Winter Sun in Lanzarote From Finland: Why We Would Swap −20 °C for 18 °C in January (With 5% Off)
We live in Rovaniemi, where January means darkness at lunchtime and frost on the eyelashes. Lanzarote averages 18 °C that month, sits only two hours behind Finnish time and has almost no rain. Here is how we would plan a winter-sun week from Finland: when to go, which homes to choose, what it costs according to the operator’s booking engine, and the honest downsides.

This guide is built from the live property pages and booking engine of Lanzarote Retreats — sleeping capacities, inclusions, distances and prices come from the operator, never invented. We have not stayed in these homes ourselves; we research them and send readers.
For Finnish families, Lanzarote is the easy winter-sun answer: roughly six hours of flying (check current options from your airport), only a two-hour time difference, the euro, and January temperatures that average 18 °C with 16 mm of rain according to the operator’s weather table. Our pick is Finca de Arrieta in the north-east, where children 17 and under stay free: the Eco Barn5% off · code inside (2 adults + 3 children, quoted €1,172 for 10–17 January 2027) and the Eco Luxury Villa5% off · code inside (4 adults + 2 children, €1,656 for 24–31 January) are the family sweet spots. Book directly with Lanzarote Retreats and use code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 for stays until 18 December 2026 (Christmas and New Year excluded) or HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY275 for stays from January 2027 — 5% off either way.

Why Lanzarote Works From Finland
Winter sun for a Nordic family has to clear a few hurdles that a British or German family might not care about: the journey must not eat the holiday, the weather must be warm enough to feel like an escape, and nothing should need a long-haul adjustment. Lanzarote clears all three. It is the driest of the Canary Islands, about 100 km off the coast of Africa, and the operator’s weather table gives average temperatures of 18 °C in January and February, 19 °C in March and 20 °C in December, with 16, 18, 12 and 29 mm of rain respectively. For comparison, Rovaniemi in January is regularly around −20 °C.
The island is on Western European Time in winter, which is two hours behind Finland, so there is no real jet lag: children who wake at six local time are awake at eight Finnish time, and the adjustment is gone in a day. Daylight is the other quiet benefit. After weeks of a few hours of grey light, Lanzarote’s winter days are long and bright, and for many Nordic families that, more than the temperature, is what the trip is for.
Flight times are roughly six hours from Helsinki, but we do not quote airlines, routes or fares because they change by season, so check the current schedules for your own airport and whether you will connect.
When to Go: Month by Month for a Finnish Winter
Lanzarote is a year-round destination, but November to March is the European winter-sun peak and the one that sells out first. This is the operator’s weather table for the months that matter to us:
| Month | Average °C | Rain (mm) | Our take for Finnish families |
|---|---|---|---|
| November | 22 | 15 | Warmest of the winter and quieter; a good escape from Finnish autumn gloom |
| December | 20 | 29 | Wettest month on the island; Christmas and New Year are peak-priced and excluded from our first code |
| January | 18 | 16 | Our favourite: deepest Finnish winter, calm prices in the middle of the month |
| February | 18 | 18 | Winter-holiday season for many Finnish schools; the most expensive month in our price checks |
| March | 19 | 12 | Lengthening days, slightly warmer, fewer clouds |
Finnish school winter holidays fall in different weeks in February and March depending on the region, so check your local calendar and book as early as you can; the popular weeks are the ones that fill up. Because the second week of January was the cheapest period in the operator’s booking engine in our checks, it is also the one we would aim for if your dates are flexible.
Where to Stay: Our Finca de Arrieta Shortlist
We would base a first winter trip at Finca de Arrieta in Arrieta, north-east Lanzarote. Lanzarote Retreats describes it as an off-grid village of 21 self-catering homes running on solar power with generator back-up, with a shared solar-heated 13 m × 2.5 m pool that is open all year, a play park, donkeys and chickens, and a 300-metre track to the calm golden beach of Playa de la Garita. Children aged 17 and under stay free, which is a real saving for a Finnish family of four or five.

| Home | Sleeps | 7 nights, 10–17 Jan 2027 (2 adults) | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eco Tower | 2 adults + 1 child | €887 | A couple, converted windmill |
| Eco Twin Yurt | 2 adults + 4 children | €1,139 | Families who want to try a yurt |

| Eco Barn | 2 adults + 3 children | €1,172 | Two parents and up to three children |

| Eco Luxury Farmhouse | 6 adults + 3 children | €2,556 | Two families, private pool |
These are quotes from the operator’s booking engine on 23 October 2026 and change with dates and demand; the live calendar on each property page is the real price. The Eco Luxury Villa5% off · code inside is our default for four to six people, the Eco Barn5% off · code inside is the value family home, the Eco Garden Cottage5% off · code inside is the cheapest way to fit four adults, and for two families who want a private pool there is the Eco Luxury Farmhouse5% off · code inside.

