A February Honeymoon in Rovaniemi: Deep Snow, Returning Light and a Week Built for Two
February is one of the best months for a honeymoon in Rovaniemi: deep snow, the first real daylight after the polar night, and northern lights on clear evenings. We plan weddings, honeymoon styling and proposals here through our own company, Rovaniemi Weddings. This is how we would shape the trip for a couple coming straight from the wedding.

February is a wonderful month for a honeymoon in Rovaniemi: the snow is at its deepest, temperatures can be very cold, the blue and pink twilight is returning, and the northern lights are possible on clear nights. Plan five to seven nights, with a glass igloo or aurora cabin for part of the stay, a private northern lights evening, a husky or reindeer day and a lot of sauna. Book glass igloos and aurora tours well ahead for December to February. Through Rovaniemi Weddings, our own company, we can style a romantic dinner or cabin florals and coordinate the move from wedding to honeymoon; see our Honeymoon in Lapland page, Weddings and Proposals in Lapland.

Why February Suits a Honeymoon
In Lapland, winter runs from November to early April, and each month feels different. November and December bring the deepest polar night and candlelit atmosphere. January and February bring the deepest snow, with temperatures that can fall to −30 °C, and the first returning light, a soft blue and pink twilight that is a gift for photographs. March and April bring longer days and bright sunshine on snow.
February sits in the middle: properly wintry, with real daylight returning. For a honeymoon it means you can sleep late, do one outdoor activity in the daytime and spend the evening in a sauna or under the sky. Rovaniemi Weddings is our own company, and we have a soft spot for couples arriving straight from a wedding, who want warmth, quiet and something beautiful on the table.
We should say plainly what February is not. It is not mild, it is not guaranteed to be clear, and the days, while lengthening, are still short compared with March. If you want long daylight and gentler temperatures, March or April may suit you better. If you want the full winter, with frost on every branch, February is hard to beat. Our guide to a December honeymoon in Rovaniemi sets out the other end of the winter for comparison.
Where to Stay: Igloos, Cabins and Villas
The main decision is where you will sleep, because it shapes the whole trip. The choices we hear about most:

- Glass igloos and aurora cabins, where you watch the sky from bed.
- Wilderness cabins with a sauna and a fireplace.
- Arctic resorts with a spa.
- Boutique hotels in Rovaniemi itself, handy for restaurants.
Glass igloos and resort suites typically cost about €300 to €800 per night, and guesthouses €80 to €150, according to the figures we use when helping couples budget. Book glass igloos and aurora tours well ahead for December to February.
A practical point for honeymooners: after a wedding you will be tired. Choose accommodation that makes arrival easy, with a short transfer from the airport and a restaurant or breakfast included, so day one does not require decisions. Rovaniemi Airport is about ten minutes from town, with direct flights from Helsinki all year and seasonal direct flights from London, Paris and other cities. Flights from most European cities usually cost roughly €150 to €500 return per person.
Of the places we know best, Arcticmint Villa is a private lakeside villa, Aurora Hill Resort sits on Rovaniemi’s highest hill, and the Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos offers glass igloos and the Ice Chapel. See all of them on our Wedding & Proposal Venues in Lapland page.
A Seven-Night Shape for the Trip
Five to seven nights is a good length. Here is a pattern, which you should adjust to your energy levels after the wedding.
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive, settle in, sauna, early night |
| 2 | Slow morning, a walk in the snow, private northern lights evening |
| 3 | Rest day. Reading, sauna, a long lunch |
| 4 | Husky safari or reindeer sleigh ride |
| 5 | Spare evening for the aurora, or a styled romantic dinner |
| 6 | Santa Claus Village for fun, or ice floating in a dry suit |
| 7 | Departure |
The spare evenings matter. Northern lights depend on a clear sky, and the best night may not be the first. Our guide to aurora hunting in Rovaniemi during New Year’s week covers the practical choices between bus, small group and private options.
The Northern Lights: Private, Small and Patient
The northern lights are visible in Rovaniemi on roughly 200 nights a year, best between September and March, and February is within the best of that window. Clear skies are the key. We suggest booking at least two aurora evenings, and a private tour if you can, because it lets you stay as long as the sky stays interesting and avoids waiting in a queue in the cold.

