Proposal Photography in Lapland: Why Nearly Every Proposal We Plan Includes a Photographer
You only propose once, and in the Arctic dark, cold and snow you cannot retake the moment. We plan proposals in Rovaniemi for a living, and eight of our ten signature proposals include a professional photographer. Here is how the photography works, what you get, how the cold and the light change the plan, and how to hide a photographer from a very observant partner.

If you want photographs of your Lapland proposal, choose an option that already includes a photographer, because the cold, the low light and the surprise make it a poor moment to hand your phone to a stranger. Eight of our ten signature Proposals in Lapland include a professional photographer who captures the question and then takes couple photos right after the yes. The most photography is in the Surprise Proposal Photoshoot (from €1,050): two hours, at least 80 edited images, 10–20 sneak peeks within 24 hours and short videos. Yes Under the Aurora and The Path to Yes (both from €1,500) hide the photographer as your “guide”. Two options, Right Where You Are and A Thousand Petals, list a photographer as an add-on.

Why We Treat the Photographer as Part of the Proposal
When couples write to us, the first questions are about the setting and the price. The photographer comes up later, usually as an afterthought, and we gently move it to the front. A proposal in Lapland is short, often a few minutes out of a long evening, it happens in the dark or in low blue light, and there is a ring, a bouquet and a lot of emotion to hold. Nobody is thinking about the camera, and nobody should have to.
We are Joona and Alla, and Rovaniemi Weddings is our own company. We say that openly because our view is not neutral: we include a photographer in nearly everything we plan, and we have come to that view by standing in the cold and watching what works. The moment you ask is the one thing you cannot recreate, and the photographer is the only person whose job it is to catch it.
There is also a quieter reason. Couples who have a photographer present tend to relax, because someone else is responsible for the pictures. You can look at your partner rather than at your phone, and afterwards you can truly remember it instead of watching it back on a shaky video. A proposal photographer in Lapland also knows things a visiting friend would not: where the light will fall at five in the afternoon in December, which side of the lake is sheltered from the wind, and how long a bare hand can hold a ring before it turns white.
Which of Our Proposals Include a Photographer
Eight of ten include one, and the other two can add one. This is the overview.

| Proposal | From | Photography |
|---|---|---|
| Surprise Proposal Photoshoot | €1,050 | Two hours of photography, 10–20 edited sneak peeks within 24 hours, 2–3 short videos for social media and at least 80 edited images in a personal web gallery three weeks later |
| The Fireside Proposal | €1,400 | Photographer captures the moment, then couple photos right after the yes |
| On the Frozen Lake | €1,400 | Photographer captures the moment, then couple photos right after the yes |
| Dinner in the Glass Dome | €1,450 | Photographer captures the moment, then couple photos right after the yes |
| The Path to Yes | €1,500 | Photographer in the role of your guide |
| Yes Under the Aurora | €1,500 | A private guide who is also a professional photographer |
| A Promise in the Ice Chapel | €1,800 | Photographer captures the moment, then couple photos right after the yes |
| The Grand Romance | €2,700 | Photographer captures the moment, then couple photos right after the yes |
| Right Where You Are | €650 | Add-on |
| A Thousand Petals | €700 | Add-on |
The two add-on options are cheapest because they do not include the photographer. If your budget is tight, we would still add one before spending anything on a bigger bouquet.
How the Photographer Stays Hidden
The most common worry is not the camera but the surprise. A photographer standing around waiting for a proposal is exactly what a suspicious partner notices. We have three ways of solving that, depending on the option.
The guide. In Yes Under the Aurora the person who drives you into the dark and prepares the flowers while you watch the sky is also the photographer. They are doing a plausible job and they are already in position. In The Path to Yes the photographer walks the trail with you as your guide in Riisitunturi National Park or the Korouma canyon, and it is the trail that leads to the spot where the moment is waiting.
The couple shoot. The Surprise Proposal Photoshoot starts as what it looks like: a photography session in Rovaniemi. You walk through a beautiful place such as Ounasvaara hill or Vaattunkiköngäs with its bridge and river, and the proposal setting is already waiting. Your partner thinks they are posing for pictures.
The dark and the distance. At the Ice Chapel, the glass dome and the frozen lake, we place the photographer out of sight before you arrive, and they take the pictures from a distance that does not disturb you. Our team sets up while you are on your way and steps out of view.

