Rain or Snow in Tromsø Today: Does the Northern Lights Chase Still Make Sense?

It is grey, wet or snowing in town and the pickup is this evening. We explain how a chase tour decides where to drive, what weather in the city does and does not tell you, how the 48-hour cancellation rule shapes the choice, and how the shared tour compares with the private one.

This guide is built from our own winters in the Arctic and from the live Legendary Adventure tour pages in Tromsø — prices, pickup times and what is included come straight from the operator, never invented.

Short answer

Short answer: yes, usually it still makes sense to go. Weather in the town of Tromsø is a poor guide to the sky somewhere else, and the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is built as a chase: the guides pick a route from the latest weather forecasts and their knowledge of the area, heading inland or along the coast depending on where the cloud allows. The catch is the cancellation rule. Full refund more than 48 hours before, 100% charge inside 48 hours, so by the time you are looking out of the window at the rain, the decision is mostly made. The chase costs NOK 2,300 per person, runs 5–8 hours and leaves at 19:00 (18:30 from 25 October). No operator can promise the lights, and neither can we.

If you decide to go, book online and type HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 in the promo-code field for 5% off. The discount works on Legendary Adventure’s own booking page.

Rain in town is not the forecast that matters

You open the curtains, there is wet snow sliding down the window and the harbour has vanished into grey. It is a sensible moment to wonder whether tonight’s northern lights outing is a waste of an evening and NOK 2,300. From our Arctic winters in Rovaniemi: a low ceiling over one town tells you little about the sky an hour’s drive away.

That is the whole logic behind the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5. It is not a fixed viewing spot with a bonfire. According to the operator, the guides follow a route prepared from the latest weather forecasts and their local knowledge, and the group may head inland or along the coast. You are paying for the choosing as much as for the vehicle.

What we will not say is that rain in town means a good night, or a bad one. The aurora needs two things at once, activity high up and a gap in the cloud below it, and nobody controls either. What you can control is how many attempts you give yourself, and how you handle the money side if the evening feels doubtful. The rest of this page is about exactly that, written for someone who is already in Tromsø and looking at the weather right now.

What a chase tour does differently from a fixed spot

Tromsø sits on an island in a fjord system where weather changes fast. A tour that stands in one place all evening is betting on that place. A chase tour bets on the guides’ judgement instead, and that is why it suits a day like today. The facts the operator gives us:

  • Pickup: outside Clarion Hotel The Edge, look for a black Mercedes. Time 19:00, or 18:30 from 25 October.
  • Duration: 5–8 hours, which tells you the evening is built to flex. Some nights the best sky is close, others it takes longer to reach.
  • Group: 2–8 guests (larger groups on request), travelling in a premium Mercedes-Benz vehicle.
  • Included: local expert guide, winter suit, a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks.
  • Ages: 7+ recommended on the shared tour.

The description also mentions stories about Sámi folklore and the traditions tied to the northern lights. On a night when the sky is slow, that matters: the hours in the vehicle and at stops are part of the product, not dead time.

Plan for a late return and do not book anything early the next morning.

How we would decide this afternoon

If you are already booked, the choice is really about how you spend the next few hours. If you have not booked and are weighing it up on the spot, the same list helps. We would work through it in this order.

  1. Is this your only night? If it is, go. A chance with poor odds is still more than no chance, and the chase format is designed for imperfect weather.
  2. Do you have other nights? Then the weather outside is a small piece of information, not a verdict. Spreading the risk over two evenings beats waiting for a perfect one.
  3. Look beyond the window. Check the regional weather forecast and a cloud-cover map for the wider area, not the town. Look for any clear area within reach of the road network, and remember the guides are looking at the same maps with far more experience.
  4. Be straight about your own mood. If a long night in a vehicle with a tired child would spoil the evening for everyone, that matters more than the cloud.
  5. Message the operator if you are unsure. They are the people who decide where the vehicle goes. Ask what they are seeing, but remember they cannot promise the lights either.

One thing we would not do is cancel in a huff at 16:00 because the street looks miserable. That decision falls inside the 48-hour window, which is the subject of the next section.

The 48-hour rule, and why it matters more than the weather

The operator’s rule for the shared tour is clear: full refund if you cancel more than 48 hours before the start, and 100% charge inside 48 hours. In practice that has an uncomfortable consequence for exactly your situation. Today’s rain is a fact you can see only today, and today is already inside the window for tonight’s departure. So the weather you are looking at cannot reopen free cancellation.

We think that is the most useful way to plan, even though it feels strict:

  • Book early in your stay. If you arrive for five nights, put the chase on night one or two. That leaves room for a second attempt if the first night disappoints.
  • Do not let one grey afternoon decide. A cancellation on the day gets you nothing back, while going still gives you a chance.

