Northern Lights in Tromsø, 13–15 November 2026: Which Night to Book for the Weekend

A November weekend in Tromsø gives you three evenings and, in most cases, one chance you can plan around. Here is how we would spread a Friday-to-Sunday trip across the Northern Lights Tour and a backup, and how to book it with our 5% reader discount.

Short answer

If you land in Tromsø on Friday 13 November and fly home on Sunday 15 November, book the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 for Saturday night and keep Friday or Sunday as the flexible evening. It costs NOK 2,300 per person, picks up outside Clarion Hotel The Edge at 18:30 and lasts 5–8 hours, with a winter suit, a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks included. Book online and type HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 in the promo-code field for 5% off. Why a three-night weekend is better than a two-night one

The northern lights are decided by two things you cannot control: solar activity and cloud. Tromsø sits under the auroral oval, so activity is rarely the problem. Cloud is. A chase tour exists to deal with that second variable, because the guides choose the route on the evening itself depending on where the sky is open. Even so, a single evening is a single roll of the dice, and a weekend trip with only one tour booked leaves you with no second chance if the weather is bad everywhere.

That is why we like the 13–15 November window. Friday evening is usually travel and settling in, Saturday is the full day, and Sunday gives you a last evening before the flight home on Monday morning if your schedule allows it. If you only have two nights, the same logic holds: choose the later of the two for the main tour and treat the earlier one as optional.

Friday 13 November: arrive, eat early, stay flexible

Most weekend visitors arrive Friday afternoon or evening. The Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 picks up at 18:30 from 25 October, so unless you land by lunchtime we would not plan to be on it. Use Friday to collect your bags, walk the harbour front, have an early dinner and sleep properly. Tromsø is a walkable town, and the pickup point outside Clarion Hotel The Edge is on the waterfront, a short walk from most central hotels.

If you do arrive early and feel fresh, check the live calendar. Availability changes daily, and the booking page shows what is open right now. We would still not put all our hopes on this evening: a rushed first night after a flight is exactly when people skip the meal, wear the wrong layers and get cold.

Saturday 14 November: the night we would book

Saturday gives you a full day to prepare and a night with no alarm the next morning for most people. It also tends to be the evening that fills first on weekend trips, so it is the one to secure early. The tour is a small-group chase in a premium Mercedes-Benz vehicle with 2–8 guests per departure, a local guide who reads the weather and decides the direction that evening, and stories about Sámi folklore and the lights on the way.

Eat a proper lunch, go easy on alcohol at dinner (the tour includes its own warm meal), charge your phone and spare battery, and put on thermal layers before pickup. The winter suit goes on over your clothes at the start of the tour.

Sunday 15 November: a second chance, or something gentler

If your flight is Monday, Sunday evening is your second try. If you leave on Sunday, spend the day differently: the Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 leaves at 10:00 for four hours at NOK 1,500 per person (ages 10+ recommended) and the Sommarøy & Kvaløya Scenic Fjord Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 leaves at 10:00 for 5–6 hours at NOK 2,100 per person with a local lunch. Both finish in the afternoon, so check your flight time carefully before booking and leave a generous margin for the airport.

For a second night out, the Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 1,500, four hours, pickup 18:30) is a shorter, calmer evening with snacks and a hot drink. It is not a chase, and we would not pretend it has the same reach as the Northern Lights Tour, but it is a good way to be outside under a dark sky for less money.

Shared tour or private for a weekend trip

Most couples and friends in a weekend slot book the shared tour, and that is a sensible default at NOK 2,300 per person. If you travel as a family of four or more, or you want to pick your own pickup point, look at the Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5. It is NOK 15,000 per group, 5–8 hours, up to 8 guests, with the same inclusions, all ages welcome and the pickup chosen at checkout. For four people the shared tour comes to NOK 9,200 in total, so the private option costs NOK 5,800 more but gives you your own vehicle and a pace set by your group.

For children under seven the shared tour is not recommended by the operator (ages 7+), while the private tour is listed for all ages. See our other family guides through all our Tromsø tour guides if you are planning with kids.

How to book with the Hungrytravelfamily discount

Open the booking link, pick the date, choose the number of guests and continue to checkout. Type HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 into the promo-code field before you pay and confirm that the 5% reduction appears in the total. The code works on tours booked online with Legendary Adventure, not on a booking made through another site. We are Legendary Adventure’s partner and may earn a small commission, which never changes your price.

Cancellation follows the operator’s shared rule: a full refund if you cancel more than 48 hours before the tour, and a 100% charge inside 48 hours. For a weekend trip that means a Saturday tour can be cancelled free until Thursday evening, so it is reasonable to book early and adjust if the weather outlook changes.

What to pack for a November weekend

The winter suit is provided on the northern lights tours, but warm base layers are still your job. Wool or synthetic thermals, a mid-layer fleece, thick socks, a hat that covers your ears, a neck gaiter and gloves with liners are the baseline. Good winter boots matter more than anything else because you stand still for long periods. Bring a spare phone battery in an inner pocket, since cold drains it quickly. If you wear contact lenses, bring glasses too: cold wind and dry air are uncomfortable.

FAQ

Can I book the Northern Lights Tour on the same day?

You can try: availability is live on the booking page and changes daily. We would not rely on it for a specific weekend, so book your preferred night early and keep a second evening open.

How long does the tour last?

It lasts 5–8 hours depending on where the guides find clear sky. Plan for a late return and avoid an early flight the next morning.

Is the 5% discount applied automatically?

No. Enter HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 in the promo-code field at FareHarbor checkout and check that the total changes before you pay.

Is the tour suitable for children?

The shared tour is recommended for ages 7+. The private northern lights tour is listed for all ages.

Where does the tour start?

Outside Clarion Hotel The Edge in Tromsø. Look for a black Mercedes. The pickup time is 18:30 from 25 October.

What if the weather is bad on my chosen night?

Cancel more than 48 hours before for a full refund. Inside 48 hours the operator charges 100%, so a second evening in your plan is the best protection.
