Northern Lights Forecast in Tromsø: What to Check at 4 pm Before Your Tour Picks You Up
You land, drop your bags and open three aurora apps that all say something different. Here is the short list of what actually matters on the afternoon of your tour, what you can safely ignore, and why the guide’s route beats any app.

Every winter we watch friends arrive in Arctic Norway and spend the afternoon refreshing aurora apps. It is understandable, but most of that scrolling changes nothing about the evening. This is the calm version: what to look at, when, and what to do with the answer.
At about 16:00 on the day of your tour, check only two things: the cloud forecast for Tromsø and the surrounding area, and whether the sky is expected to stay dark and clear for several hours after dinner. The solar-activity number (Kp) is a bonus, not a go/no-go signal. Then let the guides of the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 do the real work: they pick the route that evening, driving wherever the sky is clearest. It costs NOK 2,300 per person, pickup is 18:30 from 25 October (19:00 earlier in the season), and you enter HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 in the promo-code field for 5% off.

Why the Afternoon Check Matters Less Than You Think
An aurora forecast app answers one question: how much energy is arriving from the sun? That is only half of what you need. The other half is whether you can see the sky, and cloud decides that, not solar wind. A strong forecast under a thick grey lid gives you nothing, while a modest one over a clear valley can give a lovely evening.

This is the main reason small-group chases exist. The operator describes the Northern Lights Tour as a route prepared from the latest weather forecasts and the guides’ knowledge of the area, heading inland or along the coast depending on the night. In other words, the app is a rough guide for you and the starting point for them. Your job at 16:00 is to arrive at pickup prepared, rested and warmly dressed, not to predict the sky yourself.
Check One: Clouds, Not Kp
Open any normal weather app and look at cloud cover for tonight, not only for Tromsø city but for the region. Coastal Troms is often cloudier than the inland valleys behind the mountains, and the difference can be dramatic within an hour’s drive. If the forecast shows full cloud over the city, that does not mean the tour is pointless. It means the guide will probably drive further, and you should treat the night as a chase rather than a short hop.
If the forecast shows clear gaps, great, but remember that forecasts for the Arctic coast move quickly. Gaps can close and open again. Think of the forecast as odds, not a promise, and keep your expectations flexible.
Check Two: How Late the Clear Window Lasts
The aurora does not run on the clock. It can show at 19:30, or at 23:00, or in a burst after midnight. That is why the chase is long: the tour lists 5 to 8 hours rather than a fixed three. When you look at the hourly forecast, ignore the single best hour and look at the shape of the evening. Does the cloud clear after nine? Does it thicken after midnight? A window of several clear hours is better than one perfect hour.
You cannot change the weather, but you can change how you spend the hours. Eat something proper before pickup, charge your phone fully and keep a spare layer in your day bag, because standing still in the cold for long stretches is where evenings go wrong, not the forecast.
What to Do With the Kp Number
Kp is a scale of geomagnetic activity. Tromsø sits at about 69° north, under the zone where the aurora is most often seen, so even low activity can be enough to see something on a clear night. A higher number raises the chance of a bright, moving display and can push the lights further south, which matters much more in places like Scotland than in Northern Norway.
Our rule: if Kp looks high, you will be happy; if it looks low, do not cancel your plans. A clear night with low activity still beats a cloudy night with high activity every time. We wrote a longer explanation in our guide to why cloud matters more than the Kp index, and the same logic applies here.

A guide reads several weather models, watches the live cloud picture and knows the roads. They also know which pull-offs are safe for a group, where the wind is worse and where there is a sheltered spot out of the cold. The vehicle is a premium Mercedes-Benz and the group is capped at 2–8 guests, so the route can change on short notice without coordinating a coach full of people.

Included in the price are the guide, transport, a winter suit, a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks. That is why we suggest leaving the route-picking to the people who do it every night, and spending your own energy on being comfortable.
Moonlight, Snow and Other Things People Worry About
Three worries come up again and again. First, the moon: a bright moon washes out faint aurora but barely dims a strong display, and it lights the snow beautifully, which is good for photos of you and the landscape. Second, snowfall: light snow at the pickup point can mean clear sky an hour away, which is exactly the situation a mobile chase is designed for. Third, wind: it is usually worse on exposed coast than in a sheltered inland valley, and a guide will choose accordingly.
None of these are reasons to rebook on the afternoon itself. If you are worried, message the operator through the booking confirmation rather than guessing, and remember that your best protection is flexibility: arrive early in your trip so you have a spare evening, and avoid flying out the morning after your only tour.
A Simple 4 pm Routine
- 16:00: look at regional cloud cover and the evening trend. Five minutes, no more.
- 16:15: pack the day bag: spare gloves, a hat, a charged phone and power bank, and a little water.
- 17:00: eat a proper meal. The tour includes a warm meal, but you do not want to start hungry.
- 18:15: be outside Clarion Hotel The Edge, looking for the black Mercedes, a few minutes before the 18:30 pickup.
If your plans change on the day, remember the cancellation rule on all of these tours: full refund more than 48 hours before departure, and the full amount charged inside 48 hours. That is a reason to think about your best night when you book, not at 16:00.
If the Forecast Looks Awful: Plan B Options
Sometimes the forecast really is poor. Do not panic-book three things, but know the options. If you are still flexible, look at a second night. If you are travelling in a group and want certainty about vehicle and timing, the Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 15,000 for the whole group of up to 8 people with pickup where you choose at checkout. For a calmer, shorter evening on foot, the Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 leaves at 18:30 and lasts 4 hours at NOK 1,500 per person.
None of these can promise lights, and neither can we. What they do is put you outside, under a dark sky, with someone who knows where to stand.

FAQ
Which aurora forecast app should I use in Tromsø?
Any reputable weather app for cloud cover plus one solar-activity app is enough. What matters is cloud, so do not rely on the activity number alone.
What time is the northern lights tour pickup?
The Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 picks up outside Clarion Hotel The Edge. The operator lists 19:00, and 18:30 from 25 October, so check your confirmation.
Is it worth booking if the forecast is cloudy?
The point of a chase is to drive to clearer sky, so a cloudy city is not an automatic no. No tour can guarantee the lights.
How much does the tour cost and how do I get the discount?
NOK 2,300 per person for the shared tour. Enter HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 in the promo-code field when booking online for 5% off.
Can I cancel if the forecast changes?
Full refund more than 48 hours before departure; inside 48 hours the full amount is charged.
What if I am only in Tromsø for one night?
Book that night and rely on the guide’s route. A second night raises your odds if you can fit it in.
Our Honest Final Word
The best aurora forecast is the one you stop checking at 16:15. Look at clouds, eat well, dress warmly and let a local guide decide where to go. If you want a shared chase at a fair price, the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is the one we would send friends to, and HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 saves you 5% when you book online.
