What Iglu-Dorf Zermatt actually is

Iglu-Dorf Zermatt is a village of snow igloos that is built from scratch every winter, with the help of large balloons, snow ploughs and a lot of muscle power, in about 3,000 working hours across the group’s villages. It sits just below the Rotenboden mountain station of the Gornergrat railway, at about 2,700 m, with the Matterhorn as the backdrop in the photos Iglu-Dorf publishes. Zermatt is the smallest of the three Swiss villages in our deal: 10 overnight igloos and room for up to 24 overnight guests, against 14 igloos and 46 guests in Davos Klosters.

The overnight igloos are about 4 m across and connected by snow corridors. You do not stay in a hotel room that happens to be cold; you sleep in the snow, in a village that exists for one winter and then melts. That is the whole appeal, and it is also why the night has to be understood before it is booked.

The Zermatt season for 2026/27 runs from 19 December 2026 to 4 April 2027. Our code only covers stays from 4 January, so the weeks around Christmas and New Year are outside the deal.

What is included in a Zermatt igloo night

Iglu-Dorf lists the same inclusions for the Swiss villages, and they are generous for the price:

Couple sharing fondue at outdoor table, Matterhorn and crowd of guests behind – Iglu-Dorf, Switzerland

  • welcome drink and aperitif tray, plus a guided tour of the igloo village
  • an all-you-can-eat Swiss cheese fondue (lactose-free, under 0.1% alcohol), with a pasta-and-tomato-sauce alternative in Zermatt if you ask when booking
  • use of the whirlpool and sauna, with a private time slot per igloo agreed on arrival
  • a night walk or snowshoeing, which is voluntary and easy to manageable
  • the overnight stay with an expedition sleeping bag and a sleeping bag liner
  • morning tea served to your sleeping bag, and breakfast

Not included: visitor’s tax, the train ticket, extra food and drinks, which are billed at the end of the evening (cards are accepted). It is worth knowing that a hot tub with a wood stove beside it and a round wooden barrel sauna are part of the Zermatt scenery, so the evening has a warm centre before you go to bed in the cold.

Getting to the igloo: the Gornergrat train

Night guests in Zermatt are never allowed to walk up alone. You meet at Rotenboden station at 4:30 pm; the train leaves Zermatt at 4:00 pm and takes about 30 minutes. The Gornergrat Bahn valley station is across the road from Zermatt’s main station. Unless you hold a valid ski pass, you buy the “Igloo Ticket (Zermatt–Rotenboden return)”, because cableway and train tickets are not part of the igloo price.

Zermatt is car-free. If you drive, you park in Täsch and take the shuttle train, and Iglu-Dorf asks you to be on a train leaving Täsch by 3:30 pm at the latest. Luggage goes into chargeable lockers at Zermatt station; there are none at Rotenboden, so pack a backpack, not a suitcase. After the last train, nobody can get up to the village, so plan the day with a buffer.

The morning after, breakfast is a buffet at Hotel Riffelhaus until 9:30, about a 15-minute walk downhill from 8:00. Iglu-Dorf publishes a safety briefing after booking; read it.

The honest part: cold, shared toilets and sleep

Inside the igloo it stays between about −2 and +2 °C, whatever the weather does outside. You sleep on a snow bed with thermal mats, thin mattresses and real sheepskins, in an expedition sleeping bag with a cotton liner; fleece blankets are available on request. Many people find that they sleep warmer than they feared, and some still sleep lightly because it is an unusual place. We would not promise a perfect night, and neither does Iglu-Dorf.

The toilets are shared dry toilets in the village centre, where you can also brush your teeth. Iglu-Dorf’s FAQ lists running water and showers for Zermatt, which is not the case in Davos Klosters, but we would still treat this as a night out with a backpack, not a spa stay. Iglu-Dorf recommends one night only, because the igloos have no warm rooms or running water.

There is a heated kota next to the igloos in the evening, so you are not outside the whole time. Bring a headlamp; the walk between igloo and toilet is a small adventure in the dark.

It has a double sleeping bag by default, or two single bags on request at no charge, plus snow and ice art, light and a USB power connector. The Family & Friends Igloo — Zermatt5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 is smaller than in the other villages: up to 4 people, from CHF 627 per night for three people, with each additional guest charged separately. At the moment Iglu-Dorf takes Zermatt Family & Friends requests by phone or e-mail rather than online. Children are welcome from about 6, and the age bands in the checkout are adults 16+, teenagers 10–15 and children up to 9.