What the Cold and the Light Do to Photography
Lapland is wonderful to photograph and not easy. The sun is low or absent in midwinter, the best light lasts minutes, and equipment, fingers and batteries do not like −20 °C. A photographer who works here all winter plans for that: cold-rated gear, spare batteries, short bursts of shooting between warm-ups and a clear idea of where the light will be.

For you this matters in three ways. First, timing: we plan the proposal for the light, so blue hour on the lake, a candle-lit evening, or the hour the aurora is at its brightest. Second, brevity: outdoor winter sessions run in short stretches, ten to fifteen minutes at a time, so we keep the photography efficient and the warm-up close. Third, clothes: photographs show what you wear, and a good coat, a thin pair of gloves and a hat you like will make you look happy and warm.
Our guide to proposing at −20 °C has the cold-weather details, and the month-by-month guide shows what light you can expect when you travel.
After the Yes: Couple Photos, Sneak Peeks and Videos
The photograph of the question is only half of it. In every option that includes a photographer, the photographer also takes couple photos right after the yes, while you are still glowing and before anyone is cold. These tend to be the pictures people put on the wall, because they are the first relaxed photographs of you as an engaged couple.
The Surprise Proposal Photoshoot goes further. You receive 10–20 edited sneak-peek images within 24 hours, which is helpful if you want to tell family while you are still on the trip. There are two to three short videos for social media, and at least 80 edited images arrive in a personal web gallery three weeks after the shoot. If you want a second location, the shoot can continue to the Möötikkärakka viewpoint or a private reindeer farm; the farm charges separately.
A videographer is available as an add-on to every option. We think of it as a want rather than a need, since the photographer already captures the moment, but if you would like to hear the words and the laughter, say so in your first message so it goes into the single quote.
Photo or Film: Choosing What to Add
Our advice, as we would give it to a friend:

- Start with the photographer. If an option does not include one, add one before any décor upgrade.
- Choose the setting for the light you love. Candles and blue hour on the ice, warm fire and winter forest at the laavu, glass and pines at the dome, or the sky above you on an aurora night.
- Ask for the videographer if sound matters. People often treasure the audio of their partner’s reaction as much as the picture.
- Plan for the weather. Cloud may hide the lights; we have a weather plan for every date and a sheltered alternative where needed. Read how we plan for it in our cloud plan.
- Tell the photographer nothing and us everything. The more we know about your partner’s character, the better we can place the camera.
How to Plan It With Us
It starts with the story: how you met, what your partner loves and how you want the moment to feel. From that we suggest the right option or shape a custom one, send a clear quote within a business day and hold the date while you decide. In the days before, we confirm the flowers, candles, photographer, transport and weather plan. On the day, we set up while you are on your way and step out of sight.
We write only to you and never contact your partner. Look at the Proposals in Lapland page, read about the surprise photoshoot in more detail, and use the Contact Rovaniemi Weddings page to tell us your dates.
FAQ
Does every proposal include a photographer?
Eight of our ten signature proposals do. Right Where You Are and A Thousand Petals list a photographer as an add-on, and one can be added to any option.
How many photos do we receive?
For the Surprise Proposal Photoshoot, at least 80 edited images in a personal web gallery three weeks after the shoot, plus 10–20 sneak peeks within 24 hours and 2–3 short videos. For the other proposals, the photographer captures the moment and takes couple photos right after the yes.
Will my partner see the photographer?
Not if we can help it. Your guide may be the photographer, or the camera is placed out of sight before you arrive, and we choose the approach that fits your partner. Everything is arranged only with you.
Can we have a video as well?
Yes. A videographer is available as an add-on to every proposal. Mention it in your first message so it is included in the single quote.
What if it is dark or very cold?
We plan the timing for the light, keep the outdoor part short and have a warm place near. Winter photography is done in short bursts with cold-rated equipment and spare batteries.
What does photography add to the price?
Nothing in the eight options that include it. For the others the photographer is an add-on that we quote for your date, so ask for it in your first message.
Our Honest Final Word
If you take one piece of advice from this article, it is that the photographer is the part of the proposal you cannot add afterwards. The flowers can be bigger, the setting can be different, but the moment you ask happens once, and in the Arctic dark it needs somebody who knows how to catch it. That is why nearly everything we plan includes one.
Rovaniemi Weddings is our company, so we are glad if you ask us to plan it; but if you are unsure which option fits your partner, tell us the story and we will say honestly which one we would choose. Start with the Surprise Proposal Photoshoot if you want the most pictures, Yes Under the Aurora if you want the sky, or see all ten proposals.