Dress for stillness, not for walking. On an aurora evening you stand or sit in one place for a long time, and the cold finds you. Wear a proper winter suit or the warmest coat you have, two pairs of socks, a balaclava or buff, and mittens over gloves. Bring a thermos and a small snack. Ask the guide where the warm hut or fire is, and use it. A comfortable couple sees more lights than a shivering one.
If the sky is cloudy on your first aurora evening, do not despair. Cloud moves, and a spare night is built into the shape above for exactly that reason. Never plan your only night for the lights.
If you want the aurora to be part of the celebration, our Yes Under the Aurora experience, which includes a private guide who is also a professional photographer, is designed for proposals but works as a beautiful anniversary or honeymoon evening on request. Ask us what is possible.

Romance We Can Style for You
Honeymoon styling is part of what Rovaniemi Weddings does: romantic dinners, cabin florals and coordination between the wedding and the honeymoon. Some ideas we like in February:
- A cabin or igloo prepared before you arrive, with candles and flowers.
- A private three-course dinner. Dinner in the Glass Dome at Invisible Forest Lodge, from €1,450, is designed for proposals but is a lovely setting for a honeymoon evening.
- A Valentine’s moment on 14 February, if the trip falls on that day. See our Valentine’s week plan for couples.
- A small anniversary or vow-renewal ceremony, if you married earlier.
Tell us what is special about the two of you and we will shape the details.
What to Do by Day
The classic daytime activities in winter are husky sledding, snowmobiling, reindeer sleigh rides, ice fishing and Santa Claus Village. A reindeer experience with a sleigh ride for two and a short encounter for photos starts from around €400 with us. Ice floating in a dry suit is a surprising honeymoon highlight. Sauna is a must: every night if you can. Many couples find that two active days and two slow days is the right balance.

If you married in Lapland, the transition can be seamless: the same team that styled the ceremony can prepare your first evening as a married couple, with candles, flowers and a table set before you walk in. Tell us when you book, and we will plan the handover so nothing is left to chance on the night after the wedding.
We do not sell activities or quote tour prices, so check them with the operators when you book. We can help with timing and with fitting an activity around a styled evening.
On the question of how much to do, our honest advice is less than you think. A honeymoon in the cold uses more energy than a beach holiday, because every outing starts with ten minutes of dressing and ends with a warm-up. One main activity a day is plenty. Keep one morning completely empty, and let the sauna and the snow outside the window do the work.
What to Wear and Pack
February in Rovaniemi is cold. Pack thermal base layers, wool mid layers, a warm down coat, insulated waterproof boots, hat, scarf and warm gloves. Many hotels rent snowsuits. Bring a swimsuit for the sauna and a pair of thick socks for the cabin. Cameras and phones lose battery in the cold, so keep spares in an inside pocket. Our guide to dressing for long Arctic nights explains layering in detail.
Finland is in the EU and Schengen. Citizens of the US, Canada, the UK and Australia can visit visa-free for up to 90 days. Check the rules for your own passport before you travel.
If you are travelling on Valentine’s Day itself, book restaurants and any styled dinner as early as you can, since 14 February is popular. And if you are still planning the wedding that comes before the honeymoon, our Lapland Wedding Cost and Getting Married in Finland pages will save you time.

Our Honest Final Word
A February honeymoon in Rovaniemi does not need to be busy. The best ones we imagine are slow: a sauna, a husky ride, one clear night under the sky and a dinner that someone else has arranged. Rovaniemi Weddings is our own company and we are happy to arrange the details, but even without us, leave space for rest.
