Bocas del Toro 5 Day Itinerary: Five Nights at an Eco Lodge
Five nights is the sweet spot at a remote island lodge: long enough to slow down, short enough to see the best of Isla Bastimentos. Here is a realistic day-by-day plan built around Casa Cayuco’s boat times, what is included, and the excursions you can add on arrival.

We are family travellers from Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland, and we have not stayed at Casa Cayuco yet. This plan is built from the lodge’s own published boat times, inclusions and excursion list, plus our experience of planning trips like this. It is a template, not a promise: the guides plan each day with you on arrival, and weather and sea conditions decide the details.
A good Bocas del Toro 5 day itinerary is five nights in one place: arrive on the afternoon boat, spend three days on the water and trails, keep one slow rest day, and leave on the 12:30 pm boat. At Casa Cayuco4% off · HungryTravelPanama the boat transfer, the Salt Creek village tour, kayaks, paddle boards, snorkel gear and all meals are included, and the guided excursions are added on arrival. Why five nights works in Bocas del Toro
Casa Cayuco asks for a minimum of three nights, and that already tells you something: the journey is part of the trip. You fly from Panama City to Bocas del Toro (about 50 minutes), then take a 30–35 minute speedboat through the mangroves of the Bastimentos National Marine Park to Punta Vieja, on the southeast tip of Isla Bastimentos. Nobody wants to do that for one night.
Five nights gives you a rhythm. Day one is travel, the last day is travel, and that leaves four full days. Two or three of those suit guided outings, and one or two should be empty on purpose. If you are still deciding on length, our guide to how many nights to spend in Bocas del Toro compares three, four, five and seven.

The plan at a glance
Here is the whole stay on one page. Activities marked “included” cost nothing extra; the others are guided excursions priced per person as listed on casacayuco.com in November 2026 (they may change, and a 7% tax applies to excursions).

| Day | Plan | Extra cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fly to Bocas, boat to the lodge, sunset and dinner | None |
| 2 | Kayak, paddle board and snorkel from the beach; optional jungle trail | Trail $25 |
| 3 | Salt Creek village tour (included), then a trail or a wildlife outing | Optional, from $35 |
| 4 | Zapatillas Islands, half day | $80 |
| 5 | Rest day: yoga, massage, hammock, fishing or a short outing | Optional |
| 6 | Breakfast, check-out, 12:30 pm boat | None |
The table shows six days because five nights spans six days, with the first and last mostly given to travel. You do not need to book any of the excursions in advance; the lodge says everything is planned on arrival with the in-house guides.
Day 1: the boat, the beach and a dock dinner
Most guests fly Air Panama from Albrook (PAC) to Bocas (BOC). The lodge recommends Flight 980, which lands in Bocas around 2:00 pm, because it matches the daily boat. The captain meets guests at the airport with a sign at 2:00 pm, and the boat leaves the lodge’s dock in Bocas Town at 3:00 pm. Other arrival times mean a private transfer for a fee, and early pick-ups are not available. Our guide to Air Panama flights and the Casa Cayuco boat has the detail.

Check-in is at 3:00 pm, so you arrive in time for the afternoon snack, a first swim and a look around. Settle in to Mono Panoramic Treetop Cabaña4% off · HungryTravelPanama: the lower level is open-air with up to four twin beds and a bathroom, and the screened upper level has a king bed and a large covered porch overlooking the rainforest.
Dinner is a three-course meal, usually at communal tables or at the big table on the dock. The lodge says stingrays glide past in the evening. Go to bed early; the jungle starts early.
Day 2: water day on your own beach
Use the first full day to do nothing guided. Casa Cayuco says it has direct access to a calm, swimmable beach all year, and sea kayaks, paddle boards, snorkel gear and yoga mats are included. Paddle before breakfast, snorkel in the calm water off the beach, and let the kids or your partner set the pace.

Breakfast is the chef’s choice, with locally grown coffee. The lodge’s cooking is predominantly plant-based, plus fresh fish from local fishermen. Lunch and an afternoon snack follow, brought to wherever you are.
If you want a first taste of the jungle, the Casa Cayuco Sendero is a 2-hour loop from the lodge ($25 per person) with poison dart frogs, sloths, monkeys and birds possible, and a fresh coconut halfway. Ask the guides on arrival whether it suits the weather. For a kayak-focused day, see our kayaking and paddle boarding guide.

