Aurora Snowshoe Hike vs Northern Lights Chase in Tromsø: Which One Should You Book?
Legendary Adventure sells two very different northern lights evenings in Tromsø: a four-hour snowshoe hike to open snow near the city for NOK 1,500, and a five-to-eight-hour minibus chase that drives wherever the sky is clear for NOK 2,300. We compare the odds, the effort, the ages, what is included and who each one suits — and explain why, with two nights, we would book both.

This guide is built from our own winters in the Arctic and from the live Legendary Adventure tour pages in Tromsø — prices, pickup times and what is included come straight from the operator, never invented.
With one night and the aurora as the priority, book the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5: NOK 2,300, 5 to 8 hours, a guide who drives up to the Finnish border for clear sky, winter suit and a warm meal included. With two nights, or if you would rather earn the lights on foot in silence than sit in a van, book the Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5: NOK 1,500, 4 hours, snowshoes and a hot drink included, but tied to the local sky near Tromsø. The chase has the higher odds; the hike is the better evening when the sky is clear. Our honest answer is both, on different nights. Families and groups should look at the Private Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 12,000 per group) and the Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (NOK 15,000 per group). Code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 takes 5% off any of them.

The Two Formats in One Minute
Every northern lights operator in Tromsø sells some version of these two evenings, and Legendary Adventure’s are a clean example of each. The chase is a hunt: a small group in a Mercedes minibus, a guide reading the cloud maps, and a route decided on the night that can run inland behind the Lyngen Alps or across the border into Finland or Sweden. You spend most of the evening sitting, and the point is to be under clear sky wherever that happens to be. The hike is a walk: a short transfer out of the city, snowshoes on, and an hour or so of moving through untouched snow to open ground away from the street lights, where you stop, drink something hot, and watch. The point is the place and the quiet — the lights are the hoped-for bonus.
We live in Rovaniemi and have done both kinds of evening many times across Finnish and Norwegian Lapland. They are not the same product at different prices: one optimises for the sky, the other for the experience, and knowing which you want is most of the decision.
The Aurora Snowshoe Hike: What the Evening Looks Like
The Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 picks up at 18:30 outside Clarion Hotel The Edge on the harbour — look for the black Mercedes — and lasts 4 hours, so you are back in town around 22:30. Groups are 2 to 8 guests. The price is NOK 1,500 per person and includes a local expert guide, transport in a Mercedes minivan, snowshoe rental with poles, and snacks with a hot drink.

The operator describes it plainly: the trails that are familiar by day become a completely different place by night, and the snow-covered terrain near Tromsø turns into open ground where, if the sky cooperates, the aurora appears over the mountains. Snowshoeing is easier than it sounds — if you can walk uphill for an hour on a forest path, you can do this — but it is real movement in cold air, which is partly why the operator recommends it for ages 10 and up. You arrive warm from the walk, and the hot drink keeps you that way while you wait.
What you need to understand before booking is the one constraint: the hike stays near Tromsø. There is no minibus roaming the region looking for a gap in the cloud. If the local sky is clear, this is the more beautiful evening of the two by some distance. If the coast is overcast, you get a lovely night walk on snow and no lights, and the tour does not refund for that. In December and January, the cloudiest months on the coast, that matters.
The Northern Lights Chase: What the Evening Looks Like
The Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 picks up at 19:00 (18:30 from 25 October) from the same spot outside Clarion Hotel The Edge, in a premium Mercedes-Benz minibus with 2 to 8 guests. It costs NOK 2,300 per person and lasts 5 to 8 hours — the range is the whole point. The guide has spent the afternoon on satellite cloud data and the local models, and the route is chosen that evening: a clear coast might mean a stop forty minutes away, a cloudy one might mean the dry inland air near the Finnish border and a return at 02:00.

Included are a local expert guide, the transport, a full winter suit, and a warm meal with snacks and hot drinks out in the field. Once the sky opens you stop, the campfire and the food come out, and the guide helps with camera settings while sharing Sámi folklore and the science of the lights. Recommended for ages 7 and up, and sitting in a warm van for long stretches is exactly why younger children manage it.
If the guides judge there is no chance at all — cloud across every region they can reach — they cancel before departure and refund or rebook you. If the tour runs and the lights stay away, there is no refund, which is standard across Tromsø. In practice the willingness to cross borders is what keeps a total blank rare.
Odds of Seeing the Lights: Chase vs Hike, Honestly
On any given night the chase has the higher probability of putting you under the aurora, and it is not close. Tromsø’s weather is coastal: cloud rolls in off the Atlantic and sits over the city while the inland valleys and the Finnish border stay clear and dry. A minibus that can drive 150 kilometres to a gap in the cloud turns a poor local night into a good one. A hike within a short transfer of town cannot.
That said, the hike is not a gamble with bad odds; it is a gamble on the local sky. On a clear night in Tromsø — and February and March bring plenty — the hike puts you somewhere darker and quieter than any roadside stop, with the lights over mountains instead of over a lay-by. Nobody we have sent on a snowshoe aurora evening under a clear sky came back wishing they had sat in a van.
Our rule of thumb: with one attempt, buy the odds and book the chase. With two or more nights, book the chase first and the hike after, and let the forecast decide which becomes the memory. Geomagnetic activity matters less than people think at 69° north — a quiet Kp 1 or 2 night can still fill the sky overhead — so the real variable is cloud, and the real question is whether you want a vehicle that can outrun it.

