We’ve planned more than a hundred trips from our home in Finnish Lapland — some for clients, some for weekend road trips across Norway, and more recently a lot of them chasing the aurora across Finnish Lapland. After years of winter chasing a year, we want to share what actually works, what breaks, and the exact prompts we use.

This is not a “10 ways AI will change travel” think-piece. It’s the workflow we use ourselves.

Why DIY beats a tour package

We’ve watched hundreds of first-timers arrive in Rovaniemi on pre-packaged tours and we’ve noticed a pattern: they’re paying roughly €200–350 per person per day for experiences they could have arranged themselves for half that. Tour operators do provide convenience — airport transfers, pre-booked activities, no decision fatigue — but they also lock you into a rigid schedule that rarely matches how northern lights actually behave.

The aurora doesn’t perform on cue at 9 pm because your itinerary says so. When you’re on a DIY trip, you can stay out until 2 am chasing a KP-5 storm, sleep late, and reshuffle the next day. With a package tour, that flexibility evaporates.

The other big advantage: direct booking. Every husky farm, reindeer experience, and snowmobile operator in and around Rovaniemi has their own website with direct pricing. We’ve personally called farms we like and negotiated private sessions for smaller groups at prices significantly below what the same experience costs through a Helsinki-based travel agency.

That said, DIY does require more planning upfront, and some things — like certain remote wilderness experiences — genuinely are better handled by a specialist guide. The goal of this post is to help you figure out which parts of your trip you should own, and which (if any) are worth outsourcing.

When to go: picking your window

Lapland winter runs roughly from November through March, but the experience inside that window varies enormously. November is atmospheric — fresh snow, darkness, very few tourists — but some activities aren’t fully running yet and the snow cover can be patchy early in the month. December is peak season: Christmas magic, Santa Claus Village, and queues for everything. January and February are, honestly, our favourite months for a DIY trip.

By mid-January the Christmas crowds have gone home, every operator is running full schedules, the snow is deep and stable, and the northern lights season is at its statistical peak. February adds a few extra minutes of daylight each day, which makes daytime snowshoeing and cross-country skiing genuinely pleasant rather than headlamp-only affairs.

March is underrated. Temperatures are still cold enough for everything to work (dog sledding, ice fishing, snowmobiles), you get several hours of beautiful golden-hour light, and prices often drop compared to peak winter. The downside: the aurora season starts winding down, with true darkness only in the early evening.

For aurora-focused trips, we’d rank the windows: January = February > late November > March > early December (too much tourist chaos, too much light pollution around the village). For families or Christmas-focused trips, obviously December wins. Plan around your priorities, and be honest about them.

Getting there and getting around

Flying into Rovaniemi Airport (RVN) is the easiest option — there are direct flights from Helsinki on Finnair and Norwegian, and increasingly direct charter flights from London, Amsterdam, and other European hubs in winter. The airport is literally 8 km from the city centre. A taxi costs around €20–25, or you can walk to the terminal hotel bus stop for a €5 shuttle.

The overnight train from Helsinki is one of the most underrated ways to arrive. It departs Helsinki around 6 pm and arrives in Rovaniemi at 8–9 am. You wake up to snowy forest and step straight onto the platform — it’s a genuinely great start to a Lapland trip, and children love it. Book through VR (the Finnish national rail operator) at vr.fi. Cabin berths sell out fast for December and January, so book 2–3 months ahead.

For getting around Rovaniemi itself and reaching farms outside the city, a rental car is the single best investment you’ll make. Most major farms — Bearhill Husky, Ranua Wildlife Park, the best snowmobile routes — are 15–40 km outside the city centre and not easily reached by bus. Car rental starts from around €60–80 per day in winter. Critical point: Finnish rental cars in winter come with studded or Nordic winter tyres as standard — don’t accept a vehicle without them. Confirm this at booking.

If you don’t want to drive, the city runs local buses and there are taxi apps (Valopilkku is the local one). Some farms offer their own transfers if you book directly. But honestly: hire the car. It transforms the trip from a series of booked pickups to a genuine self-drive adventure through a snowy landscape you can stop and photograph whenever you want.

Where to sleep (and what to skip)

Rovaniemi has accommodation at every price point, from budget hostels to glass-roofed aurora cabins at €700 a night. For a DIY trip, we’d separate accommodation into two tiers: your base (where you sleep most nights) and one or two special experiences.

