Short answer

Yes, you can combine the Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (10:00, 4 hours, NOK 1,500) with the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (18:30 from 25 October, 5–8 hours, NOK 2,300) on the same day, but it is a long one. Plan a proper lunch and a rest between them, and think twice about doing it on your first or last day. For most travellers a better pattern is a snowshoe morning on one day and the chase on the next evening. Use our reader code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 for 5% off on Legendary Adventure’s own booking page.

Why This Is the Classic Day

Winter in Tromsø has two natural settings: the snow in daylight and the sky at night. The snowshoe hike gives you the first, the northern lights chase the second. Together they cover the main reasons people come north between October and March.

We recommend this pairing to friends because the two tours feel so different. One is slow, physical and quiet; the other is waiting, driving and watching. They complement each other.

What Each Tour Is

The Arctic Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is a 4-hour tour with transfer included, with a local expert guide, transport in a Mercedes minivan, and snowshoes and poles. It costs NOK 1,500 per person, leaves at 10:00 and is recommended for ages 10+.

The Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 lasts 5–8 hours, costs NOK 2,300 per person and includes a winter suit, a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks. The listing recommends ages 7+. Pick-up is 19:00, or 18:30 from 25 October. Both groups are 2–8 guests.

A Sample Timetable

Here is a realistic outline of the day, using the listed times. Check your own confirmations, since the times can change.

TimePlan
Just before 10:00Be outside Clarion Hotel The Edge
10:00Arctic Snowshoe Hike departs (4 hours, including transfer)
14:00Back in Tromsø; lunch
15:00–17:00Rest, warm shower, charge devices
Just before 18:30Be at the pick-up point for the chase
18:30Chase departs (5–8 hours)

The gap between 14:00 and 18:15 is not a luxury. It is where you eat, warm up and sleep if you need to. If you skip it, the late chase becomes a struggle.

Is It Too Much for One Day?

It depends on you. A fit couple who are used to cold days outdoors will manage; a family with young children, or travellers recovering from a long flight, will probably prefer to spread things out. The chase can end after midnight, so the next morning matters.

We would not do this on your arrival day or your departure day. Put it in the middle of the trip, when you are adapted to the cold and the schedule.

The Alternative: Aurora Snowshoe Hike

If you want to combine snow and sky in one tour, the Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 leaves at 18:30, lasts 4 hours and costs NOK 1,500 per person. It includes snowshoe rental, snacks and a hot drink. The listing recommends ages 10+.

It is a gentler evening than the full chase, and you stay local. It does not replace the chase in terms of flexibility, but it is a good option for a short stay.

Splitting Over Two Days

Our preferred pattern is: snowshoe hike on day two, rest in the afternoon, a free evening, then the chase on day three. That way, you are not exhausted for the chase, and if the sky is cloudy on one night you have another chance.

If your trip is short, put the chase first and the snowshoe second. The aurora is weather-dependent, but the hike is more reliable.

Lunch and the Long Break in Between

Between the two tours you have a real window of about four hours, and the best use of it is simple. Eat a proper lunch with warm food, drink water, and change into dry clothes. If you slept badly on the plane or the previous night, lie down for an hour; do not scroll on your phone, because the cold evening drains you faster when you start already tired.

The chase includes a warm meal, but that comes late in the evening, so a good lunch matters. Keep a snack in your pocket for the hike, since the walking uses more energy than it feels like.

How Tired Will You Be?

The snowshoe hike is a gentle workout, not a race. It is walking in snow with a guide setting the pace, and most people with normal fitness finish pleasantly tired. The chase is a different kind of tiring, with hours in the vehicle and then standing in the cold, and it can finish after midnight.

The risk is not any one tour but stacking both after a short night. If you slept six hours or more the night before, you will probably be fine. If not, split them.

Sleep, Alarms and the Next Morning

If the chase returns after midnight, do not book another early tour the next morning. A fjord tour at 10:00 is possible but will feel slow; a late breakfast and a quiet day is kinder. You may also want to build a fully free morning into the trip after the main chase.

The aurora is also unpredictable. If the sky is poor, the operator may end the evening earlier, giving you a normal night. Plan for both and stay flexible.

If the Forecast Changes

The two tours depend on different things. The snowshoe hike depends on snow, safety and visibility, while the chase depends on cloud and activity. A good forecast for the hike is not a good forecast for the chase, so check them separately.

If cloud is forecast for the whole region on your planned evening, move the chase to another night while you still can, remembering the 48-hour rule. If the morning looks dangerous for walking, call the operator through the booking page and ask about options.

Is It Good Value as a Pair?

For two people the pair costs NOK 7,600 in total before the 5% discount. That is a lot of money, but it buys two experiences that most visitors consider the heart of a Tromsø winter. Compared with spending the same on restaurants and shopping, we think it is well spent.

If you have to cut, keep the chase and drop the snowshoe hike. If you like the outdoors and the chase is already booked, the hike is the best second purchase.

A Small Day Bag for Both Tours

Carry a compact bag with a spare base layer, dry socks, gloves, a hat, a power bank, lip balm and a snack. After the morning hike you can swap damp layers for dry ones before the evening, and your phone battery will last the night. Leave valuables at the hotel.

Bring a small notebook or simply your phone for photos, but plan to put it away for a while. The best parts of the day are not the pictures.

For Families: The Private Versions

The Private Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 costs NOK 12,000 per group, and the Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 costs NOK 15,000 per group; both are for 2–8 guests. Their pick-up locations are chosen at checkout, which is handy when a day is long.

See our Tromsø activities guide for how we mix shared and private tours for different families.

What to Wear for Both

Dress in layers that you can add or remove. For the morning, wear a base layer, a mid-layer, a windproof shell, warm socks and waterproof boots. The snowshoe hike warms you up, so a zip is helpful. For the evening, the winter suit is included, but you will want a fresh dry base layer.

Bring a spare hat, gloves and a power bank. Dry gloves are the difference between a pleasant night and a miserable one.

Our Honest Final Word

The snowshoe and chase combination is a classic for a reason: one gives you the quiet snow and the other gives you the sky. You can do both on one day if you are fit and rested, but you do not have to. In most cases we would spread them over two days and keep a spare evening for cloud.
