January is the month we dream about in Rovaniemi, when the thermometer sits near −20 °C. Here is what Lanzarote’s January really offers — 18 °C, little rain, a cool sea — and which Lanzarote Retreats homes make sense for a family, with real booking-engine quotes.

Short answer

January in Lanzarote averages 18 °C with 16 mm of rain, per the weather table Lanzarote Retreats publishes. That is t-shirt weather at midday, a fleece in the evening, and a sea too cool for long swims — so a heated pool at the house matters. For a family we would look at Finca de Arrieta, where the Eco Barn5% off · code inside was quoted at €1,172 for 10–17 January 2027 and children 17 and under go free. Prices depend on dates and guests, so check the live calendar. Use code HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 for stays until 18 December 2026 (Christmas and New Year excluded) or HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY275 for stays from January 2027 — 5% off either way.

What January Weather in Lanzarote Really Looks Like

We live in Rovaniemi, where January means darkness for most of the day and snow squeaking underfoot. The idea of a week at 18 °C is almost absurd. According to the weather table that Lanzarote Retreats publishes on every property page, January averages 18 °C with 16 mm of rain across the month. February is 18 °C and 18 mm, March 19 °C and 12 mm. The operator quotes December to March at an average of 21 °C, but January is the cooler end of that range.

Lanzarote is the driest of the Canary Islands, about 100 km off the African coast, and January is its European peak season for exactly that reason. The honest caveats are the ones every winter visitor learns quickly. Evenings feel colder than the daytime averages suggest, trade winds can blow on the north coast, and occasionally a calima — Saharan dust and warm air — rolls in. The operator’s packing advice for October to March is a fleece for the evenings and a light waterproof in case of a shower. We would add sun protection, because the January sun is stronger than a Finnish one by a wide margin.

The Sea in January: Swimming, Surf and Heated Pools

The Atlantic around Lanzarote is roughly 18–22 °C in winter, which is bracing. Children will run into the sea at Playa de la Garita in Arrieta, whose calm, shallow water the operator highlights, and then run out again. Real swimming in January is therefore usually in a pool, and that is the first filter we would apply when choosing a home.

The operator’s pool list helps: the pool at Finca de Arrieta and at Villa Palacio is solar-heated; Casa Lili’s shared pool is solar-heated; the Beach House has a solar-heated plunge pool; Villa Las Palmitas and Finca Panorama have electrically heated pools; Casa Pino has a solar cover; and Villa Ocean Bliss has an unheated pool. We would not book Ocean Bliss for a January swim. Even solar heating depends on sunshine, so expect fresh rather than tropical water on a cloudy day.

North-facing beaches also see Atlantic swell in winter. Check the flags and ask the Lanzarote Retreats team on WhatsApp where children can paddle on the day.

Where to Base Yourself in January: Four Honest Options

Lanzarote Retreats has 37 homes, and for January we would sort them into four types.

Finca de Arrieta (north-east). An off-grid eco village of 21 solar-powered homes, a 300 m track from the beach, a shared solar-heated pool, a play park, donkeys and chickens. It is the base we would choose for children, with children 17 and under free. The Eco Barn5% off · code inside and Eco Garden Cottage5% off · code inside are the value picks; the Eco Luxury Villa5% off · code inside has more space.

Costa Teguise (east). A proper resort with Las Cucharas beach, shops, a Friday market and an aquarium. The Ocean View Penthouse5% off · code inside and The Beach House5% off · code inside suit families who do not want a car.

Big villas for groups. Villa Palacio & Yurts5% off · code inside, Casa Pino5% off · code inside and the Boutique Beach Villa5% off · code inside take eight or more adults.

Centre and south. Finca Panorama5% off · code inside at La Asomada and Villa Las Palmitas5% off · code inside near Puerto Calero have electrically heated pools, which helps in January, but a hire car is essential.

January Versus February and March

If your dates are flexible, the same homes cost more as winter progresses. The Eco Garden Cottage5% off · code inside was quoted at €1,163 for 10–17 January, €1,297 for 7–14 February and €1,298 for 7–14 March. The Eco Barn5% off · code inside went from €1,172 in January to €1,486 in February and €1,384 in March. The Eco Tower5% off · code inside ranged from €887 to €1,051 and €989 in the same weeks. January is the lower-priced part of the European peak, and the temperatures are only a degree or so cooler than March.

For weather, March is 19 °C with 12 mm of rain, February 18 °C and 18 mm. January’s 16 mm is not worse. The difference you may feel is the daylight, which grows every week, and the crowds, which grow with it. Remember that winter weeks fill early. If you want a particular home, booking now is the best strategy, because the winter-sun peak is when Lanzarote Retreats’ most popular homes sell first.

A Simple January Week With Children

From the north-east, the operator and island geography suggest an easy rhythm. Mornings at the Finca pool or Playa de la Garita, lunch in Arrieta’s seafront fish restaurants, afternoons for a day out. Nearby you have Haría and its market, the César Manrique sites of Jameos del Agua and the Cueva de los Verdes, the Mirador del Río viewpoint and the volcanic landscape of Timanfaya. Check opening hours and any ticket prices on the official sites, since we have not included them here.

The Monday paella evening at the Finca is subject to availability, and the honesty shop is open 24 hours. Bring layers, a light waterproof, swimwear for the pool, and sun cream. On arrival you get the welcome pack of cava, water, milk, wine, coffee and tea. Plan a rainy-day backup, because even a dry January has the odd grey day.

Getting There and Getting Around

Flights to Lanzarote take roughly six hours from Helsinki and about four from the UK, both approximate. Lanzarote is on the same time as London in winter, two hours behind Finland, so there is no jet lag. Finca de Arrieta is 20 km from Arrecife airport. The operator arranges private transfers with 48 hours’ notice, and the package includes a complimentary 5-seater car for up to 7 days; drivers must be 25 or older with a licence held for two years or more. Child car seats are free on request. A bus stop sits on the main road by the Finca, but for sightseeing we would want a car.

Our Honest Final Word

January in Lanzarote is not a beach-lounging month so much as a month for daylight, mild air and outdoor days. We have not stayed in any of these homes; we read the operator’s pages, check the booking engine and send readers. What the numbers say to us is that a family can get a week at Finca de Arrieta for roughly €1,163–€1,172 in the 10–17 January window, with children free, a heated pool and a beach 300 metres away. That is a fair trade for escaping −20 °C.