If you travel with more than four people, look at Davos Klosters or Gstaad, where the Family & Friends Igloo takes up to six. A solo traveller can book the Romantic Igloo at the price for two.

When to go: the Sunday-to-Thursday rule

Our code works for stays from 4 January to 4 April 2027, on Sunday to Thursday nights only. After 3 January, Iglu-Dorf’s FAQ lists the Zermatt hotel as closed Monday to Wednesday, which means the code nights are in practice Sunday and Thursday nights (Gstaad also Monday) — the live calendar on iglu-dorf.com shows exactly which nights are open. Do not plan around a night the calendar does not show.

The upside of the midweek rule is that Iglu-Dorf says it books out fastest on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and in holiday periods, so a Thursday night is often easier to get. January is the quietest and coldest month on a typical Alpine calendar, March brings longer days; we do not promise snow conditions or clear skies, and stays run in almost any weather except extreme storms, lack of snow or a cableway stop, in which case Iglu-Dorf offers another date, a voucher or a full refund.

Month in the code windowWhat to expect
January 2027Midweek nights, village in full winter mode
February 2027Busier; 14 February is a Sunday
March 2027Longer days; season ends 4 April

A Zermatt itinerary around your igloo night

A simple plan: arrive in Zermatt on Sunday or Thursday morning, leave your bags in a station locker, spend the day on the snow or in the village, take the 4:00 pm train to Rotenboden and enjoy the evening: tour, fondue, sauna or hot tub, snowshoe walk. Wake to tea in your sleeping bag, walk down towards Riffelhaus for breakfast, and take the train back to town. Travelling with a ski pass saves you the Igloo Ticket.

If you are not skiing, the Gornergrat line itself is the excursion. We would not add a second night at the igloo, but a second night in town is a good way to recover.

How to book your igloo night with HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5

There are no special links or tracking cookies in this partnership. The code typed at checkout is the only thing that gives you the 5% and registers the booking as ours, so it is the one step not to skip. We are Iglu-Dorf’s affiliate partner and earn a small commission when you book with our code; it costs you nothing extra.

  1. Pick your village and igloo. Open Romantic Igloo — Zermatt5% off · HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 or the quick-booking page on iglu-dorf.com and choose the village and the igloo type.
  2. Add your guests first (adults 16+, teenagers 10–15, children up to 9). The date calendar only appears after that. Choose a Sunday-to-Thursday night between 4 January and 4 April 2027 — in practice Sunday and Thursday nights (Gstaad also Monday) — the live calendar on iglu-dorf.com shows exactly which nights are open.
  3. Fill in guest details and extras: single sleeping bags instead of a double (free), a dog (CHF 25), a vegetarian or pasta dinner alternative, a surprise cake or a rose in ice.
  4. Find the “Promo-Code” box (“Do you want to redeem a promo code?”), type HUNGRYTRAVELFAMILY5 and press Add. Check that the total drops by 5% before you confirm. The “Voucher” box above it is for gift vouchers, not for our code.
  5. Confirm and pay. You can cancel free of charge up to 60 days before the night; after that Iglu-Dorf charges 10% (59–30 days), 50% (29–7 days) and 100% (under 7 days or no-show), with refunds preferably as vouchers. Discounts are not cumulative.

For the Family & Friends Igloo in Zermatt, which Iglu-Dorf currently takes by enquiry only, write to info@iglu-dorf.com or call +41 41 612 27 28 and put the code in your message.

Who should not book Zermatt

An igloo night is not for everyone, and we would rather say so now. It is not a good fit for children under about 6 (Iglu-Dorf recommends the stay from age 6 and offers no changing tables, highchairs or childcare), for anyone who needs a private bathroom in the night (the toilets are shared and dry; the “Plus” igloo with a private toilet is not part of our code), for people who cannot walk in snow with a backpack, or for light sleepers who dislike sleeping at about 0 °C. Wheelchairs and limited mobility are not supported either. And if you can only travel on a Friday or Saturday, the code does not apply to those nights.

Our Honest Final Word

Zermatt gives you the most famous mountain in Switzerland as a backdrop and the smallest of the three villages. You pay the same published price as in Davos Klosters or Gstaad, so the choice is about scenery and logistics: a train ride from the car-free town, a short night of about 0 °C, and a hot tub before bed. We have not slept there yet; we researched it deeply and chose Iglu-Dorf as a partner because the conditions are published plainly.
