Hotel Danica Review: Why Petrovac Beat Budva as Our Montenegro Base
Two nights at Hotel Danica convinced us that the smartest way to see coastal Montenegro is to skip the famous towns as bases and sleep in Petrovac instead — three minutes from the beach, with a coastal hike starting practically at the hotel door. Our honest review.
We stayed at Hotel Danica in collaboration with the hotel. As always, all opinions are entirely our own.

Everyone planning a Montenegro trip meets the same question: Budva or Kotor? For two of our four Montenegrin days we quietly answered neither — and slept better for it.
Hotel Danica sits in Petrovac, a small coastal town halfway down Montenegro’s riviera that most itineraries treat as a footnote. It is a three-star hotel, and we will be honest about what that means — but its location, its calm and its day-trip geometry made it the base we would pick again over any of the famous towns. Here is the full, honest review from our two nights.
Hotel Danica is a friendly three-star hotel in the heart of Petrovac, Montenegro — three to five minutes’ walk from the beach, supermarket and café streets, with a pool, private parking (tell them you’re bringing a car), good local-style breakfast included, and rooms up to small-apartment size. Its superpower is location strategy: a calm base from which Sveti Stefan, Budva, Kotor and Podgorica are all easy day trips. We stayed all our southern-coast nights here and would do it again.
Why Petrovac — and not Budva or Kotor
Budva and Kotor are spectacular, and we visited both. But as bases, they come with high-season baggage: crowds, prices and parking wars. Petrovac runs at a different voltage. It is genuinely lovely — a bay with clean water, a castle on the rocks, pine-covered headlands — but it stays calm even in season.
The strategic insight of our whole Montenegro leg was this: you don’t have to stay in the famous towns to see them. From Petrovac, Budva can take less than an hour depending on the season and traffic, Kotor continues naturally beyond it, Sveti Stefan’s postcard view is just up the coast — roughly 10–20 kilometres, check your route — and even Podgorica is close. We stayed all our southern-coast nights in one hotel, unpacked once, and day-tripped everywhere. Zero hotel changes, zero luggage Tetris.
Location: three minutes from everything that matters
Danica sits in the heart of Petrovac but not in the middle of the busiest strip — which turns out to be the perfect calibration. From the door, it is about three to five minutes on foot to the beach, to the supermarket, and to the streets with the cafés and souvenir shops. Everything a beach evening needs is a short stroll; none of its noise follows you home.
The beach itself is genuinely nice: good views, clean water — the Adriatic at its clearest — and enough space to find your spot. Petrovac’s scale means you are never navigating; you are just walking two streets to the sea.
The coastal walk from the hotel door
Our favourite Petrovac feature costs nothing and starts practically at the hotel: a beautiful coastal path that runs along the shoreline with the sea below and views back over Petrovac’s rooftops and its little castle on the rocks. You walk the pine-shaded coastline, the Adriatic doing its impossible-blue thing beside you, and at the end of the path you are rewarded with a beach — swim, turn around, stroll home for dinner.
We did this walk more than once, which for a two-night stay is the highest compliment we can pay a piece of coastline. If you stay at Danica, do it in the golden hour before dinner: castle views, low light on the water, and the town switching on behind you.

Rooms, pool and breakfast: the honest three-star picture
Let’s be precise, because this is where honesty earns its keep. Danica is a three-star hotel, and the rooms reflect that in furniture: ours was comfortable but basic rather than modern. What surprised us was everything else about it — we stayed in one of the bigger rooms, which was closer to a small apartment: a bedroom plus a living room with a mini kitchen, a fridge stocked as a minibar, and a sofa. The bathroom, unlike the furniture, was properly modern. For families or longer stays, that layout is worth a lot more than a designer armchair.
- Breakfast included — genuinely good, with a fresh, local-leaning selection. We started both mornings well.
- Pool — there is a pool, plus a bar at reception and even ice cream on offer; the small pleasures are covered.
- Private parking — just notify the hotel in advance that you are coming by car. After our Montenegrin traffic adventures, guaranteed parking felt like a spa treatment.
- Staff — friendly, good English, and the owners themselves were warm and helpful. The hotel feels looked-after.
Day trips: Sveti Stefan, Budva, Kotor and Podgorica
Sveti Stefan
Montenegro’s most photographed islet is a short drive up the coast — roughly 10 to 20 kilometres depending on your route and viewpoint choice. The classic view costs nothing; access rules to the island itself change, so check before you plan around it.
Budva and Kotor
Budva can be under an hour away depending on season and traffic; Kotor continues beyond it around the famous bay. Doing them as day trips means you enjoy the old towns and hand the crowds back at sunset. One warning from experience: in high season, do not let your navigation app reroute you onto tiny mountain shortcuts — take the main road even if it claims to be slower. We learned this with our rental car’s paint.
Podgorica
The capital is close too — practical for big supermarkets and shopping on your way in or out. We had one of our best meals of the trip there, so it is not just a logistics stop.

Frequently asked questions
Where is Hotel Danica?
In the heart of Petrovac, Montenegro — about three to five minutes’ walk from the beach, the supermarket and the main café streets, but away from the noisiest strip.
Is breakfast included at Hotel Danica?
Yes — a good breakfast with a fresh, local-style selection was included in our stay, and it set the mornings up well.
Does Hotel Danica have parking?
Yes, private parking — just notify the hotel in advance that you are arriving by car.
What are the rooms like?
Honest three-star: furniture is basic rather than modern, but the bathroom is modern and the bigger rooms are small apartments with a bedroom, living room, mini kitchen, fridge and sofa — great for families and longer stays.
What day trips can you do from Petrovac?
Sveti Stefan’s viewpoint (roughly 10–20 km), Budva (often under an hour, season depending), Kotor beyond it, and Podgorica for city needs. Petrovac’s location makes one base cover the whole coast.
Is Petrovac better than Budva for a stay?
For us, yes — Petrovac is calmer, cheaper and walkable, with clean water and a beautiful coastal path, while Budva and Kotor remain easy day trips. If nightlife is your priority, Budva wins.
Our final word from Rovaniemi
The best travel decisions are usually boring on paper: stay in the smaller town, unpack once, walk to dinner. Hotel Danica turned that boring decision into the most relaxed stretch of our Balkan trip — mornings on the coastal path, days in the famous towns, evenings back in a place calm enough to hear the sea.
Montenegro’s coast is short, dazzling and busier every year. Our advice stands: see everything, but sleep in Petrovac. And if you sleep in Petrovac, Danica’s three-minute geography, friendly owners and guaranteed parking make it the easy choice.
