Bikes ‘n Wines runs twelve cycling tours in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, and the first decision is simply how long to spend on the bike. We compared the half-day, full-day and luxury formats on price, estates, lunch and effort, using the live tour pages, so you can pick before the summer dates fill up.

The Whole Menu in One Table

Every figure below comes from the live Bikes ‘n Wines tour pages as we read them in October 2026. All of these tours are guided, include the bike and helmet, bottled water and a light snack, and start at 10:00 (the Stellenbosch half-day tours also run at 13:30). Prices are per person, and none of them includes guide gratuities.

The pattern is simple: more time and more estates cost more, and the luxury days are the only ones where lunch is already paid for.

What a Half Day Gives You

The half-day format is the one we would point most first-timers towards. According to the operator it covers 15 km with two estate visits and tastings at each, and it finishes by about 13:30 on the morning departure, or 16:30 on the afternoon departure that the Stellenbosch cycle tour offers. That leaves the rest of the day free for lunch in town, a swim back at your accommodation, or a second activity.

The Stellenbosch Half Day Winelands Cycle Tour5% off via our link is the cheapest guided option in the whole range at R1,150, and it is rated 3/5 for effort on the operator’s page, so expect some gentle gradients on mountain bikes. If the hills are the worry, the Stellenbosch Half Day Winelands EBike Tour5% off via our link is R1,395 and rated 2/5, because the pedal assistance does the hard part. Over in Franschhoek the Franschhoek Half Day Winelands Cycle Tour5% off via our link is R1,450 and rated 2/5, and the Franschhoek Half Day Winelands EBike Tour5% off via our link is R1,695 and rated 1/5, the easiest ride in the programme.

One practical point on lunch: on every half-day tour it is for your own account, so build that into your budget. The stops are named on the tour pages (Skilpadvlei, Neethlingshof or Vredenheim in Stellenbosch; La Bri, Rickety Bridge or Grande Provence in Franschhoek), but the operator notes that estates can vary on the day.

What the Full-Day Meander Adds

The full-day Meander tours run from 10:00 to 16:00, which is the difference you feel. You visit three estates instead of two, you stop for a proper lunch rather than rushing past one, and the pace between stops is slower because nobody is trying to be back by half past one. Lunch is at your own account at an estate en route, so you choose how much to spend.

The Stellenbosch Vineyard Meander Cycle Tour5% off via our link is R1,450 for 15–20 km on mountain bikes, and the operator rates it 4/5, the hardest effort rating of the cycling tours we looked at. That is worth taking seriously: it suits people who ride a bike regularly, not a once-a-year holiday cyclist. The Franschhoek Winelands Meander Cycle Tour5% off via our link is R1,645 for 20 km, rated 3/5, follows the Franschhoek River and includes a pairing experience at one of the three estates. For many people the Franschhoek version is the kinder full day.

The value comparison is interesting. R1,450 for three estates works out at roughly R480 per estate, against R575 per estate on the Stellenbosch half day, so the full day is the better price per tasting if you have the time and the legs. Remember to budget for lunch on top.

When the Luxury E-Bike Day Is the Right Call

The two luxury tours are the only ones that bundle everything. The Stellenbosch Luxury Winelands EBike Tour5% off via our link is R2,295 per person for four estates, exclusive private vineyard access, gourmet pairings and a cheese and charcuterie platter lunch, riding pedal-assist e-bikes from 10:00 to 16:00. The Franschhoek Luxury Winelands EBike Tour5% off via our link is R2,795 and adds a cellar tour and a platter-style lunch with food pairings across four estates, covering 20 km.

At roughly R575 per estate in Stellenbosch and roughly R700 in Franschhoek the headline price per estate is not lower than the half day, but remember that lunch is included and the pairings are a step up from standard tastings. If you were going to spend R300 to R400 on lunch anyway, the gap narrows. They are also the lowest-effort full days, because the e-bike carries you over the hills.

These are adult tours: the operator sets a 16+ age limit on every Bikes ‘n Wines tour except the two family tours, and e-bike riders must be at least 155 cm tall. If you are travelling with children, jump to the family option below.

Stellenbosch or Franschhoek?

The operator’s own summary is useful here. Stellenbosch is the more varied and slightly more active ride, with ratings from 2/5 to 4/5. Franschhoek is gentler and leans towards village life, food and pairings, with ratings from 1/5 to 3/5. For the same format the Franschhoek tour is a little more expensive: R1,450 against R1,150 for the half-day cycle, and R2,795 against R2,295 for the luxury day.

Travel time matters too. Stellenbosch is roughly 45 minutes to an hour from central Cape Town, and Franschhoek is about another 15 minutes beyond that. Neither tour includes a transfer in every case: several of the half-day tours are self-drive only, while the full-day tours show online-bookable transfers subject to availability. Check the tour page when you book. If you have only one day and want the shorter drive, Stellenbosch is the natural pick.

Matching the Tour to the People You Are With

Couples and friends who cycle only occasionally: the Franschhoek half-day e-bike (rated 1/5) or the Stellenbosch half-day e-bike (2/5). Keen cyclists who want a proper day out: the Stellenbosch Vineyard Meander at 4/5. People who want to relax and eat well: either luxury e-bike day. Anyone watching the budget: the Stellenbosch half-day cycle at R1,150.

Families with children: the half-day format is designed for you, but you want the Stellenbosch Family Tour5% off via our link (R1,150) or the Franschhoek Family Tour5% off via our link (R1,450) rather than the adult half days. Those two take all ages, with child seats, baby buggies and children’s bikes provided according to the size of the child, and non-alcoholic tastings for the kids at the stops.

Non-drinkers: they are welcome on every tour and the operator can arrange non-alcoholic tastings on request. The guides do not drink on tour either.

Timing the Summer Season

November to March is the peak season in the Western Cape: hot, dry, long days and a lively south-easter wind that locals call the Cape Doctor. It is also when departures sell out, particularly the weeks around Christmas and New Year. Bikes ‘n Wines is closed on 25 and 26 December and on 1 and 2 January, and also over the Easter weekend, so plan around those dates.

Practical advice for a summer tour: choose the morning departure so you finish before the afternoon heat, apply sunscreen before you leave, and bring a hat. In the shoulder months of April, May, September and October the weather is milder and the vineyards are often at their prettiest, while winter brings rain fronts and greener scenery. Tours run in light rain.

How to Book With the Hungrytravelfamily Discount

Some terms worth knowing before you click. A departure needs a minimum of two guests, so solo travellers should ask about joining an existing booking or book two seats. According to the operator, cancelling more than 72 hours ahead earns a 90% refund, inside 72 hours 50%, and inside 48 hours no refund, while a weather cancellation by the operator is refunded in full.
