What to Wear and Bring on a Winelands Bike Tour: A Practical Guide for Bikes ‘n Wines in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek
Cycling between wine estates in the Cape sun is easy to enjoy and easy to under-prepare for. This guide covers what the operator provides, what we suggest you bring in summer and winter, and what the rules on helmets, e-bike height and ages mean for your packing, with 5% off when you book through our link.

This guide is built from the live tour pages of Cape Adventure Brands (Bikes ‘n Wines, Cape Town Kayaks and Hiking Tours Cape Town) — prices, start times, ages and inclusions come straight from the operator, never invented.
Bikes ‘n Wines provides the bike and a compulsory helmet, plus bottled water and a light snack, so your packing is mainly about sun, wind and footwear. Our general advice, not an operator rule: wear comfortable closed shoes, light layers, sunscreen and sunglasses in summer, and add a warm layer from June to August. For a family day, the Stellenbosch Family Tour5% off via our link (R1,150 per person, 10:00 to 13:30) includes children’s bikes, seats and buggies. Book through our link and 5% comes off automatically.

What Bikes 'n Wines Already Provides
Before packing anything, it helps to know what the operator covers. On the Stellenbosch Family Tour5% off via our link the live tour page lists a fully guided tour, a mountain bike and helmet for every rider, child seats, a baby buggy or children’s bikes according to the size of the child, bottled water and a light snack, and all wine tastings on the route, with non-alcoholic tastings and pairings for children. The operator’s FAQ says helmets are provided and compulsory on all tours.
The other tours follow the same pattern with different extras. The full-day luxury e-bike tours add an electric pedal-assist bike, a platter-style lunch and four estates. So you do not need to bring a bike, a helmet or a cycling kit; you are packing for comfort, sun and weather.
A note on how we write: we live in Rovaniemi, Finland, and we have not ridden these tours ourselves. The facts here come from the operator’s tour pages and FAQ, and the clothing suggestions are our general advice for cycling in a Cape summer or winter, not rules from Bikes ‘n Wines.
Footwear and Clothes: Our General Advice
You will be pedalling on quiet farm roads and gravel tracks, so the basics are simple.

- Closed, comfortable shoes such as trainers, rather than flip-flops, so your feet stay on the pedals and are protected on gravel
- Shorts, leggings or lightweight trousers that let you move freely and do not catch on the pedals or saddle
- A light, breathable top and, if you like, a thin long-sleeved layer for sun and wind
- Sunglasses and a cap that fits under or beside the helmet (helmets are compulsory, so a hat will not replace it)
- Sunscreen, applied before you start and carried for a top-up
Wine tasting is a relaxed part of the day, but you are riding afterwards, so we would avoid anything restrictive or very formal. The operator says tastings are quality-focused rather than large quantities, and that the guides do not drink on tour.
Summer: November to March
November to March is Cape Town’s summer peak: hot, dry, with long days. Tours start at 10:00, which means the strongest sun arrives while you are still out on the estates. The south-easter wind, known locally as the Cape Doctor, can blow hard on open farm roads, so a light wind-resistant layer is worth having even when it is hot.

For a Cape summer we suggest light colours, sun protection on every exposed bit of skin, and extra water on top of what the operator provides. Allow for the fact that December and January are the busiest months and that Bikes ‘n Wines is closed on 25 and 26 December, 1 and 2 January and the Easter weekend, so check those dates before you plan a tour around them.
If anyone in your group struggles with heat, the Franschhoek Family Tour5% off via our link is the gentler of the two family tours: it is rated 2/5 for difficulty and starts at Basse Provence Country Estate at 10:00, against 3/5 for Stellenbosch.
Winter: June to August
The Winelands are green in winter, the crowds are smaller, and the mornings are cool. Rain fronts come through the Western Cape, and the operator says tours run in light rain. We would pack a waterproof layer, a warm top you can wear under it, and gloves for the morning start if you feel the cold. Wet gravel is slippery, so footwear with some grip is a good idea.
If the weather is unsafe, the operator’s terms apply. For Bikes ‘n Wines, a weather cancellation by the operator is refunded in full, according to their FAQ, but read the terms and conditions yourself because policies can change.