We want to be straightforward about the things that surprise Finns, because a Finnish house is warm inside and Lanzarote’s holiday homes mostly are not heated. There is no heating and no air conditioning in most Lanzarote Retreats homes (Arrecife Sands is the only property with A/C), because the operator says the temperature stays between about 18 and 28 °C all year. Evenings in winter can feel cool, especially after a Nordic hot sauna habit has spoiled you, so bring a fleece and warm socks.

Finca de Arrieta is off-grid by design. That means no television, no dishwasher, no electric kettle and no iron in the homes, to save energy; a hairdryer is available on request. There is free wifi. The sea is cooler than most people expect, roughly 18–20 °C, so children will swim in the shared pool more than the Atlantic unless they have wetsuits. The north-east can be windy, and some beaches have a real swell, so choose calm Playa de la Garita for small children.
Finally, sun protection matters even in January. Take a high-factor sunscreen and hats; the winter sun on Lanzarote is stronger than a Finnish skin expects.
Getting Around Without Stress
Finca de Arrieta is about 20 km from Arrecife airport. Lanzarote Retreats offers a private return airport transfer for Finca guests with 48 hours’ notice, and the package includes a complimentary 5-seater car, hybrid where possible, for up to seven days (7-seaters cost extra; drivers must be 25 or older with a licence held for two years). Child car seats are free on request. There is also a bus stop on the main road beside the Finca. We would collect the car, do a big supermarket shop in Arrieta or Haría, and plan the week around one or two day trips: Timanfaya National Park, the César Manrique sites (Jameos del Agua, Cueva de los Verdes, Mirador del Río) and the Haría or Teguise markets.

If you travel with a baby, the operator provides a travel cot, high chair, changing mat, potty, toddler step and baby bath free on request.
What a Winter-Sun Week Costs
Accommodation is the main cost. The Eco Barn was quoted at €1,172 for 7 nights from 10 January 2027, and the same total applied whether we searched two adults or two adults and two children, because under-18s are free at Finca de Arrieta. The Eco Garden Cottage was €893 for 7 nights from 15 November 2026 and €1,163 for 10–17 January. February and March were higher: the Barn was €1,486 for 7–14 February and €1,384 for 7–14 March.
Those are accommodation totals only. Flights, car hire beyond the included days, groceries, restaurants and activities are on top. Linen, towels, cleaning, utilities and wifi are included; the operator charges nothing extra for children at the Finca, but Casa Pino, Finca Panorama and Finca Botanica Tao charge for children aged 3–17, so read the booking summary carefully.
Remember the payment terms: a 30% non-refundable deposit, the balance 30 days before arrival, and cancellations forfeit the deposit or, inside 30 days, the full amount. Travel insurance is a sensible idea, and Finnish travellers should also carry their European Health Insurance Card.
How to Book With the Hungrytravelfamily Codes
Book directly on lanzaroteretreats.com, where we never take your payment. Open the home you like through our link, enter your dates and guests, and click Book now. At checkout there is a discount-code field: for stays until 18 December 2026 enter HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 (Christmas and New Year excluded); for stays from January 2027 enter HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY275. Both give 5% off. For a January week at €1,172 that is about €59, which pays for a good supermarket shop.
If you are tempted by the festive season, remember that Christmas and New Year are excluded from the first code and the second only begins in January, so those dates are full price. Our own advice to anyone with flexible dates is to go in the middle of January instead. See our overview of Lanzarote Retreats stays to compare every home.

The operator’s weather table gives an average of 18 °C and 16 mm of rain for January, 18 °C and 18 mm for February and 19 °C and 12 mm for March. Evenings are cooler, so pack a fleece. The sea is roughly 18–20 °C.
Do children stay free at Finca de Arrieta?

Most Lanzarote Retreats homes have neither because temperatures stay between about 18 and 28 °C all year. Arrecife Sands is the only property with air conditioning. The yurts are double-lined and insulated.

Our Honest Final Word
We have not stayed at any Lanzarote Retreats home, and we are not going to pretend otherwise: we research them and send readers. What we can say after reading the operator’s pages and weather table is that Lanzarote in January makes sense for a Finnish family in a way few other places do: short flight, no jet lag, light, and a price that, outside Christmas, is moderate for a week in a proper home. The risks are the cool evenings and the lack of heating, and a wind that can surprise you.