For the private tour, read the terms on the booking page before you pay, as the rule we quote here is the one given for the shared tours.

What to do between now and pickup

If you are going, a small amount of preparation makes the evening better. The winter suit is included, so you are not wearing your entire suitcase, but the layers under it are yours.

  • Eat lightly before. A warm meal, snacks and hot drinks are part of the package, so you do not need a big dinner first.
  • Rest if you can. The tour lasts up to 8 hours. A nap or a quiet hour at the hotel is worth more than a last souvenir run.
  • Base layers, wool socks, a hat and thin gloves under any mitts. Phone and camera work needs some dexterity.
  • Be outside the hotel a few minutes early, since the vehicle is collecting a group and will not wait long.

For daylight, wet weather is a good excuse for a long lunch or a museum. Just do not burn yourself out before pickup.

Shared chase or private van: when the numbers change

The Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is the same idea with the group to yourselves: NOK 15,000 per group (private), all ages, pickup at 19:00 from a location you select at checkout, 5–8 hours, with the same inclusions (guide, premium Mercedes-Benz vehicle, winter suit, warm meal, snacks and hot drinks). Group size is 2–8 guests, larger on request. The table shows what the two cost in total and per person at different group sizes.

GuestsShared total (NOK 2,300 pp)Private totalPrivate per person
2NOK 4,600NOK 15,000NOK 7,500
4NOK 9,200NOK 15,000NOK 3,750
6NOK 13,800NOK 15,000NOK 2,500
7NOK 16,100NOK 15,000NOK 2,143 (rounded)
8NOK 18,400NOK 15,000NOK 1,875

So on price alone the private vehicle starts to win at seven guests. At six, private costs NOK 1,200 more in total. Below that it is a premium you pay for control. It is also the option with no minimum age listed (all ages), so it suits families with very small children. For a couple, the shared tour is the sensible choice.

If you decide tonight is not for the chase

Sometimes the answer really is no: you are exhausted, a child is unwell, or you are inside the 48-hour window and simply cannot face a long night. Then it is a loss you can live with, and the question becomes how to keep an aurora chance without a 5–8 hour commitment on a later evening.

The Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is a shorter option: NOK 1,500 per person, 4 hours, ages 10+ recommended, pickup 18:30 outside Clarion Hotel The Edge. It includes a guide, minivan transport, snowshoe rental, snacks and a hot drink. According to the description, you walk trails in the dark with a chance of seeing the northern lights. It is a chance, not a chase across a long route, so it suits people who want less time in a vehicle and are happy with fewer degrees of freedom.

We would not pick it over the chase if the sky is your priority and you can manage the length.

What we would book from here

Putting it together, as friends who send people to Tromsø but have not taken these particular tours ourselves, here is how we would choose.

  • One night, any weather: the shared Northern Lights Tour. It is the cheapest way to get the full chase.
  • Seven or eight in a group, or small children: the private tour, because the arithmetic and the age rules both point there.
  • Short on stamina: the Aurora Snowshoe Hike, with the caveats above.

If you are still deciding what else belongs in your trip, our guide to all Tromsø activities puts the daytime options next to the evening ones. And one transparency note: we are Legendary Adventure’s partner and may earn a commission on bookings; it never changes your price.

FAQ

Does the Northern Lights Tour run if it is raining or snowing in Tromsø?

The operator describes a chase where the guides choose a route from the latest weather forecasts and their knowledge of the area, heading inland or along the coast. Weather in town does not decide the route. Check the booking page and message the operator if you are worried about a specific night.

Can I cancel because of bad weather on the day?

The rule for the shared tours is a full refund when you cancel more than 48 hours before the start, and a 100% charge inside 48 hours. For the private tour, check the terms on the booking page.

Is the northern lights tour guaranteed to show the lights?

No. Nobody can promise the aurora. The chase gives the group a better chance of finding clear sky, but the sky decides.

What time is pickup and where?

The shared tour leaves at 19:00 (18:30 from 25 October) from outside Clarion Hotel The Edge, where you look for a black Mercedes. The private tour picks up at 19:00 from a location you choose at checkout.

How much does it cost, and what is included?

The shared tour is NOK 2,300 per person for ages 7+. The private tour is NOK 15,000 per group (up to 8 guests), all ages. Both include a local expert guide, a premium Mercedes-Benz vehicle, a winter suit, a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks.

Is there a reader discount?

Yes: book online and type HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 in the promo-code field for 5% off. It works when booking on Legendary Adventure’s own booking page.

Our Honest Final Word

A wet evening in Tromsø feels like a reason to stay in. We would still go, for one practical reason: the chase format exists precisely because the sky and the town are different places. If it is your only night, go. If you have several, book the chase early so a second try is possible. And remember that the 48-hour rule means the weather you see today will not buy you a refund, so make the decision when you book, not at the window.
