Why early December works
Tromsø sits well inside the polar night in December, so the sun does not rise above the horizon. What you get instead is a long blue twilight around midday and full darkness from mid-afternoon. For the aurora, that darkness is the point: the chase has a long window, and the guide is not racing the clock.
The trade-off is weather. The Norwegian coast is cloudy more often than the inland valleys, and December is not the driest month. That is the reason we favour a chase with a guide who can change direction, not a fixed stop in town.
How the daylight feels
Visitors from southern Europe are often surprised that the days are not simply black. In early December you get a few hours of soft, pastel light, strongest between roughly late morning and early afternoon. It is lovely for a fjord drive and for photographs. It is also short, which means a daytime tour should start in the morning to use it.

The Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 picks up at 10:00 and runs 5–6 hours, which fits that window well, and the price of NOK 2,100 per person includes a local lunch. The Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is 4 hours, also with a 10:00 pickup, at NOK 1,500 per person.
Aurora odds in early December, honestly
Nobody can promise the lights. What we can say is that Tromsø is under the auroral oval, so activity does not need to be high for the lights to be visible. The bigger variable is cloud, and a chase that can reach Finland or Sweden gives you more options than one that stays near the city.
We would plan for two attempts on a five-night trip, and for one attempt plus one backup on a three-night trip. That could be two northern lights tours, or one chase and one Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5, which is a 4-hour evening walk with pickup at 18:30 and a chance to see the lights.
What a week might look like
| Night | Plan | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Arrival | Rest, short walk in town | Beat jet lag, check your gear |
| Night 2 | Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 | First attempt, leaves a spare |
| Day 3 | Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 | Best daylight window |
| Night 4 | Backup attempt | Insurance against cloud |
It is a loose sketch, not a rule. The principle is to spread the aurora attempts across the trip, and to use mornings for daytime tours.

Cold, wind and what to wear
Early December in Tromsø is milder than most people expect, thanks to the Gulf Stream, but the wind and the standing-still part of an aurora night make it feel colder. The northern lights tour includes a winter suit, which solves the outer layer. Bring a wool base layer, a warm mid layer, wool socks, insulated waterproof boots, a hat, mittens and a buff.
For the snowshoe hikes, snowshoes and poles are included, so you only need your own clothes and boots.

Early December is busy but not at its peak. The really full dates are Christmas and New Year, which is when evenings sell out in advance. If your trip falls in the first week of December, you have more freedom, but we would still book the aurora tour as soon as your flights are confirmed.
If you are weighing how many tours to add, our Tromsø activities hub lists everything we would consider.
How to book with the discount
Go to the operator’s booking page for the tour, pick your date and guests, and enter HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 in the promo-code field. The price updates before you pay. Cancel more than 48 hours before departure for a full refund. We are Legendary Adventure’s partner and earn a commission, which never changes your price.
Getting there and arriving tired
Many December visitors fly in from the south in the afternoon or evening and land with a few hours of travel fatigue. Do not schedule the aurora tour for the night you land unless you are sure you can stay awake until after midnight. A chase can run 5–8 hours, and on a stubborn night you may be out until the early hours. For long-haul travellers, the second night is usually a much better choice.
If you arrive in the middle of the day, a short walk through town and an early dinner is an easy way to set your body clock. Dinner timing matters because the tour includes a meal and snacks out in the field, but not a restaurant dinner beforehand.
Family trips in the first week of December
If you travel with children, the question is bedtime. The shared Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is recommended for ages 7 and up, and the late return suits some children better than others. The Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is for all ages, and because the vehicle is yours, you can set the pace and turn back when the family is ready. It costs NOK 15,000 per group of up to 8, so a family of five pays NOK 3,000 per person before the discount, a bit more than the shared tour but with real flexibility.
For the daytime, the Ersfjord and Grøtfjord option, the Ersfjord & Grøtfjord Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5, is the shortest at 3–4 hours and NOK 1,500 per person, with a recommended age of 7+.
Photography in early December
Early December has two photographic gifts: blue-hour light at midday and aurora at night. For the aurora, a phone in night mode on a rock or small tripod will give you a good result, and a camera with a wide lens, a high ISO and a few seconds of exposure will do better. Cold drains batteries, so keep spares in an inside pocket. The guides on the tour help with settings, which is useful if you have never photographed the sky.
For the daytime, the Sommarøy coast is the better subject. The tour includes several scenic stops, and the low sun colours the mountains for longer than you would expect.
What we would book
If you can only afford one thing: the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5, early in the trip. If you have a family: the Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5. If you have a free morning: the Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 or the Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5.
FAQ
Is early December a good time to see the northern lights in Tromsø?
Yes. It is dark from the afternoon, and the guide has a long window to find clear sky. Cloud is the main risk, which is why we like a chase with a flexible route.
How much is the shared northern lights tour?
NOK 2,300 per person, with a winter suit, a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks included. Use HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 for 5% off when booking online.
What time does the tour leave in December?
Pickup is at 18:30 from 25 October, outside Clarion Hotel The Edge. Check the exact time on the booking calendar for your date.
Is there daylight for daytime tours?
There is a soft blue twilight for a few hours around midday, so tours that leave at 10:00 use it well.
Can children join?
The shared tour is recommended for ages 7+, and the private tour welcomes all ages.
How many nights should I plan for the aurora?
We suggest two attempts on trips of five nights, and a spare evening on shorter trips.