The hike asks for a basic level of fitness: an hour or more on snowshoes, some of it uphill, in cold air, carrying nothing heavier than your camera. Snowshoes and poles are included and the pace is set by the guide and the group. The recommended minimum age is 10. It suits active couples, teenagers, solo travellers who want to be outside rather than in a vehicle, and photographers who value a dark, open foreground. It does not suit anyone with knee or hip trouble on uneven ground, or very young children.
The chase asks for stamina of a different kind: patience, and the ability to sit in a warm van for a couple of hours each way. The recommended minimum age is 7. It suits first-timers who want the best odds, families with younger children, anyone who is tired from a day of travelling, and anyone who wants the warm meal and the campfire stop rather than the exertion. It does not suit people who hate long drives or who want to be in bed by 23:00.
For children under 7, or a group that wants to set its own pace, the private versions are the answer: the Private Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 12,000 per group for up to 8 guests (still ages 10 and up), and the Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is NOK 15,000 per group for up to 8 guests with no minimum age, pickup at 19:00 from a location you choose at checkout.

Clothing. The chase includes a full winter suit; the hike does not list one, so dress for standing still in the cold after you have warmed up walking — merino base layer, wool mid layer, windproof shell, insulated waterproof boots, mittens and a hat. Both tours leave you responsible for your own boots.
Photography. The chase wins for guided camera help and variety of foregrounds — fjord, road, border forest. The hike wins for darkness and a still, snow-covered foreground, but you carry your own tripod on snowshoes and set up with cold fingers. A phone on night mode propped on a pole does a creditable job on either; spare batteries go inside your jacket.
Cancellation. Both shared tours refund in full if you cancel more than 48 hours before departure and charge the full amount inside 48 hours.
Why We Would Book Both — on Different Nights
Together the two cost NOK 3,800 per person before the discount, and they are such different nights that nobody feels they have paid twice for the same thing. The sequence matters. Book the Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 for your first night in town: it gives you the best odds, and if the operator cancels it for total cloud you have a free evening to rebook into. Book the Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 for a later night, when the forecast can tell you whether the local sky is worth the walk.

If you are a family of five or more, or a group of friends, price the private versions against that plan. The Private Aurora Snowshoe Hike5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at NOK 12,000 per group is NOK 1,500 a head with eight people — identical to the shared price — with your own guide and pace. The Private Northern Lights Tour5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at NOK 15,000 per group is NOK 2,500 a head with six, close to the shared NOK 2,300, and it is the only aurora tour open to children under 7. Both let you choose your pickup location at checkout.
One honest comparison with home: in Rovaniemi the inland sky is drier, so a walk-and-wait evening carries less risk. On the Norwegian coast, the vehicle is the insurance policy. That is the whole reason this page exists.

FAQ
Which gives better odds of seeing the northern lights: the snowshoe hike or the chase?
The chase. Legendary Adventure’s Northern Lights Tour drives up to 8 hours wherever the sky is clear, including into Finland or Sweden, while the Aurora Snowshoe Hike stays near Tromsø and depends on the local sky. One night: book the chase. Two nights: book both.
How much do the Aurora Snowshoe Hike and the Northern Lights Tour cost?
The Aurora Snowshoe Hike is NOK 1,500 per person for 4 hours; the Northern Lights Tour is NOK 2,300 per person for 5 to 8 hours. The private versions are NOK 12,000 and NOK 15,000 per group for up to 8 guests. Code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 takes 5% off all four.
How fit do I need to be for the Aurora Snowshoe Hike?
Moderately fit: expect an hour or more on snowshoes in cold air, some of it uphill, at a pace set by the guide. Snowshoes and poles are included. The operator recommends it for ages 10 and up; the chase is recommended for ages 7 and up and involves no hiking.
What time do the two tours start and finish?
The Aurora Snowshoe Hike picks up at 18:30 outside Clarion Hotel The Edge and lasts 4 hours. The Northern Lights Tour picks up at 19:00 (18:30 from 25 October) from the same place and lasts 5 to 8 hours, so a long chase can return around 02:00.
Is a winter suit included?
On the Northern Lights Tour, yes — a full winter suit plus a warm meal, snacks and hot drinks. The Aurora Snowshoe Hike includes snowshoes, poles, snacks and a hot drink but does not list a suit, so dress in proper winter layers with insulated waterproof boots.
What if the weather is bad or I need to cancel?
If the operator cancels a northern lights tour in advance because there is no chance of aurora, you are refunded or rebooked. If you cancel, both shared tours refund in full more than 48 hours before departure and charge the full amount inside 48 hours.
Our Honest Final Word
Choose the chase if you are buying odds, and the hike if you are buying an evening. On the Tromsø coast, where cloud is the only thing that really stands between you and the aurora, the minibus that can outrun it is worth the extra NOK 800 for anyone with a single night. But the best northern lights memories we have made were not from a roadside — they were on snow, in silence, a long way from any light, and that is what the hike sells for NOK 1,500. With two nights, do not choose. Do both.
