnight waiting for a cloud to move, and we have been to Tromsø and Northern Norway as well. That makes us unusually well placed to say something that tour pages rarely say: both destinations are good, and neither is a guarantee.
One disclosure up front. We are Legendary Adventure’s partner for Tromsø tours and may earn a commission when you book with our reader discount. It never changes your price. We still send plenty of friends to Rovaniemi for the things Rovaniemi does best, and you will see those below.
Latitude Matters Less Than Cloud
The first thing visitors ask is which place is further north, as if that settles it. Tromsø sits at about 69.6° north and Rovaniemi at about 66.5° north. Both lie under the auroral zone, the ring around the magnetic pole where the lights appear most often, so on an active night either can have a show.
In practice the difference between 66.5° and 69.6° is smaller than the difference between a clear sky and a cloudy one. Aurora happens far above the weather; you can only see it through gaps in the cloud. That is why the real question is not “where is the aurora stronger” but “where am I most likely to find a clear sky during my particular nights”, and the answer to that depends on how you search for it.
If you stay put in one spot, your odds are those of the local weather. If a guide moves you around to chase clear sky, your odds are those of the whole region’s weather. That single difference is the biggest argument for a chase tour, and it is the thing Tromsø does especially well.
Weather: Coast Versus Inland
Tromsø is on the coast. The sea keeps it milder than you might expect at that latitude, but the coast also brings fast-changing weather, with snow showers and low cloud rolling in from the Norwegian Sea. It can be cloudy in town and clear an hour’s drive inland. Rovaniemi is inland, so it is colder and its weather tends to sit for longer; a clear spell can last days, and so can a grey one.

This is where the format of the tour matters. Legendary Adventure describes its chase as a route prepared from the latest weather forecasts and the guides’ knowledge of the area, heading inland or along the coast depending on the night. Small vehicles can change plan quickly. From our own experience of Arctic nights, a flexible route is worth more than any extra degree of latitude.
In Rovaniemi most aurora tours also move around, but the surrounding terrain is flatter and the weather systems larger, so there is often less “the sky is clear just over there” to gain by driving. In Tromsø, fjords and mountains split the weather into pockets, which is exactly what a chase exploits.
Darkness, Season and the Polar Night
Aurora needs darkness. Both destinations have plenty of it from autumn to early spring. Tromsø’s polar night, when the sun stays below the horizon at midday, runs through the heart of winter, and you get a soft blue twilight rather than true night during the day. Rovaniemi has a few hours of low daylight even at midwinter. For aurora, the practical difference is small, because the lights appear in the dark evening and night hours in both places.
What changes with the season is the rest of your day. In Tromsø’s darkest weeks the daytime tours, such as the fjord drive or the snowshoe hike, run in blue light, which many people find beautiful and some find short. By February and March the days stretch quickly and you can pair a bright daytime activity with an evening chase. If you are planning a trip about four to eight weeks from now, that points to December through February as the busy window, with March still giving good dark evenings and much more daylight.

This is where the two destinations really diverge. Rovaniemi is built around Christmas: Santa Claus Village, reindeer sleigh rides, husky farms and glass-roofed cabins, all within a short drive of the airport. For a young family whose children are at the “I want to meet Santa” stage, Rovaniemi is unbeatable and we say so as residents.

Tromsø is a different kind of place: a small Arctic city with mountains and fjords right outside the window. Legendary Adventure’s day tours show it. The Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 2,100 per person, 5–6 hours, local lunch included) takes you along coastal roads to white-sand Arctic beaches. The Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 1,500 per person, 4 hours including transfer, ages 10+) puts you up in the snow above the fjords. You can read the full lineup on our Tromsø activities hub.
If your priority is scenery and active days with a chase at night, Tromsø fits. If your priority is a storybook Christmas, choose Rovaniemi and treat the aurora as a bonus.
Getting There, Costs and Logistics
Both cities have small airports close to the centre, and both are easy to reach from major European hubs, though your route will depend on where you start. Check flights for your own dates; we are not going to quote fares that change daily.

On tour costs we can be specific for Tromsø because they come straight from the operator’s listing: the shared Northern Lights Tour is NOK 2,300 per person, and the Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 15,000 per group for up to 8 guests, all ages, with pickup from the location you choose at checkout. Both include a Mercedes-Benz vehicle, a local expert guide, a winter suit, and a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks. For a couple the shared tour is the natural choice; for a family of four or more the private van starts to make sense on both comfort and per-person cost.
Everything in Tromsø is booked directly with the operator, so you pay in advance and cancel free until 48 hours before departure; inside 48 hours the full amount is charged.
Which One Should You Pick? A Quick Table
| Your situation | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Aurora is the main goal, 2–4 nights | Tromsø | Flexible chase across coast and inland pockets |
| Young children who want Santa | Rovaniemi | Christmas attractions within minutes |
| Active days: fjords, snowshoeing | Tromsø | Mountains and sea in one day |
| Cosy cabin, little driving | Rovaniemi | Compact, inland and calm |
| Couples wanting scenery plus aurora | Tromsø | Day tour plus evening chase |
| Two destinations in one trip | Both | Fly between them in a longer holiday |
Notice the pattern: nothing in the table says one is better for seeing the lights. It is about what you want your days to feel like.

FAQ
Is Tromsø or Rovaniemi better for seeing the northern lights?
Neither is guaranteed. Both sit under the auroral zone, and the deciding factor on any night is cloud. Tromsø’s advantage is that a chase tour can move between coast and inland to find clearer sky.
How much does the Tromsø Northern Lights Tour cost?
NOK 2,300 per person for the shared small-group tour, including a winter suit, warm meal, snacks and hot drinks. The private version is NOK 15,000 per group. Enter HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at checkout for 5% off.
What age is the Northern Lights Tour suitable for?
The shared tour is recommended for ages 7 and up. The private tour lists all ages, which makes it the better option for younger children.
How long is the tour and where is the pickup?
The tour runs 5–8 hours. The shared tour picks up outside Clarion Hotel The Edge in Tromsø; look for a black Mercedes. Private tours let you choose a pickup location at checkout.
Can I cancel if the weather looks bad?
Cancellation is free more than 48 hours before departure. Inside 48 hours the full amount is charged, so check forecasts early but remember that a chase is designed to look for clear sky.
Can I combine Tromsø and Rovaniemi in one trip?
Yes, many travellers do on a longer holiday, using the aurora nights in each place as a second chance. Check current flight options for your dates.
Our Honest Final Word
We love Lapland, and we will not tell you Rovaniemi is a poor choice for the lights; it is a lovely one. But if you ask us where we would send a friend whose single goal is to give themselves the best shot at a clear sky, a good guide and a proper meal on a long Arctic night, we would send them to Tromsø. The format of the chase does more for your odds than a few degrees of latitude ever could.