A few operator rules shape who comes and what they need:
- Ages: the Stellenbosch and Franschhoek Family Tours take all ages, with children’s equipment from 12 months. Baby seats and buggies are for children under 6, and children’s mountain bikes for those over 6. All other Bikes ‘n Wines tours are 16+.
- E-bike height: the e-bikes require riders to be at least 155 cm (5 ft 2).
- Helmets: provided and compulsory for everyone.
- Group size: minimum 2 guests for a departure; private tours are available for a supplement.
- Non-drinkers: welcome, with non-alcoholic tastings on request.
Tell the operator your children’s ages and heights when you book so the right bikes, seats or buggies are ready.
What to Put in Your Bag
Here is our compact packing list for a half-day tour, again as general advice:

- Sunscreen, sunglasses and lip balm
- A light waterproof or wind-resistant layer
- A small backpack that sits comfortably while cycling
- A refillable water bottle (the operator gives bottled water, but heat adds up)
- A card or some cash for wine purchases or lunch
- Phone and a charger or power bank for photos
- Wet wipes or a small towel for sticky hands, especially with children
Lunch is for your own account on the half-day tours, and the tour ends at 13:30, so plan to eat at an estate or in town afterwards. The full-day luxury tours include a platter lunch.
Which Tour Fits Which Kind of Day
If you are packing for a family, the Stellenbosch Family Tour5% off via our link or Franschhoek Family Tour5% off via our link are the only ones that take young children. If you want a longer, more relaxed day with a platter lunch and four estates, the Stellenbosch Luxury Winelands EBike Tour5% off via our link runs 10:00 to 16:00 for R2,295 per person, and the Franschhoek Luxury Winelands EBike Tour5% off via our link adds a cellar tour for R2,795. Both are 16+ with the 155 cm e-bike rule.
Full-day tours mean more time in the sun and more wind exposure, so pack more water, sun protection and a layer. For a quick, budget-friendly option, the Stellenbosch Half Day Winelands Cycle Tour5% off via our link costs R1,150 per person and is 16+.
Dressing Children and Teenagers
Children’s comfort decides how the day goes. On the family tours the operator provides child seats, baby buggies or children’s mountain bikes depending on size, and helmets for everyone, so what you bring is clothing and small comforts. Our general advice is long, light trousers or leggings for small children in a baby seat or buggy so their legs are protected from the sun and from brushing against anything, a sun hat they can wear when not helmeted, and sunscreen reapplied during the stop at each estate.
Younger children also feel temperature changes faster than adults. A thin fleece in the bag costs you almost nothing and can save a cold, windy start in winter or on a breezy morning in summer. For children over 6 on their own bikes, comfortable closed shoes matter more than anything else, because shoes that slip off the pedals make for a frustrating ride.
Teenagers are a separate case. The family tours take all ages, but every other Bikes ‘n Wines tour is 16+, and the e-bike tours add the 155 cm height rule, so a 15-year-old who wants the luxury e-bike day cannot join it. If you have teenagers under 16, the family tours are the right fit, and the operator’s FAQ says children’s mountain bikes are available for those over 6.
Snacks and drinks are worth a thought as well: the operator gives bottled water and a light snack, and the non-alcoholic tastings and pairings keep children included at the estates, but a few extra snacks in your bag help with hungry moments before lunch, especially because the tour ends at 13:30.

What shoes should I wear?
Our general advice is comfortable closed shoes such as trainers, with some grip in winter. This is our suggestion rather than an operator rule.

According to the operator, tours run in light rain. If the operator cancels for bad weather, the booking is refunded in full. Always read the terms and conditions.

R1,150 per person for the half-day tour, including the bike, helmet, children’s equipment, water, a light snack and tastings at two estates. Lunch and tips are extra. Book through our link and 5% comes off automatically.

Non-drinkers are welcome. The operator says non-alcoholic tastings are available on request, and children on the family tours get their own non-alcoholic tastings and pairings.
Our Honest Final Word
Packing for a Winelands bike tour is mostly common sense: protect yourself from sun and wind, wear shoes you can pedal in, and add a layer in winter. The operator takes care of the bike, the helmet and the water, which leaves you free to enjoy the ride. We have not ridden these tours ourselves, so treat our clothing advice as general guidance and follow anything the operator tells you after booking.
