Most families who ask us about a private Santa visit are thinking about December. Fair enough: it is the season when the whole of Rovaniemi smells of woodsmoke and gingerbread, and every shop window has a lantern in it. But we have a quiet secret to share with families who are flexible about dates: the weeks after Christmas are, in many ways, the nicest time to do a private Santa experience.

We live in Rovaniemi, and Joona has worked in Lapland tourism long enough to know how different the same activity feels in the peak week and in the calm weeks that follow. The pace is slower, the snow is usually deeper, the daylight is a little longer, and nobody is in a hurry. Here is how the private Reindeer Sleigh Ride and Santa Visit looks for January and February 2027, and how we would plan it.

Why January and February can be better than December

December is wonderful but crowded, and the dates sell out first. In January and February the town is calmer, the queues at popular places shrink and the days begin to lengthen. For a private experience, where the whole point is time and attention, that calm matters.

It is also easier on the family budget in other ways. Flights and hotels are usually cheaper after the Christmas and New Year weeks, which can offset a good part of the cost of a private experience. We cannot quote prices for your dates, so check them yourself, but we have seen the pattern every winter.

One caution: availability for any specific date is shown in the live calendar and nowhere else. Use the button below to see which dates are on sale, and enter HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at checkout for 5% off.

There is another reason we like the quieter weeks. In the middle of December, a private visit is competing with every other family in the world for the same few slots, and the timing can be dictated by availability rather than by what suits your children. In January or February you can ask for the time of day that fits your family, whether that is early afternoon after a morning of sledging or later in the day when the light turns blue. Small children are happier when the schedule follows their own rhythm, and the Santa meeting is more magical when nobody is rushed.

The winter scenery also helps. By January the snow has had weeks to settle, the trees are heavy with it, and the forest near Rovaniemi looks exactly like the illustration in a children's book. For a sleigh ride that lasts about a kilometre, the surroundings matter as much as the reindeer.

What the experience includes

Here is what the private reindeer sleigh ride and Santa visit5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 lists: a 1 km reindeer sleigh ride, a visit to a private kota and an exclusive 30-minute meeting with Santa Claus, a special gift from Santa for each child, warm berry juice and cookies, unlimited photo opportunities with Santa, and a personal Santa's Elf who accompanies your family from pick-up to drop-off.

The total is listed as 2.5 hours, which makes it a manageable afternoon even with small children. The difficulty is easy. Nobody needs experience, and there is nothing to drive or steer.

The elf is, in our view, the clever part. Someone else takes care of the logistics, so the parents are free to watch their children's faces rather than wonder where the next thing is happening.

The price, and how to think about it

Let us be direct: this is a premium product. The listed price is from €1,490, and the booking window shows the live price for your date and group. Read it carefully, including who the price covers, before you pay.

We have written a long guide on the family cost, the real cost per person for a family of five, and a guide on two families sharing the experience. If the sum feels large for one family, sharing between two families can make the per-person price much more comfortable.

With the 5% reader discount, entered as HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at checkout, the saving on a €1,490 booking is about €74.50. It is not life-changing, but it covers a very nice dinner.

Who it suits, and who it does not

This experience is best for children who still believe, or are at the edge of believing. The sweet spot is roughly the toddler years up to ten or eleven. For older children, read our post on private Santa visits for kids aged 8 to 12, where we talk about the age at which children half-know the secret and how to keep the magic.

It is also suitable for a single parent travelling with children, which we describe in our single-parent guide.

Note that children under 13 must be accompanied by adults paying the full price, according to the listing. Make sure you read the full terms about who counts as paying when you book.

If you are travelling with grandparents, a private experience has one more advantage: it is easy to include everyone. The pace is gentle, the kota is warm and nobody needs to keep up with a group. We wrote about the three-generation version in our grandparents guide, and the same logic applies in February as in December.

Planning the day around it

Allow the whole afternoon. The experience lasts about 2.5 hours, and pick-up and drop-off are part of it, with the elf alongside. Do not plan a big activity either side. A late lunch beforehand and a calm dinner afterwards is the right rhythm.

If your children nap, try to schedule the experience after the nap, so everyone is rested for the meeting with Santa. A tired toddler who has just been woken up is the usual cause of tears at the moment of truth.

Think about clothing as well. Warm clothing for the sleigh ride is your own responsibility unless the listing says otherwise, so check the booking window and bring a proper winter set. Thin gloves are useful for photographing.

Finally, a note on expectations. Photographs are a big part of the experience, and the listing mentions unlimited photo opportunities with Santa. Decide in advance who will take the pictures, and consider asking the elf to take a family photo with everyone in it. Bring a charged phone, keep it warm inside your jacket until needed, and wipe the lens before you start, because condensation from a warm kota can blur the first pictures. These tiny details are the difference between an album you treasure and one full of foggy lenses.

Weather, cancellation and the booking window

The listing offers free cancellation up to 7 days before the activity, with a 100% fee if the booking is cancelled 7 days or less before the event. That is a strict policy, so only book when you are sure of your dates. The booking cut-off is 12 hours before the start time.

The listing also notes what happens when the weather does not allow a sleigh ride. Read that section of the terms in the booking window before you pay, so you know what the alternative is.

Because a private experience is limited by the number of slots, we would not leave it to the last day. Check dates as soon as your flights are fixed, and keep a note of the cancellation deadline in your calendar.

Cheaper alternatives and add-ons

If the budget does not stretch to €1,490, there are gentler options. The Magical Private Santa Visit5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €249, 1.5 hours) gives you an exclusive 30-minute meeting with Santa without the sleigh ride. The Kuoksa Reindeer Adventure5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €159, 3 hours) is a group reindeer safari of 2 to 3 km through the forest, and a lovely day for families who want the animals more than the Santa.

For a family that would rather add huskies to the trip, the Nulkki Husky Adventure5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €189) is a 4-hour outing with a 5 km self-driven husky ride, child-size winter clothing and pickup within 10 km of the city centre included; check the booking window for age limits.

Our pick for the calm weeks

If you can travel after the Christmas rush, the private reindeer sleigh ride and Santa visit is one of the nicest things you can give a young family. It is expensive, so decide whether sharing, a shorter private visit or a group reindeer day suits you better. If you do book it, book it early and keep the cancellation date in mind.

If you are still undecided, a useful test is to ask yourself what you want to remember in ten years. If the answer is a quiet hour in a private forest kota, with children who are fully present and a Santa who has time for each of them, then the private experience is worth planning for. If the answer is simply "we met Santa", then a shorter private visit or a group experience will do the same job for far less money. Both are honest choices, and neither is wrong. Our job is only to make sure that you know what the price buys, and that you book it with the cancellation terms in front of you. The magic, as every parent in Lapland knows, mostly comes from the children themselves.