Day 3: Salt Creek and the trails
Day three starts with the one guided activity every guest gets: the 2-hour Salt Creek village tour, boat transfer through the mangrove channel included. Salt Creek (Quebrada Sal) is a Ngäbe-Buglé village of about 900 people, and 28 of its residents work at the lodge. It is a respectful visit, not a show: bring some cash for crafts, and consider packing school or medical supplies through the lodge’s Pack for a Purpose programme. A portion of every stay funds village projects, including the Salt Creek Medical Outpost run by the nonprofit Floating Doctors.
We would keep this day light. A village visit in the morning, lunch back at the lodge and an afternoon swim is plenty; stack a trail on top only if the energy is there, especially with children.
From Salt Creek you can add a trail the same day if you want to. The lodge lists three:
- Red Frog Trail, 1 hour, red poison dart frogs ($35)
- Caiman Trail, 2 hours, medicinal plants, caimans and frogs ($35)
- Pelicano Trail, half day, over the hill to Los Pelicanos beach on the east coast, with a swim and a loop back ($45)
For more on the village, read our Salt Creek visit guide.
Day 4: the Zapatillas Islands
Make this your big outing. The Zapatillas Islands (Cayos Zapatilla) are two uninhabited islands in the national marine park, about 10 minutes by boat from the lodge. The half-day excursion includes beaches and guided snorkelling and is listed at $80 per person.

If the sea is rough or the guides suggest another day, swap it with a rest day. This is why we plan five nights and not three: weather gives you room to move things around. The lodge notes that the calmest sea is generally August to October, and the biggest surf swell runs November to April, so ask in the morning.
Back at the lodge, there is time for a swim, an afternoon snack and a quiet sunset. If you have older kids, the Zapatillas snorkelling is a good first reef: guides are with you, and the water inside the marine park is generally calmer than open coast. Prefer a different day out? These half-day options are also on the list: Mangrove Snorkeling ($85, soft corals, sponges, octopus, and dolphins to look out for), the Botanical Chocolate Farm Tour ($70), and Monkey Island with its capuchin rehabilitation foundation (2 hours, $70).
Day 5: a deliberate rest day
The best days at a remote lodge are often the ones without a schedule. Do a yoga session on the jungle deck, book the in-house massage therapist at check-in, read in a hammock, or paddle out again. Birding is also on the lodge’s list, and wildlife often shows up near the cabins.
If you want something small, Sloth Creek is a 1-hour boat ride through mangrove channels looking for sloths ($40). Fishing with the lodge’s guides is another quiet option, and the lodge also lists lionfish spearing (2 hours, with a professional local guide). Ask about both at check-in; we have written separately about lionfish spearing and fishing in Bocas del Toro.
Other full-day or longer outings exist if you would rather fill the day: the Bat Cave Tour ($95, half day), surfing for confident surfers ($75, two-person minimum) and Nidori Beach ($135, full day, three-person minimum). We would still keep one day empty.
Day 6: check-out and the way home
Check-out is at 12:30 pm, and the scheduled boat leaves Casa Cayuco around 12:30 pm for Bocas Town. The recommended return flight is Air Panama Flight 981, which leaves Bocas around 2:30 pm. Tell the lodge your flight in the pre-arrival form so the plan fits.
Pack the night before, settle gratuities (the lodge recommends 12–15% of the stay) and any drinks, and keep a little cash. Taxes are extra: 10% on room charges and 7% on excursions and beverages.
If you have a late flight or want to see Bocas Town first, the lodge can store luggage at the Bocas Town pickup point, and Bibi’s on the Beach and La Buga are the lodge’s suggestions for waiting.
Heading to Panama City afterwards? Casa Cayuco guests get special rates at American Trade Hotel in Casco Viejo if they mention the lodge, which makes a pleasant last night before an international flight.

FAQ
Is five nights enough in Bocas del Toro?
Yes, for one island base. Five nights gives you four full days: two or three for guided outings and one or two for rest, with room to swap days if the weather changes.
What time does the boat to Casa Cayuco leave?
The included scheduled boat leaves the lodge’s dock in Bocas Town at 3:00 pm, after a 2:00 pm airport pickup for the recommended flights. The return leaves Casa Cayuco around 12:30 pm.
Do I need to book excursions before I arrive?
No. According to the lodge, everything is planned on arrival with the in-house guides. The Salt Creek village tour is included; the other excursions cost extra.
How much do the excursions cost?
Prices as listed on casacayuco.com in November 2026, per person, may change. Examples: Zapatillas $80, Mangrove Snorkeling $85, Sloth Creek $40, Casa Cayuco Sendero $25. A 7% tax applies.
Can kids do this itinerary?
Guests must be 5 or older. Kid-friendly meal options are available on request. Some excursions suit older children better than others, so ask the guides.
What if it rains?
The lodge says rain usually falls at night and clears by late morning, and the plan is flexible by design. Pack a light rain jacket, trail or water shoes and reef-safe sunscreen.
Our Honest Final Word
Five nights at Casa Cayuco is a slow, water-and-jungle trip, not a checklist. It is not for under-5s, for travellers who want nightlife (Bocas Town is 30+ minutes by boat), or for anyone who needs air-conditioning outside the villa. If that sounds right, it is why we partnered with the lodge.
