Korouoma Frozen Waterfalls From Rovaniemi: Which Month to Book, December to March
The Korouoma hike depends on the winter ice. A local couple compares December, January, February and March and says who should choose something easier.

Korouoma is the day trip locals recommend to friends who say they have already done huskies, reindeer and the northern lights. A deep canyon in a nature reserve, frozen waterfalls hanging from the rock, and a long walk through quiet forest to reach them. It is also the activity guests most often ask us to date: which month do you book it, and does it matter?
It does, a little, and in ways that are not obvious. This guide walks through December, January, February and March, says plainly what we know and what depends on the weather, and tells you how to book the hike so that you are not disappointed. Our 5% reader discount applies to every tour you book from this page.

What the Korouoma hike actually is
Korouoma Canyon Nature Reserve lies a drive from Rovaniemi, and the tour is a full day: about six hours in total, with a guide, ice grippers for your shoes, local berry juice and light snacks, and winter clothing, overalls and boots, all according to the listing. The price starts from €139 per adult.
It is listed as challenging, and we want to be straightforward about it. You walk, and some of the terrain is uneven and slippery. It is not a technical climb, but it is real exercise in cold weather, and it suits people who are reasonably fit and enjoy walking more than people who want to be carried between experiences.
The reward is the landscape. A frozen waterfall is a very different thing in person from in a photograph: the scale, the blues, the silence. We have written a separate piece, on the Korouoma day trip, with more detail on the day itself. This post is about timing.
The big idea: ice needs cold, and cold needs time
The reason month matters is simple physics, and we are not scientists, so we keep it plain. Waterfalls freeze when it is cold enough for long enough. Early winter can be cold one week and mild the next, and the ice can be thin, patchy or still forming. By the middle of winter, after a long run of freezing days, the formations are usually fuller. We cannot promise any particular condition on any particular date, because that is down to the weather of the year.
That gives a rule of thumb: the deeper into winter, the more likely the ice is at its best, up to the point where the days start to warm in March. It is a probability, not a guarantee. If seeing big ice is the main goal of your trip, aim for the middle of the season and keep a flexible day.
The booking window shows what is running on your date. If you have doubts about conditions, you can contact the operator before you travel, and we always suggest doing that if you are building a whole trip around one hike. Type HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at checkout for 5% off.
December: dark days, early season, a different mood
December in Lapland is about atmosphere. The days are very short, the Christmas lights are everywhere, and the forest has that heavy, blue winter feeling. A Korouoma hike in December is possible, but the short daylight hours matter for a six-hour day, and the ice may be younger than in later months.
We would book it in December only if your trip is in December anyway and you want an adventurous day between the Santa visits. In that case, go with open expectations: the canyon is beautiful in any winter light, and a smaller waterfall is still a waterfall. Our advice is to avoid the busiest Christmas dates, which are full of other things, and pick a quieter weekday.
If your whole holiday is built around the hike, December is not the month to choose. Look at January or February instead.
January and February: the sweet spot
For most travellers these are the months we recommend. By January the cold has usually settled in, the daylight is slowly returning, and the nights are long enough for the aurora. February adds a little more light, which is useful for a long outdoor day and for photographs.
These are also busier months for tours, so booking early helps. The January and February school holiday periods in some European countries mean more families in Rovaniemi, and spots for the walking tours can fill. Check the live calendar early and be flexible with the day of the week.
If you have only one hike in your trip, put it in the middle of your stay and not on the last day. Weather can close a day, and a flexible schedule is the best insurance. We make the same point in our comparison of January and February in Rovaniemi.
March: longer days, softer ice, gentle weather
March is underrated, as we have said in several posts. The days are long, the light is bright and the snow is still deep. For a hike this is wonderfully pleasant, since the cold is less brutal and the sun is warm on your face on a clear day.
The trade-off is the ice. As the weather warms, frozen formations can start to change, and by late March they may not look as they did in the depths of winter. Again, we cannot promise how any particular year behaves, but if the ice is your priority, early March is safer than late March.
If you like walking more than ice, March is a lovely time. The forest is bright, the pace is comfortable, and you can enjoy lunch outdoors without freezing. For a family with older children, it can be the easiest month for a long day. Type HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at checkout for 5% off.
Who should skip it, and what to book instead
The hike is not for everyone, and we would rather tell you that now. If you have knee or back problems, a very young child, or you simply do not enjoy walking, choose something easier. The listing says it is not recommended for children under three, and it is rated challenging for a reason.
A good gentler alternative is the Snowshoeing Tour in the Private Kuoksa Wilderness5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5, from €89 and about 3.5 hours, which gives you forest and quiet without the long day. If you want animals, Ice Fishing With Reindeer5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (from €159, about 3.5 hours) is a cosy combination.
For couples who want something dramatic but private, there is a private version of the waterfall hike, priced much higher at €1,190, and it makes sense only for a special occasion or a small group splitting the cost. Our guide to activities in Rovaniemi shows more of the range.
Planning the day: transport, clothing and food
The tour is a full day, so plan the day before and after. Eat well the night before, avoid an aurora tour that finishes after midnight, and bring a day pack with water, a spare pair of socks and a few snacks. The listing includes local berry juice and light snacks, but a long walk in winter burns energy.
The tour provides winter clothing, overalls, boots and ice grippers. You still need warm base layers, a hat, gloves with liners and sunglasses on bright days. Snow glare can tire eyes on a long outing.
Check the cut-off time before booking. It is three hours before the start. On weekdays and Saturdays at least two guests are needed for the tour to run, and the number is higher on other days, per the operator's conditions, so look at the live calendar and plan a backup day. Type HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 at checkout for 5% off.