For your base, the city centre area around Lordi’s Square gives you walkability to restaurants, the Christmas market, and easy car access to everything. Mid-range hotels like Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna or Scandic Pohjanhovi sit right on the Kemijoki river, offer reliable breakfast buffets, and run around €100–160 per night in January. They’re not glamorous, but they’re comfortable, well-located, and free up your budget for the experiences that actually matter.

The glass igloo or aurora cabin experience is genuinely special — but you don’t need to do it for your entire stay, and you don’t need to book the most expensive version. Several smaller cabin operators on the outskirts of town offer aurora-viewing glass or panoramic roofs at €200–350 per night, which is a fraction of the famous resort prices. We’ve had wonderful aurora nights from more modest cabins that nobody photographs for Instagram.

What to skip: overpriced hotel ‘aurora packages’ that bundle a wake-up call service and a thermos of coffee into the room rate at a massive markup. You can set your own alarm, check the SpaceWeatherLive app, and walk outside for free. Also skip accommodation right inside Santa Claus Village unless Christmas is your main reason for being there — it’s expensive, crowded in December, and eerily quiet in January.

Activities you can book direct

Almost every activity in the Rovaniemi area can be booked directly through the operator’s own website — often at 15–30% less than through a tour aggregator. Here’s what we’d book and where.

Husky sledding: StayLapland is our personal recommendation — small family operation, the dogs are well-cared-for and clearly happy, and they offer everything from 1-hour safaris to full-day deep-forest trips. Book their website directly. Avoid any booking platform that won’t name the specific farm.

Reindeer experiences: Several reindeer farms around Rovaniemi offer direct bookings — StayLapland and a few others list their own programmes with pricing. A 1-hour reindeer sleigh ride with hot berry juice typically runs €70–90 per adult when booked direct. The same experience through a hotel concierge or package often costs €130+.

Snowmobile safaris: For beginners, a guided 2-hour safari on a groomed trail makes sense — companies like Lapland Safaris and StayLapland both allow direct booking via their websites. If you have prior snowmobile experience and an EU driving licence, ask about self-drive options, which are considerably cheaper than guided tours.

Ice fishing: This is the easiest DIY activity of all. Buy a day fishing licence for Lake Ounasjarvi or the Kemijoki (a few euros at the R-kioski or online at eraluvat.fi), rent an ice auger from a sports shop, and set up wherever looks good. Joona grew up ice fishing and genuinely considers this one of the most authentic things a visitor can do in Finnish Lapland — not because it’s glamorous, but because it’s just ordinary Finnish winter life.

Northern lights chasing: No booking required. Download the Aurora app or SpaceWeatherLive, drive 15 km outside the city to escape light pollution, park, and wait. The Vikajärvi area east of Rovaniemi and the road towards Vanttauskoski are our go-to spots — dark, open sky, easy to reach by car.

Building your day-by-day itinerary

For a 5-night DIY Lapland trip, here’s roughly how we’d structure it — based on what we actually recommend to friends who ask.

Day 1 (arrival): Fly or train in, pick up your car, check in. Don’t book anything demanding. Do a gentle orientation drive out of the city to scope out the darkness levels. If the aurora forecast is KP 3 or above, head out after 9 pm.

Day 2: Husky sledding in the morning (book the first slot, usually 9–10 am, when dogs are freshest and most energetic). Afternoon free for exploring the city, the Arktikum museum, or just wandering the riverbank. Evening aurora watch.

Day 3: Reindeer farm visit in the morning — most farms run 1–2 hour sessions. Afternoon: rent a snowmobile or hire a guide for a 2-hour forest safari. These are serious machines and it’s worth going with a guide your first time regardless of your confidence level.

Day 4: Full self-drive day. Drive toward Saariselkä or Sodankylä — about 1.5–2 hours north. The landscapes become wilder, the sky gets darker at night, and you’ll feel like you’ve genuinely left the tourist zone. Ice fish on Lake Sompiojärvi if conditions allow. Return to Rovaniemi in the evening.

Day 5: Santa Claus Village in the morning (genuinely worth a half-day, not a full day), and an evening glass cabin experience if that’s in your budget. If not, your best aurora attempt of the trip: check the forecast hard, drive to your dark spot, and stay out as long as the sky cooperates.

The key principle is: leave space. Over-scheduling a Lapland winter trip is the number one mistake we see. The best moments — an aurora exploding across a silent forest, a husky sprint through fresh powder — need room to breathe, and often happen spontaneously when you’re not rushing to the next booked slot.
