The short list from the operator

On the operator’s page, the Northern Lights Tour lists four inclusions: a local expert guide, transportation in a premium Mercedes-Benz vehicle, a winter suit, and a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks. The Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 lists the same four. That is the whole list, so we will not promise anything beyond it, such as photo prints, extra clothing or drinks beyond what is described.

Four lines do not tell you much on their own, so the rest of this guide explains what each line means in practice, based on how Arctic evenings work. We have not yet taken this tour ourselves, so everything about the experience is framed as what to expect, not what we remember.

The guide: the real value

A northern lights tour is a route plan wrapped in a social evening. The guide reads forecasts, decides whether to go inland or along the coast, picks stops, and tells you when to step out. The operator describes a route prepared from the latest weather and the guides’ knowledge of the area. That planning is what you are mostly paying for, and it is why a chase beats standing in town and hoping.

The guide also carries the evening’s tone. Good ones explain what is happening, keep expectations honest and make the waiting pleasant. Ask questions early in the evening and you will learn the most.

The vehicle: a small premium Mercedes

The operator highlights premium Mercedes-Benz vehicles and a small-group approach, with 2–8 guests (larger groups on request). Small vehicles matter on a chase for two reasons. First, they are more flexible when the guide wants to change direction. Second, getting out takes minutes rather than a slow crowd shuffle, and a quick exit on a good night is worth a lot.

The tour lasts 5–8 hours, a range that reflects how far the chase goes. Plan to be tired the next day and keep the morning light.

The winter suit

The winter suit is the inclusion that surprises first-timers most. Tromsø is milder than many expect because of the Gulf Stream, but a chase can head inland where it is colder, and you stand still for long periods at night. Standing still is what gets you cold, not walking.

Even with a suit, wear warm base layers, wool socks and a hat. Think of the suit as the outer shell, and dress as you would for a winter day outdoors underneath. We cover that in our Tromsø activities hub along with other winter packing advice.

The warm meal, snacks and hot drinks

The operator lists a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks. The exact menu is not specified on the page, so we cannot tell you what you will eat. For dietary needs, contact Legendary Adventure before the tour and ask. We would do the same for any food-related requirement.

What we can say is how helpful this is on the night. A hot drink at a cold stop makes the waiting easier, and a meal on a 5–8 hour tour means you do not need a heavy dinner at 17:30 before pickup. Eat lightly, stay hydrated and keep the evening comfortable.

What is not included

The operator does not list photography help, souvenir photos, travel insurance or hotel transfers beyond the pickup point. Pickup is outside Clarion Hotel The Edge for the small-group tour, at 19:00 (18:30 from 25 October). For the private tour you choose your pickup location at checkout. Personal items such as a spare phone battery and a camera are yours to bring.

If you want a specific extra, such as tripod help, ask the operator before you book, rather than assume.

A packing checklist to pair with the inclusions

Because the suit and meal are covered, your packing list can be short and smart. Wear a thermal base layer, a mid layer of wool or fleece, warm socks, a hat that covers your ears, and gloves you can still operate a phone in. Bring a small bag for your phone, spare battery and any camera gear. Leave bulky items at the hotel, since a suit over a big coat is uncomfortable in a vehicle.

Charge everything before pickup. Cold drains batteries quickly, and a power bank in an inside pocket helps. Keep your phone warm until you need it and your photos will be better for it. If you wear glasses, expect them to fog when you step inside, and give them a minute.

How the inclusions change the shared and private choice

Because the inclusions are identical, the difference between the two tours is people and flexibility, not equipment. The small-group tour at NOK 2 300 per person puts you with other guests, 2–8 in total, on a fixed 19:00 departure (18:30 from 25 October). The private tour at NOK 15 000 per group gives you your own vehicle and guide, a pickup location chosen at checkout, and a pace that suits your party.

For two adults, the shared tour is usually the better value. For a family of four with children under 7, or a group of six to eight friends, the private tour starts to make sense, and children of all ages are welcome on it. Look at the numbers for your own party and decide from there.

Questions to ask the operator before you pay

If anything about the inclusions matters to you, ask before you book. Useful questions are: can the meal be adapted to a diet or allergy, what size are the suits available, can you bring your own camera tripod, and what is the plan if the forecast is poor on your date. The operator knows the answers for your date, and the tour page lists contact details.

It is also worth checking the cancellation terms on the booking page. The rule we know of is a full refund when you cancel more than 48 hours before, and a 100% charge inside 48 hours. Read the current terms on the page, since they are the ones that apply at checkout.

What a typical evening feels like hour by hour

The operator gives a 5–8 hour range rather than a fixed schedule, because the chase follows the sky. As a rough picture, expect a pickup outside Clarion Hotel The Edge at 19:00, or 18:30 from 25 October, and a first stretch of driving while the guide reads the latest cloud and aurora information and chooses a direction. Somewhere in the middle comes the meal and hot drinks at a stop, and then a longer window of waiting and watching, with the guide checking the sky and the forecast.

Later in the evening, the group heads back to Tromsø, which is why the finishing time varies. On a night with an early, strong display the group may stay longer at one spot, and on a cloudy night the route may be longer in search of clear sky. Neither is a failure of the tour. It is how a chase works, and it is why the inclusions of food, warmth and a comfortable vehicle matter so much: they make a long night at a cold roadside pleasant rather than endured. Plan nothing early the next morning.

If you are travelling with a partner or friends, agree before pickup on one thing: who will keep the phone in a warm pocket until the sky wakes up. It sounds small, and it saves more good photos than any camera setting.

Value check, and how to book

At NOK 2 300 per person for a guided 5–8 hour evening with transport, a suit and a meal, the inclusions cover most of what you would otherwise have to arrange. Compare that with renting a car, driving on winter roads at night and chasing clouds on your own. For many travellers, the guided tour is both safer and more likely to find clear sky.
